Nate. I've been listening to you for over six months now and your advice has paid off... literally. I was growing well. The first week of November, I was at 2,250 subs and averaged about 200-500 views per video. I was feeling pretty good. I had 1,600(roughly) watch hours and thought hey, I could get fully monetized by Spring. Well, one video changed everything. I posted on November 11th and it has over 260K views and I gained almost 20k subs just in November. I was monetized in a week LOL. Now, I'm averaging 800-1000 subs per day because of the snowball effect. I'm keeping things simple and not planning too hard or doing unnecessary videos. Thank you. For everything.

My takeaway moment for this one was right at the end: facing fear, and saying no to avoidance. I hit a dark spot with my channel this year, where I honestly wasn’t sure how to keep making content. Glad to have your channel to cheer me on while I get my legs back under me.

Probably the best advice i have seen on any of these how to grow your channel videos is the avoiding the short term actions unless of course you have no intent to make the videos you want, you just want to make videos people would watch. If you do that though you are just signing up for another 9-5 job and will miss out on how amazing youtube can be as a "job"

Hi Nate, thank you so much for all the youtube advice! I've been watching your videos for over a year now and it has helped me so much on my youtube journey-I thought it was time to add my first comment. This video resonated with me since I recently did a huge overhaul of my channel and my content. I had one breakout video that was ranking in search, but bringing in the wrong audience. It was painful removing that video, but I knew it wasn't going to benefit my target audience or my journey overall. For anyone that's starting their youtube channel, I just started with videos that were 'easy' to make. I've learned so much over the last year, but most of it I'm trashing because they're so awful and not the direction I want to head, but I learned not only 'just start', but so many skills from just 'doing'. Looking into 2024, these points were so helpful! My focus for the year ahead is to build my video library without focusing so much on 'catching' subs. When the value is there, the community will come. And I also appreciate that you recommend either shorts or long form. Permission to not do everything has been granted! :)

You hit the nail on the head about fear. I started my channel simply because it was on my Bucket List. Making money or tons of viewers was not the main goal and yet there was hesitancy as I didn’t want to look stupid to the world. Regardless, I tossed the fear factor aside and just started enjoying the process.

So glad that I have "permission" to stop the UKposts shorts. I just am not a shorts creator. I decided to stop when I released a really slick two part clinical diagnosis (part one being the set up and part two being the payoff) only to have someone tell me that "I could make a video longer than 30 seconds" and shouldn't have broken it into two parts. In reality, each short was maxxed out at 60 seconds.

Great video Nate! Much of my focus is turning toward 2024 so your next video is very timely. We have two videos left to produce and publish this year. December is always a challenge because of its inherent “distractions”. Taking time to be with family & friends and to celebrate the holidays becomes more of a priority this time of year. That is why I adjust my publishing schedule to accommodate for the end of the year. Having a lighter schedule in December also allows time to strategize and plan out the new year.

As a small creator, I absolutely relate to that last point 😅 I've been going back and forth about whether I should stick to my current style (more editing, fully scripted) to one that's more authentic (less editing and scripting). I want my videos to connect with people and feel more “down to earth”, but I’m not sure if I’ll end up alienating my current audience or just having those videos fail completely. I might just be scared about getting outside of my comfort zone (especially when it comes to improv-ing since I’m not the most concise speaker), but I really want to try to move to this style in 2024-my goal is to make my videos feel more like “hangout sessions” rather than “just videos”. In the words of Think Media, I gotta punch fear in the face 👊
@OutdoorsEngineer

Your transition that you would like to do doesn't have to a sudden change. Sprinkle the new format into your publishing - do some testing. Or you could go about it as "you do you." I think people enjoy authenticity and I personally seem to get turned away from more of the staged production.

Great video, Nate. In line with a lot of your points, I think there's a real trap in creators wanting to go viral and "blowing up". In my opinion, it's neither realistic to aim for this (too many unpredictable variables), nor is it sustainable. It's much better to go for consistent, steady growth by creating high-quality, focused content. That way, subscribers and viewers who eventually find you can enjoy the library of content you've already produced, instead of having to wade through your previous failed attempts at going viral. In addition, steady growth means you won't be overwhelmed by a sudden influx of (potentially temporary) fans who have too much sway over your decisions before ultimately leaving.

wow thanks!! Great tips for 2024. I started in 2018, tried different channels for different niches that I was interested in. After a convo with a friend I started a new channel in June or July, posted a couple test vids, nothing. In late Oct or Nov I got serious about creating content and posting on a schedule (3 times a week) and in a month I went from 0 to monetized. Mostly because I hit on a topic in my niche people often ask me about IRL so I decided to cover that topic as it's in my lane. To say I was shocked is an understatement. gimmicks, stay in my lane/ niche, stay on topic, stay focused on providing good information (if the content is good for the audience it's good for me), I don't do trends

I spent a few years ahead of stepping forward with content creation fixing my issue of avoiding finishing things. From personal projects to hobbies, video games and even finishing tv shows - I realized I had a massive issue of stopping part-way. It was so many half-done things piled up over time, it felt like I had built up a bad karmic groove for always stopping partway. So, I focused several years on being better at doing and completing things while also getting fully clear on what I wanted to do with content creation. I knew this would ensure I built up a lot of reps of finishing small things, and also larger things, so I was in the groove of doing and completing before committing to starting content creation, and also that I was so clear and excited about my vision for it, that it would carry me through. I really like your last point, Nate! I think maybe my approach was a little extreme, but I wanted to be fully sure I would be in the right groove of being a doer and not just a dreamer, and one that was good at finishing tasks before committing completely. That last point, made a lot of sense to me and felt a bit along that line of radically committing to something and deciding to do all it takes, so it doesn't matter how long it takes to come to fruition. I know Pixar was 7 years of hard work before becoming an 'overnight success'. It can take a lot longer to get to our goals than folks realize! But, it is still worth doing, so you got to be rooted in something deeper.

