In this documentary Karina Vetrano went out for a jog one evening in her neighbourhood of Howard Beach, New York City. When she didn't return, searches began and later an investigation. This led to Chanel Lewis, a man who confessed but there has always been scrutiny about that.

The guilt this poor father must have wishing he could turn back the clock and go with her. Of course he shouldn’t feel guilty at all but as a parent you always blame yourself. And he had to find her like that?! I don’t know how I would cope.

I hope he has reminded himself often enough that he couldn't possibly have gone running with her that day. It's impossible to walk to the bathroom without significant difficulty and pain when those back attacks happen, and that simple thing takes forever to do. Not that I think it would help him get rid of the guilt all together, but repetitious reminders can help ease the guilt a little bit over time. An absolute nightmare!

@@raizeline they didn't say they removed tooth fragments. When interviewed later, the doctor said it could have been tooth fragments. Nothing was ever tested or confirmed and it's not like he looked closely at the time he treated him because at that time, this guy wasn't connected to the murder at all. The doctor probably hadn't even heard about it at that point. You know what else can pass for fragments of teeth? Gravel. What I'm wondering is how did he beat her so hard that her teeth were broken and her face all busted up but still was able to use his hand enough to strangle her. Because it almost seems like it can't be both. If someone beat her like was des robed, I have serious doubts about their ability to then use that same hand to strangle the woman, which takes both hands and a lot of strength, especially if they're fighting, which she was.

His inaccurate confession can be attributed to low IQ and little regard for victims. Facts: - He was in the area at the time (via cell tower AND eyewitness). - His mother reported he returned home that night "disheveled" with torn clothes. - He went to the hospital the next day with a hand injury, and gave a bogus explanation for how it happened. - He googled the case and what he'd face if caught.
@simionix420
@simionix420 3 місяці тому
- Cell tower data is very very tricky to determine. Since which tower your phone pings is not necessarily the closest one, that depends on a lot of factors. Usually, when this evidence is introduced, a lot of towers have been pinged and there's a clear path you can draw on the map that the suspect traversed, before, during and after the murder. There's no such path in this case, just three pings around the same area before the murders (again, that could've come from much further) and that's it. It's not compelling evidence. - There's no report on his mother saying that other than a wikipedia sentence, and there's NO source linked to that quote. If you have an actual link to a verified source on this, show me. Besides, this is extremely circumstantial evidence, if he said he was mugged, there's no way to determine what the truth is. - This one's a real kicker, so much misinformation about it. First of all people go to the hospital on days that other people get murdered, does that mean every other hospital visitor was suspect? It wasn't actually an "injury", this was said by a doctor who DID NOT meet Lewis and DID NOT examine his hand. The actual doctor that examined him: “Head atraumatic, neck supple. No other injury” besides a “single superficial laceration” to Lewis’ hand". That's it, that's ALL they found, no cuts or fingernail trails on his face which the police suspected since the victim scratched for her life. The bs story about a chipped tooth that was supposedly found in his hand?, this was a wild "hunch" added by the detectives on this case, no factual evidence. The doctor simply said "a foreign object", and made no determination what it was. It could've literally been anything, like a miniscule twig. - He didn't google the case, detectives found cached thumbnails of all kinds of news items, can you believe it, fucking cached thumbnails? Do you know how much information your phone caches if you just visit any website? If I go to a sports section on a news website and a headline with a thumbnail of this case is on there, it's recorded. It doesn't mean I actively searched for it or even read it. Don't take my word for it, take the detectives word on it: “You can't testify that Karina Vetrano's name was searched, correct?” Burke asked Rivera, who took a pregnant pause to review his notes. “That is correct,” Rivera replied. What kind of bullshit evidence is that? I would add, even IF he did search for it, it's a famous case, everybody's talking about it. That's weak fcking evidence. Then we come to the holy grail of DNA, because this supposedly ties everything together. Wow, did they drop some stinkers in that one. You should read the nation dot com article on this case, it will blow your mind on how corrupt the detectives have been in collecting, analyzing and withholding the evidence from cross examination. This is not a wild conspiracy theory, multiple convictions have already been overturned over the years. Here's a sneak peek: "Barry Brown recently resigned from the NYPD after he was caught hiding exonerating evidence in a different murder case..." This whole case stinks. The kid doesn't even look like a murderer, he has this permanent childlike expression on his face, and absolutely NO history of violence. How does that add up? I can almost guarantee, this kid is going to be freed one day, even if he IS guilty. Because with all the corrupt shit they pulled, he'll just be released on the basis of a technicality.

