Edward Said was the person who guided me as I tried to understand what was happening in the Middle East. This is a beautiful conversation.. Given what is happening in the region at the moment, we could use a man like this to help us understand.. Hamas exists because no one has been listening to the Palestinian experience. No doubt the experience of Jews following World War II has been captivating and on some level inspiring. A "land without people for a people without land" was a compelling fiction and many of us embraced it. The violence eventually prompted us to ponder deeper questions, including what about the people who actually lived their for hundreds of years before the Zionists mobilized their forces? Edward Said helped me when those questions arose for me. I miss him sorely.

There is a online movements to erase Edward Said from the internet. It is already cleared that some of his articles are already disappeared.Try to google Edward Said right now and on the first or second page results. you will see sponsored fake News saying something negative about Said( said supported terrorist....etc) it is insane how the major news outlets support Israeli government. That's why many employees are protesting against their companies' policies by being loyal to a foreign country like Israel. And it is totally acceptable

I am not a middle eastern nor a westerner. I started reading about middle east in 2021. The more I read the more I understand and I become sad. I can now connect the dots between what happened in the middle east post ww2 and what lead to 9/11 and how the western leaders have been funding the 75 year long brutal occupation. Most of its history US have been in war in order to keep the interests of its oligarchs. US supported so many genocides. The Bangladeshi genocide, the Vietnam wars and Iraq war and so on. So much death and destruction. I am glad that the people outside the western sphere are coming to the understanding who are the real terrorists. Hoping for the US empire to go like the British and hoping for a free Palestine from river to the sea.

It's worse now. The Arab leaders have sold out Palestine and the Palestinian people. MBS told the Palestinian people to, ' accept Trump's 'Deal of the Century ' or shut up and stop complaining' to paraphrase him. As MBS joined with the US and Israel in targeting Iran, the last country who are resisting Western and Israeli hegemony. They're not even Sunni or Arab, like the vast majority of Palestinian people. They're Shia and "Persian".

I’m grateful for being able to listen to an interview like this. The occupation of the Palestinian people didn’t simply dispossess them of their land and property. It has also sought to erase the existence of the Palestinians as a people. Former Israeli PM Golda Meir herself once stated, “There were no such thing as Palestinians...They did not exist.” Had this happened hundreds or thousands of years ago, it would not be extraordinary since similar injustices have happened to many other peoples in the past including the Native Americans. But the fact that it happened practically yesterday, and that we as Americans were complicit in these injustices being carried out should provoke outrage in everyone that believes in freedom and the right of a people to self-determination.
@ia1530
@ia1530 2 роки тому
Excellent citation! Can you reference it (sources where you found it)? Isn’t that what the Nazi were saying about the Jews during WWII? All you have to do is to look into Golda Meir’s eyes and you’ll see a very internally tormented prime minister frustrated by the dream of a wet dream. That’s a lot of torments for any prime to handle!

I would point out that the Israel Palestine story spans two world wars, hence two post war 'reorganisation' & reconstruction periods, the Bolshevik revolution & rise of the USSR, the defeat & dismantling of the 400 year old Ottoman empire, the decline & demise of the British empire, & the rise of the new global power, the USA, & the extended Cold War. Not to mention the historical movements of ppl & power shifts of a location between Egypt, Europe, Persia, Babylon, Greece & Arabia, the rise of Islam, & the endless conflict bw the two most powerful religions of the last 1500 years, the Crusades etc. If it any wonder that simplistic modern notions such as self determination haven't prevailed? You do know that nation states are quite new things, that most of those established post wars failed, that millions of ppl were displaced, forcibly relocated etc by the winners ... Do you know how many Germans & Poles had to move after WW2, how many died when Pakistan was created, how many Stalin relocated etc? Compared to those upheavals the tragedy of Palestine, even the deliberate violence of it, was minor. That seems harsh, but it is a fact; huge upheavals elsewhere dwarf the nonetheless tragic reality of the moral hypocrisy that is Zionism. The last 25 years .. yes, your comment is more relevant there.

@@chrisfreebairn870isn’t one of the points of understanding history is so that we as humans stop making the same mistakes over and over? Shouldn’t we look at historical atrocities to avoid them happening again (as opposed to as justification for modern day barbaris? Just a thought…self determination doesn’t have to be some unattainable aspiration just as it isn’t inevitable that we need to support a genocide built on a foundation of lies.

