Helikon Tex MESS TIN - STAINLESS STEEL
Forward : There are a lot of mess kits on the market today and this is one of them; you all know that I have a thing for mess kits so after receiving this as a gift from a viewer, I have been using it out in the field and I’m here today to share my thoughts about it.
Agenda Free Link : www.helikon-tex.us/mess-tin-s...
Price : $19.90
Weight : 1.6lbs
Materials : Electropolished Stainless Steel
3 piece kit : Lid, large pot and small pot
Capacity:
Large tin: 1 liter; 15 cm in diameter
Small tin: 0,7 liters, 13 cm in diameter
Cover: 15,5 cm in diameter
A big thank you goes out to the viewer who sent this in to me to review, I really appreciate it. While I’m not longer doing viewer mail videos on the channel if you want to send something in for me to potentially to review, feel free to do so.
When using the Helikon Tex Mess kit another system came to mind and that would be the Czech Mess Kit which is a 3 piece kit as well. The difference is that the Czech military version is make from aluminum.
With that being said, this is not a unique design as there are plenty of companies who have variants of Cookset which look just like this one.
Pros :
Good overall quality
Fairly durable
Excellent value especially when you compare this to other 3 piece systems - some can be very expensive with many over $50. Some even higher.
Lid can be used as a plate, a frying and can be used as a cutting board
Handles are comfortable to hold
Cons :
Warping
Heavy
No locking mechanism for the handle
No cover for the handles but in truth, if you keep the handles away from your heat source they will be completely holdable in most situations
No handle included to hold the lid when using it as a frying pan
No tab to lift lid from pot
Nothing New - Copied design
Summary :
This is a fair quality system for the money and for the $20 you are getting 2 very solid stainless pots and a multi use lid.
While I like this kit, I can’t help but be a bit disappointed namely because the company simply copied other existing systems instead of improving upon what was out there. A few simple alterations to this would make this a better Cookset that is easier to use.
In the end, I can recommend this for those who are looking for a stainless steel pot Cookset who don’t mind the weight or the potential warping issues. For the money, it is good enough even though it isn’t as good as it could be.

I love your gear reviews. So often it can be difficult to find budget friendly options for moderate camping. It's nice to see a range or products from something like this, which is fine for light trips and casual usage, to some of the stuff you need to thru hike or camp in challenging conditions. Thanks for what you do.

I have a number of Helikon-Tex products--all of them fabric-based--and they are all fantastic. I don't know if Helikon is just dabbling in expanding their offerings, but based on this review, it is not something that inspires me to get this kit. Hopefully, the company will make positive use of the feedback they receive and produce a mess kit worthy of their brand name.

thanks for the review. I've been using an MSR stainless kit for 30+ years - two pots and a lid. The grips are not attached. Just got to remember (and not lose) the grips for handling hot pots and the lid. Yeah, it's stainless, so not the lightest. Cleans up well. Thought about swapping for titanium because of weight, but I've learned how to cook with it and has served me well. Weaknesses: a bit heavy; a separate strap or bag necessary to keep it together (lost more than I like to remember). Strengths: a real trooper; never a functional failure; sturdy - often used it to protect other items.

Your cons are right on the money. I have had this kit for more than a year now BUT I really like it dispite the cons and I'm planning to "add" a handle to my top (as they Helikon-Tex calls it) Haven't had any warping of the cook set. To get the glue off...peal the sticker, rub olive oil on it, let it set for 15 minutes, then use a scotch brite pad with soap and it comes off..

I was looking at getting this a couple of years back but in a way I'm glad I didn't. I don't have problems with weight and don't rate Ti or Al cookware as they burn food too easily so it has to be good stainless. But the shape and size of means it takes up a lot of space, and packing appropriate stuff inside without wasting space is tricky. I already had a stainless Dutch Army canteen cup - same as the GI cup - with a Pathfinder lid so I just needed more cookware to enable me to cook food in another container (keeping the canteen cup just for boiling water, I hate having to wash it before I can make a hot drink after eating), also to fry food. So instead I bought a set of 2 Dutch mess tins - like the Brit & Commonwealth ones but stainless not alu - plus a replica of the very rare British mess tin lid/frying pan. The rectangular shape means it takes up less space in my pannier bag (I go bike stealth camping & bushcrafting) and it's easy to use all the space inside it by packing it with MRE pouches and suchlike, and it's ideal for heating up those MRE pouches, I can do 2 at a time, you just need to swap them over from time to time, and keep turning the top pouch over. A winning setup. I only normally take one of the mess tins with me though.

While it may not be perfect I applaud Helikon-Tex for making the cook set affordable for the common person. I was looking at a tiny shirt pocket stove today that was recommended on another channel. It was $39.99 and $55 with a base plate and small windscreen. Probably cost a manufacturer in China a couple bucks to make. I do love Helikon-Tex and have been very happy with their products but I shop for deals whenever I can.

I've used an Ozark stainless steel Mess Kit from Walmart (I think I paid ~ $6 for it). It's useful, but it also warps in the fire. Just the way SS is, especially in the thin gauge used in such cookware. Perhaps titanium is more resistant, but it's also more expensive.

Another good review. I’ve got the Czech mess kit in aluminum (which didn’t warp after some months use). This looks much the same and seems to have the same issues I’ve noticed. I’ve wondered if anyone makes an improved titanium version of this kit (lid tabs, graduations, locking handles and included pot/lid grabber) for a reasonable price. If so it could become my go to rather than the Stanley.

