AA landing in Tegucigalpa, prior to May 2009 984 ft extension increasing the length of the runway from 6112 ft to its current 7096 ft., combined with further blasting of hill on approach which somewhat decreases the risks and approach angle.

Bless your dad, I've been an aviation geek all my life.. could I go back in time I would have studied to be a pilot. I so admire the hand flying skills into this airport and it must have been fun as well as challenging. It must have been even more fun in the 757. Boeing's greatest plane...... RB211's too. Big respect to your top draw dad.🖖

@palomino73
@palomino73 4 роки тому
@@anawaleskaburgosflores7364 NO, in fact the pilot of TACA 390 was a very skilled captain with over 11.000 hours of flying experience, he also has flown this very route often so he had over 50 accumulated landings in Tegucigalpa alone. But he still missed to put his plane's weight into the equation of parameters necessary to safely land at this airport; as the stop-over there would only be the first of a three-leg flight to Miami (Florida), so he was still too heavy for a runway this short in this wet weather conditions of that day.

I have been at that spot many years ago, and it is a bit scary to see a plane flying by so close to you. It was easy to think the landing gear could possibly hit you. In fact, a plane’s landing gear clipped a bus or truck when the road was close by the edge of the runway - the driver was jailed for many years for not heeding the traffic light which turned red when planes approached.. No injuries. Since then, they removed part of the hill to extend the runway, and moved the road. But it still is a dangerous, short runway surrounded by low mountains.

During the 1990's I flew with Lacsa constantly all over Central America and let's say Toncontin was not one of my favourites airports. Coincidentaly in one occasion , in the eve of a morning flight to TGU , History Channel broadcasted a "Most Extreme Airports" episode on Tocontin , showing how dangerous it is. Well I am not a chicken but the landing was a bit too harsh.

This video still amazes me, though I've watched it many times over the years. It's not so scary now. Runway is now longer and the small hill were the people were watching from, is gone. No place to extend at the end where the TACA A320 went over and into the neighborhood. There's another video of a 737 in USAir livery (being ferried after sold) much scary than this one and almost went over the end. At that time, the 757 was the largest plane that could land there. And at the time, the airport code was TNT. That has changed too.

My parents lived in Tegucigalpa from 1954 until their deaths in 1985 and 2000 respectively. The trick about landing there, on that very short runway was that the pilot had to bank between two mountaintops, level out, land and stop the plane before the end of the runway which was on a sawed-off mountaintop.. To add interest to the procedure, Exxon had its storage tanks in the valley at the end of the runway. It was customary after landing there to give the pilot a standing ovation.

Keegan Gidley Thank you! We had, over the years, a lot of experiences flying in Honduras. My parents knew Mr. Yerex, the founder of TACA Airlines. He was a one-eyed soldier of fortune from New Zealand who flew all over the Mountains of Central and South America with that lack of depth perception caused by being blind in one eye. When they flew with him in his personal plane, Mr. Yerex would do the take-off and landing, and let my mother fly the plane once they were aloft...

Lang Lloveras Your explanation is quiet right and good for me, thanks. I am a Japanese and went to Tegucigalpa and San Pedro sula twice (in 1980 and 1991). The reason I went to Honduras was to buy sesame and coffee beans for Japan. At that time maybe the both cities were more safe and calm than now and I had good memory to the country. I just got back from Tegucigalpa (Toncotin) last night. Our landing was close to the same as the video above. It certainly requires a skilled pilot. The talk is that they are going to expand the runway. On takeoff they have to rev the engines to full power before releasing the brake so they can get up enough speed for take off. I've landed there as a pilot of a King Air hundreds of times in the early 1990's. In a small plane it really is not too bad to land in. Losing an engine on take off might be a bit tricky, but that never happened fortunately. The field is safer than this video makes it appear. Thousands of flights take off and land there yearly. Many major airlines go there including American, Continental and Iberia. I am sad for the families of the victims of today's accident.

Landed here in February 2015. This was my 8th trip to Honduras. We had to land in San Pedro Sula the year of the crash, that resulted in the improvements. It is much better since they lengthened and improved the runway.

"don't be afraid" girl, had have you returned to Honduras? Do you were with the Corp? I really enjoy your line, original, human. creative, inspirational, I have seen tons of videos, but your words make this video the number 1, really, I'm from Tegus and know the experience in Toncontin, I think that every human being, need land there at least once in life.

@@maryanngordon8450 Hi. Nice to hear from you¡ wow I am surprised. Yes I also fly in SAHSA few times. The Tegus airport is something else. Had you returned to Honduras? I was in Roatan 2 years ago, beautiful place. The country is going through deep troubles, sad. I hope you have good memories of your trip there. I am thrilled 😊

That approach is the same every time. I made this landing three times (as a passenger) on a C-130 military transport when I was an officer in the Army reserves in the mid 90's. It is so completely different than a typical landing almost anywhere in the world that you can't help but feel the adrenaline kick in no matter how much of a battle harden flyer you are. There have been a number of horrific accidents at this airport over the years.

Beautiful to look at that 757, but I'm sure it is a horrifying experience to land there as a pax, especially if you don't know that this is a "normal" approach there. I'm sure there went some prayers skyward.

I was TDY there in 1985 and often ate at the Rodeo restaurant, near the approach end of the runway. From there you can see the perimeter fence, which was all tore up directly under the flight path! Too many landing gears hit the top of the fence, which was maybe 6 feet above the ground!

Even with the lengthened runway, nothing will prepare you for seeing houses just off the wingtips on both sides when you are still a minute out from landing.....and then the braking!