There is no doubt. For all the reasons you just listed. The dissenting arguments are weak. An anonymous letter with no attribution, weak accusations of confession coaching, and minor details wrong in his confession(which can be attributed to his low mental capacity), The evidence against Chanel is damning and overwhelming. He is guilty. The truth is there's an unfortunate trend in modern American culture in which incidents where black criminals are involved, race comes before evidence. Americans feel compelled to defend black criminals, no matter how damning the evidence is, when it's a matter of black vs non-black. It's mostly African American culture that does this, but there's a large section of gullible whites that also buy into this mindset due to white guilt. It's the same reason OJ Simpson was and still is presumed innocent by many despite his overwhelming obvious guilt. It is biased in the extreme to assume his innocence based on his race. Mike is unfortunately one of those white people that means well, but is doing the exact wrong thing. You can find this same trend on all of Mike's videos involving black criminals with non-black victims. AJ Armstrong, David Camm, Jill Halliburton-Su..on and on. He always presents these stories in such a lopsided way where obviously guilty criminals are given the EXTREME benefit of the doubt that they've been falsely accused, no matter how flimsy it is. Often to the point of him leaving out extremely damning details in how he presents the story. You can even read the comments that the majority of his audience comes away from the video believing in their innocence. It's genuinely sad that people have become full blown biased in the opposite direction out of some misguided belief that they're "doing the right thing".

If they were doing things on the up and up, why wouldn't they use the state's lab or at least a licensed one? Why use an out of state, unlicensed lab that uses methods so controversial (aka- they ended up being wrong enough times people started getting pissed)? And no, "tooth fragments" weren't removed from his hand. A doctor, who wasn't aware of the crime at the time he treated Chanel, later said there was a piece of something that could have been a tooth in his hand. Unless it was tested, it could have just as easily been gravel, if he actually was assaulted. Cell tower is bullsh*t- his phone and thousands of others hit on that tower. He lived RIGHT THERE and walked that neighborhood every day. I bet if you check the records, his phone hits on that tower a lot, depending on it's vicinity to his home. I'd also like to know the dates he was googling the stuff- was it before or after they started questioning him or came and asked for his DNA- the DNA that had to be sent to some shady lab to get tested. If he's actually guilty then yes, he definitely needs to be locked up for life. But I've seen a ton of interrogations and his "confession" did not sound like one. If I'm to vote for taking away someone's right to live free, I'd want to be completely sure. When cops and prosecutors hide evidence or use shady practices or outright fabricate crap to try to "prove" their case, they're the ones who screw themselves. Here's what I want to know- after hearing how bad she was actually beaten, how was he then still able to strangle her to death using his hands? I've seen plenty of guys break their hands doing a lot less damage in bar fights and whatnot and strangling someone takes time and a lot of strength, especially since we know she was fighting. When I heard that, I immediately thought there might be 2 people involved and this was before the "2 jacked up white guys" was even mentioned. If you're punching someone so hard you're actually breaking teeth, your hands are going to be cut to hell and swollen to sh*t, likely at least a few broken fingers. You're leaving a lot more than just a little DNA under her fingernails if you beat her, rape her and then strangle her. She'd be covered in drips of blood from that hand. And the swelling and pain would likely keep you from making a hard fist, never mind actually gripping her throat and squeezing for several minutes until she's dead. Their evidence was all kind of on the edge. But the evidence from the actual crime scene does not show the scenario they laid out. Like I said, if she was beaten like that then whoever did it bled somewhere and if they continued to attack her, including rape/sexual assault, then it would definitely be on her. Where's THAT evidence?

As a forensic interviewer, this line of questioning isn’t good and was poor interviewing. Not saying he is guilty or not guilty, but I am being critical of the interviewers. So many leading questions, no open ended questions & tons of framing questions. They are basically telling him the story for him through with their questioning instead of letting him tell his story. I can see why the jury was hung the first trial.

@@randomnobody8770 I'm still skeptical. They claimed she bit hit hand or at least the tooth was in his hand and sexual assault was commited. Did they find her saliva in his wound or his DNA on her? I think it warrants a closer examination. The guy frequented the park often so the pinging is suspect but it isn't conclusive in my eyes. There needs to be no room for unreasonable doubt in this case and that wasn't established.

I remember hearing about this lovely young woman’s murder shortly after it happened. My heart breaks for both her parents. Her mother’s speech is so filled with righteous rage and grief. It brings tears to my eyes to hear her pain. And the unwarranted guilt her father must have felt cannot be measured. I can only imagine his thoughts each night as he tried to get to sleep, thinking “If. If. If…”Only I’d gone with her on that particular day.” The one day he can’t go with her, and this atrocity happens. As for the trial and controversy…I, for one, am tired of hearing about all of the loopholes, and smoke and mirrors used by defense attorneys in an effort to get the guilty set free. This perp needs to be kept locked up for the safety of any community he might be loose in. Let him dream about all the girls he wants to stab, as he said; in prison.

I'm 100% certain Channel was the killer but DNA isn't perfect. There can be flaws in how it is collected , handled and tested. Case in point was a case in Germany where a fraudster was sought and after testing DNA collected with a standard Police issued kit, the profile was of a middle-aged E European female. This did NOT match any of the other evidence including witness testimony that was centred on a MALE. Turned out that the 'E European female' was a worker at the testing kit manufacturer who wasn't following correct factory procedure and had left her own DNA on HUNDREDS of testing kits.... this disrupted dozens of investigations as potentially ALL DNA collected using those kits was tainted...
