The Abrams tank. The Path to Triumph on the fields of Ukraine
• The Abrams tank began to appear frequently in videos and this is the result of its use in eastern Europe.
• The history of the creation of this tank dates back to the early 60s, when tank builders became interested in turboshaft engines.
• The turbine is lighter and more compact than a diesel engine, does not require warming up before starting, accelerates faster.
• However, the turbine is voracious and requires the installation of large fuel tanks.
• The Abrams tank was developed on a competitive basis by engineers from two companies - Chrysler and General Motors.
• The tank was supposed to surpass the M-60, but not go beyond the 40-ton weight limit.
• The technical specification for the XM-1 prototype stipulated the need to install a 105 mm cannon.
• After the Arab-Israeli war and difficulties in creating the Bushmaster cannon, it was abandoned in favor of a conventional rifle-caliber machine gun.
• It was necessary to increase the distance of effective destruction of armored targets and the number of shells in ammunition, strengthen armor protection and reduce the time to prepare the vehicle for combat.
• The Abrams tank was developed as an "anti-tank tank" designed to fight Soviet tanks.
• The US military initially supported the 105 mm rifled M68 cannon, but after the appearance of new Soviet tanks with a powerful cannon, they began to consider the possibility of installing a 120 mm cannon.
• Chrysler has signed a contract for the design of the main battle tank.
• The first pre-production tanks were manufactured in 1978.
• Tests revealed problems with sand getting into the turbine and soil into the crowns of the driving wheels.
• The tank was successfully fired from various types of weapons.
• Abrams have large dimensions and heavy frontal armor, which makes them vulnerable in urban environments.
• The experience of fighting in the rasputitsa on chernozem showed that the fate of the "Abrams" in real battles differs little from the fate of their "relatives" - the German "Leopards".
• Abrams can be quite good in defense, but do not forget about the possibility of hitting them with large-caliber aerial bombs and combat helicopters with guided anti-tank missiles.