Once MW3 came out, I ditched the shorts and focused on long from How To videos for MW3. Within the last few weeks I have jumped from 420 to 600 subscribers, which is my fastest growth thus far! I used very simple thumbnails with context to solve viewers problems that didn’t already have a solution on UKposts. Essentially supply and demand. So looking forward to your next video! I'm planning on putting this channel on the back burner and starting new and fresh with a channel that is more in line with my profession and passion. I'm so excited about it that it is hard to focus on what to do in what order while trying to manage my time efficiently while working full time. And also considering brining someone else who is just getting into my field on board as well. It's health related and information based, so my main concern is getting the channel to grow without having an affiliation with a large healthcare system. That being said, those large healthcare system's information, while good, is very dry and not always practical, so I think there is an extreme need for a different perspective. But, prioritizing and setting the path for success are my current interests. I've done it before with this channel, but not as intenionally. I can't wait to hear what you have to say so that I set up my new channel for success. Thank you! (Also interested in knowing when you'd suggest getting more one on one feedback from experts such as yourself or others in your space. I need to get it going first, but if very intentional from the get-go do I have someone look at my progress at 6 months, 1 year, a certain video release count, once making a little income, etc?) Ok, that was 5 times longer than expected. I'm a bit excited for my next, and more focused venture!

Cannot wait to see the “planning your year” vid. As someone just finishing year 1 on UKposts, I still don’t feel like I understand all the rhythms quite yet, so I’d value your experience. P.s. missing card at 9:45 for the roast vid

As always you give good advice. Thank you. I love the start in the middle pieces. It's good advice on how to shift energy to something that feels better on screen. :)

I can attest to using shorts. I made a few, got some subs, did nothing for my channel. Now I just stick to mostly long form. I am trying to improve my thumbs and titles which is hard because I cannot script most of my content due to the nature of my vids(funny skits aside). Trying to break the mold of the average outdoor channel is a challenge but fun and I receive mostly positive feedback, so I will keep focusing on the long term audience that enjoys the style I am still perfecting. Thanks for all you awesome advice Nate! How can someone not know your name is Nate? An alter ego would be hilarious, I have a few myself! 😁

Yup I haven’t made a short in months. This has increased my long for views tremendously and I’m a small channel. Excited for the future for sure. I have been putting attention to my thumbnails & titles as well. It’s been working.

I’m so happy I found your channel! I’ve been on UKposts for years and the growing is very slow! Would love a video specific to ASMR since those videos are quite different and tricky and the competition is super high!

Hi Nate - thank you once again for the heads up approach to making videos for 2024. I made many of these changes back in September this year (2023) and the results show in the stats. My channel has grown in subs, views and watch hours. Once again thank you for help and inspiration 😃😃

I really appreciate the reasoning for why to do, or not to do shorts👍. There must be value for both parties!! Well said Nate man. I also agree with the topic of making thumbs simple, and not complicated. I used to stress and try to work so hard on them. There is actually a wonderful freedom in simplicity. Another banger video folks. Cheers Nate🤙

Man oh man you resonated with me today. I just started a video podcast, and I really H-A-T-E my intro! But on another note, I had a business coach tell me that I should start posting more shorts here to grow my channel. While I have a great idea for a series of shorts, you have made me rethink. This month I need to spend some time deciding what direction to take my channel in 2024. I have been a bit all over the place.

I've felt called out quite a few times in this video I need to watch it again and write down the stuff. And great job Nate, this was one of the most resonating videos for me from your channel. 😀 I've been posting videos for a few years already and my problem is I like doing different things so my channel has slowly shifted from solely art channel to bullet journaling one and now it's both bujo AND reading and I know it's not the best strategy but honestly, youtube is labour of love for me. And yes, fear, always present and on top of that there is handicap? (if I can call it that) of not being born in English speaking country and thus not being as expressive and spontaneous in my videos because I'm constantly translating words in my head and also looking them up in translator. That said, I love my channel and I want to get better in 2024. I'm currently thinking about profile and banner changes (maybe channel name as well) but I want to think them through properly first. Thank you again for posting amazing videos. And sorry for the wall of text. 😅

Yay Fear! I was just thinking on this recently, I had a fear over my potential longform content getting backlash which is foolish in hindsight, given ive only been doing shorts this year lol. Im glad i just spent this year on my shorts though, I've learnt alot on all aspects of production so in a way my longform debuts going to be significantly better than if i just jumped straight into it