@Arash I did not say Marxism. I said Marx. You should know about the difference. Marxism is a body of ideas and a method of analysis, mainly of capitalism but also of some other aspects of human history and society. Al-Azm use the marxist method to critique Said. So, you should read on Encyclopaedia Britannica or Wikipedia, for example, to know what Marxism is. That’s what a professor also would define. Marxism is not a social economic system. Socialism or communism is. You should also distinguish between the two like any student learning about concepts and definitions. What you you refer to is called Stalinism and Maoism by Marxists. Capitalism has also killed millions of people: Nazi Germany was capitalist, the extermination of the Indians, the slave trade, Genocides today and civil wars today have taken place within capitalist countries, uneven development is killing people everyday.

@@lenwilkinson672 you're clearly talking out of your rear end, and obviously just another yank that's geographically-challenge. Yorkshire has a distinct culture, accent, and identity, much like Cornwall, or even the Black Country. To call it just another "piece of land" so as to diminish its identity is asking for trouble.

I read his 'Orientalism' and found it intellectually depraved - a lot of emotional assertions with zero argument. I dont understand the respect he commands in any way. He says things that appeal to resentments and i suppose his admirers are full of many resentments themselves

*Here are some facts relating to the Arab ownership of land* collated and documented by Simha Flapan, who from 1954 to 1981 was National Secretary of Israel’s MAPAM party. The Israel Absentees’ Property Law of 1950 stated that any Arabs who left their place of residence between Nov ‘47 and Sept ’48, [note, this does not mean they actually crossed any borders], were declared absentees and their property subject to *appropriation* by the [Israeli] Custodian of Absentees Property. A detailed account was prepared by Joseph Schechtman... _“The amount of this property,”_ he wrote in 1952, is _“very considerable”: 2,990,000 dunams (739,750 arces) of formerly Arab owned land, including olive and orange groves, vineyards, citrus orchards, and assorted tree gardens, became totally _*_deserted?*... 2,070,270 dunams were of good quality, 136,530 of medium quality and 751,730 dunams were of poor soil. In addition, 73,000 dwelling rooms in *abandoned?_*_ Arab houses and 7,800 shops, workshops and storerooms became ownerless in towns and villages._ *Bank accounts estimated to total up to 5 million Palestinian pounds and left in Arab and non-Arab banks were frozen by the Israel government. All of this Arab absentee property, movable and immovable, was entrusted to an official “custodian".* Schechtman went on to detail how the property was utilized: _It is difficult to overestimate the tremendous role this abandoned Arab property has played in the settlement of 100’s of 1000’s of Jewish immigrants who have reached Israel since the proclamation of the state in May 1948. 47 new rural settlements established on the sites of abandoned Arab villages absorbed 25,255 new immigrants...over 1 million dunams leased by the custodian of Jewish settlements and individual farmers for the raising of grain crops._ Large tracts of land belonging to Arab absentees have also been leased to Jewish settlers, old and new, for the raising of vegetables. In the south alone, 15,000 dunams of vineyards and fruit trees have been leased to co-operative settlements; a similar area has been rented...This has saved the Jewish Agency and the government millions of dollars. Abandoned Arab dwellings in towns have also not remained empty. By the end of July 1948, 170,000 people, notably new immigrants and ex-soldiers, in addition to about 40,000 former tenants...have been housed in premises under the custodian’s control; and 7,000 shops, workshops, and stores were sublet to new arrivals. The existence of these Arab houses - vacant and ready for occupation - has to a large extent, solved the greatest immediate problem which faced the Israeli authorities in the absorption of immigrants. [details come from Joseph Schechtman’s book, The Arab Refugee Problem (New York, 1952) pp.95-96, 100-101, reprinted in Flapan’s book pp107-8.]

Israel is a democratic country of 8 million people and a toil GDP of about $330 Billion. It has no problem with legitimacy unlike Muslim states like Yemen, Libya, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Sudan, Afghanistan and Somalia that have fallen apart. Fakestine is simply a fake phantom entity that does not even appear on a map.

Christine Q I cannot be bothered to read your wall of text. I would just say that 1 Million of Mizrachi Jews were viciously expelled by Arab States in the 1950 s& 1960s. Lets add up the confiscated properties & bank accounts - and see WHO OWES MONEY TO WHO? Fair is fair.