Helikon Tex, I used to love their clothing - reasonable priced, excellent quality and good, intelligent design. But then I bought a few items where the quality was not so good - cargo shorts where the stitching to fix the pocket to the shorts has missed the pocket seam completely, shock-cord hood adjuster which pulled out when I was trying the garment on for the first time, zips that slip, and even worse a zip that locked, meaning I couldn’t get my inhaler during a bad asthma attack. And the prices have gone up! Because of these issues I won’t buy any Helikon stuff any more, I don’t feel I can trust it in the field.

I’m not a huge fan of the non locking handles though. I did pick up a stainless version at one point. It was not branded helicontex. Appears to be a copy of the old Czech army mess kits other than not being aluminum. Which the similar designs from other companies just copied as well. Though this one appears to be an exact copy. I have 2 of the Czech kits. The inner pot isn’t usually needed so is easy to just leave behind to save some weight and add some storage space inside the pot. Given decades of inflation accrued since I first began backpacking, I have to say that the Helikon-Tex Stainless Mess Kit does look like a decent value today; but I share your opinion that it would benefit from refinement of design. On that note, please consider the following narrative of my own experience: Having been on a tight budget for most of my life, and all of my young life, I made do with cheaper products like the Stansport line. Even today, having commenced my eighth decade of life, I find it difficult to justify spending something like $80 on a single cooking pot even for my home kitchen, let alone incidental camping usage. In truth, I miss my old aluminum Stansport cook set. It was reasonably lightweight and could be assembled in different configurations to suit the needs of a particular outing or wilderness adventure. For example: I almost never used the largest pot for backpacking. It must have had a capacity of eight quarts or more; and I generally used it mostly for heating wash water in vehicle accessible locations such as deer camp. The plastic mugs that the set contained were hardly worth using--thankfully, theives did not get my old WW2-vintage canteen cup--but the nesting aluminum pots, plates and pan/lid suited me just fine for decades until two of them eventually developed pinholes in their bottoms--those were partly my own fault for poor maintenance and storage conditions--and the rest were stolen by burglars who made off with two "action packer" containers of my outdoor gear, among other items. I liked the simple detachable handle that slotted snugly into a receiving bracket riveted to the side of a pot. The handle never got too hot; a single handle sufficed for all the pots and pans in a set; and it never did not flop around or feel unstable when moving a pot from the fire and pouring out its contents. The set was not constructed of a high alloy aluminum. Indeed, the relatively soft items distorted and dented easily; but with mere finger and thumb pressure one could reform a bent pot's lip sufficiently to again seat its lid easily and snugly as well. I never had to fight to remove a pot lid!

Yeah but for not a lot more if you shop around you can buy all you need to cook for decades. I use a Dutch Army stainless canteen cup plus a Pathfinder lid, Dutch Army stainless mess tins, and a replica British mess tin lid/frying pan. All of which are bombproof and cost me a grand total of £20 (admittedly not including shipping which would be £10 more in total) so around $26 and just in the 3 years I've owned them I used them dozens of times. Okay I'm in the UK so that gear is probably hard to get in the US, and I got lucky finding the canteen cup in the basement of a surplus store in Holland and only paid like 3 bucks for it, but you have similar possibilities in the US, e.g. go for a good old 44 pattern GI cup in stainless, and the old US mess kit designed for the chow lines so not the best but better than anything throwaway. I bet you could get the lot for 20 bucks max over in the US. Also those are classic militaria which have some pedigree. Alternatively I know that you can pick up the Stanley Adventure cooksets and pans over there in Walmarts and Home Depot, for a lot less than they cost over here, I think you could get a decent starter setup also for around 20 bucks. We pay that for a pack of Marlboro over here lol.

Pick up the ikea children cooking set. It has some good items for fire cooking IMO.

Yeah, that sticker would bother me too. I mean, whatever is holding it on is probably toxic once you put it in a fire. I would assume that it isn’t an issue for your food directly, but breathing that stuff can’t be good.

My biggest complaint with Helikon-Tex is that their US store is kind of a joke. Compared to their international store, lots of their products are either out of stock or simply not even offered. On the off chance that you can find a US based dealer for an item you want, depending on what it is, their mark up is almost worse then paying for international shipping.

Total kit weight is 1.6lLbs,if you can't carry that in the field,I suggest staying in the city. And using the lid as a frying pan ?,how'd you get it on and off the burner/fire ? ....... no handle !.

Most of us would carry a multitool. Either that or an aluminium pot grip would do the job. Agree with you on weight, I carry stainless cooking pots (Dutch Army canteen cup and mess tins) but I prefer the rectangular format of them as it takes up less space, you can pack the inside efficiently e.g. with MRE pouches, and you can heat MRE pouches up in them efficiently.

Awful. I'll stick with my Trangia 27. They should have got rid of the fixed handles and just provided a pot lifter. Having a bag for it would negate the need for the locking handle and also helps keep the inside of your rucksuck clean. The cheap price doesn't make up for all the cons.

If you don't need it to be as big, you'll pay $5 for about the same thing, just half the capacity. And the pot does have a pull tab

They really should have incorporated a handle into the frying pan. It wouldn't have been difficult.
