Millman probably the nicest guy on tour. The tennis ball rolling on the shirt is not ideal but I know plenty of people who did it not for the sweat factor but just as a habit. Sure he lost that Aus open in straight sets.

The Millman this is completely blown out of proportion. 1, he's the one serving, so all or 99% of sweat is gonna be off that ball by the time it reaches federer 2, he probably was just doing it for a last sec dry off of his left hand since he's a 2 hander on his BH (which BTW I've only seen players with 2 handers do this) 3, Millman is one of the STRICTEST sportsmanship players on tour, he's given points on his own volition from double ball bounces, net touches the umpire doesn't see

If you were to talk to pro's they'd basically say never give a point and just stick to the umpire's call. The problem is the moment you give a point then you expect the other player to reciprocate and if you feel they don't it gets nasty. This can get out of control, grudges develop. Professionals want to keep it professional and the best way to do that is to just keep to the official rulings knowing you win some and you lose some.
@huzcer
@huzcer 4 місяці тому
@@NamesAreRandom why do you see the World number 1 and 2 Djokovic and Alcaraz conceding points at times then when they know the incorrect decision has been made. they do it because they would expect the correct decision to be made for them. otherwise the point of actually having the rules of the game is lost.
@richietaylor9870
@richietaylor9870 4 місяці тому
@@huzcer It can hardly be called a 'dirty play' though, not unless he'd arranged for the ball kid to run onto the court beforehand. And who know's, perhaps Troicki wouldn't' have won the point? He could have done a Djoko-smash and totally shanked it, or maybe Murray gets a racket to it and gets the ball back in. Since you can't say with 100% certainty that this couldn't happen, it's not fair to dock Murray a point that he hadn't definitively lost. And I don't really see what World No. 1 or World No. 2 has to do with it. Murray has, after all, been both before.
@huzcer
@huzcer 4 місяці тому
@@richietaylor9870 I didn't say it was a dirty play - I'm pointing out to the other poster who said that pro's go by the ruling when there are multiple examples from both Djokovic and Alcaraz (and many other players over time) - current 1 and 2 over-ruling the ruling when they know the call is not correct, even though it is against them. who is more professional than that the current top players in the game to pick up on the point of pro's? and yes Murray not doing it here marks him out in contrast. obviously.

The worst case I've ever saw was Anabel Medina Garrigues vs Serena Williams in 2013. Anabel during the changeover breaks would demand the balls from the ball boys and then purposely rub them and destroy them on her racquet. If these are the 8 dirtiest plays you could find it says a lot for tennis. 3 of these weren't even bad plays, they were bad calls (judgment) from the umpire and had nothing to do with the players. And 1 of them was Djokovich turning his back to an incoming smash. The only shocking 1 here was Gaston's action, which rightly got him a huge fine.

As said in the beginning of the video, the rules of tennis are such that playing dirty is quite difficult in the first place. You're just typically not going to get away with more than very subtle or very occasional things in umpired professional matches. At more amateur level competitive play, however, there's of course a ton more potential for cheating with hooking or egregious foot faults or gamesmanship etc. because the players are calling the match themselves.

Umpires have NO role in coaching, or impacting the match by letting players either take too much time between serves or slowing the game down. Like that lady who refused to make the opponent be ready for the serve: recently, Coco was serving - she had to wait for the other player to step up to the line. Coco complained & The umpire actually told Coco that she was serving too fast. First, totally not true. Second, not her place to slow things down. Clearly showing favorites here!

The cameron norrie smash is completely and obviously accidentally hitting djokovic. Djokovic started walking away, but Norrie is watching the ball, he has no idea that djokovic stopped playing, which was kind of a pussy move TBH. Norrie has to make the overhead to win the point so he goes middle which is the correct play in this situation since it limits your opponent's time to react and angles to reply with. Novak was a baby about this. I am not a norrie fan, but the only thing controversial about that play was anybody crying about it.

The Musetti ball can be hit with that much spin if you launch a slice at it, but in this case doesn’t. Also that Norries situation is actually very opposite, guy was looking at a high ball, he knows Novak is there but he won’t know if he facing him or not. If you see typical Novak you know he’s going to fight for the point especially when Norrie is not know for having a strong net game. The apology could have been better though I will say that. Same with the Tsitsipas situation. Cannot stand him, but if he apologised then it wouldn’t have been bad coz that was a dog shit volley from Alcaraz and you’ve seen Kyrgios make a shot like that against Wawrinka so it’s not impossible but very unlikely, same situation with Kygs and Nadal at Wimbledon, don’t come to net if you can’t handle a ball been put at you. John Millman actually wasn't trying to make the balls "wet" to slow them down in my opinion. Millman was not trying to wet the ball. He was rolling it to reduce the fluff. After a new ball has been played for a few games, the outer material gets fluffed up. This increases air friction and shows the ball down. Many players do it, including myself. I'm pretty sure Lendl did. It actually restores the ball to the condition it was in when it was fresh out of the can. Not cheating at all.

The physics here don’t make sense. If you have ever had someone sweating a lot, and putting the ball in their pocket and you can feel that it is now becoming moist, the ball never speeds up. Try it out sometime on the core. The nap absorbs that moisture, and that makes the ball heavier and increases the fluffiness. Unless the ball is soaking wet, which would make the nap flatten down. Like I say, try it out some time. Take a spritzer and spritz the ball lightly. Now hit some shots and see if the ball is suddenly faster. It won’t be.
