They tried to make him being the "good guy" this time around a surprise but anyone who understands plot devicing in movies AND has seen the original would realize that he was the good guy because considering how his predecessor brutally killed those 3 punks in the first movie and the guy pulled a gun on him and ALL he did was disarm him did not even INJURE much less kill him makes it obvious he was not the villain this time. Note that even in the original he did not kill EVERYONE he encountered. He had no compassion at all but he was programmed for a mission and he probably knew that leaving too many dead bodies might draw the police and too much attention to himself. However, considering what his predecessor did to those 3 punks not killing ANY of the people who attacked him in that bar (he hurt them pretty damned badly though) also makes him not being the bad guy this time obvious. Compare that to the T1000 killing that police officer? I saw in a commentary that you are supposed to think he will try to kill John in that corridor and be surprised when he says "get down" but to me it was obvious by then.

I love how this scene subtly shows that he's the hero. He, unlike the previous T-800 from the first one, and the T-1000 earlier, didn't slaughter those bikers. He easily could have, as they were defeated and had threatened him with violence and attempted murder. But he didn't.

I love that brief frame where the T800 scans the fucking cigar smoke at 1:23 as “carcinogen vapor” and makes a threat assessment of it.
@andreewert65762 роки тому
It is a nice attention to detail. The machine has to analyse for threats, and it has to prioritize *closer* potential threats over distant ones, prioritise ones that move towards it over others. That smoke is the first thing that could be an attack. The terminator tries to avoid escalation as long as possible. When the humans don't comply *and* start harming the flesh hull, use of force is the last option.

This scene is so badass. It's also weirdly intimate. All the actors and the extras in the bar are palpably excited. They're in a room with a megastar of the time, shooting what they know will be an iconic movie. They're also killing it with creating an atmosphere of a seedy, skid road type bar, the men being all aggressive, the women being attracted to T800's chiseled body. And when the T800 starts kicking ass, the physicality of being thrown on kitchen burners, his main target, who's superb in the role, freaking out, shaking, throwing his keys at him. Just awesome.
