Welcome Gardeners! It’s time to plant some blooms for my April Blooming Garden! Every month this year I want to plant something that I know will be blooming next season at this time. Goodness, I felt a bit stressed watching the first part of this video, Janey! I initially thought you were a passenger, rather than the driver! It really didn’t look safe. Perhaps you might consider positioning the camera a bit more centrally on the dashboard, so that you’re not having to look to the side so much? We’d get several penalty points if we were caught doing that in Britain 😬. Plants are lovely though xx

Janey you don’t need to convince us how amazing it’s going to look…and it already does. We’re in awe at what you all have accomplished. While moving to a new home, dealing with a broken foot and everyday life as a mom wife etc… You have introduced us to amazing gardeners, gardens, shows and plants. Hi Janey! You are right ... that is the Tiger Swallowtail butterfly ... and they love verbena. (The giant swallowtail's host plants are citrus though and not the Tiger swallowtail. ) If you look up the host plants for the Tiger Swallowtail in California they are aspen, willow, and cherry trees (among others). 😊 I think it is fantastic you are planting things that butterflies (and hummingbirds) will love.

Love that homestead verbena (and everything else you brought home!) ... and yes - Dr. A and Dr. Dirr are the best. Both have written books that are used as textbooks in horticulture schools all around the world : Dr. A - annuals & perennials, and Dr. Dirr - woody plants & trees. And Dr. Dirr is hydrangea hybridizer to boot !!! Living in Atlanta, I'm blessed to have met both and have been to Dr. Dirr's garden more than once. If any of y'all get the chance to meet either of them or visit their gardens - Do It !!!! a wealth of knowledge and both will encourange and inspire you to get out and garden ...

Could Monte be the culprit to why your plant seems to be dying? My friend used to train her dog to do his business in the same area in her yard. It made clean up easy and protected her gardens at the same time. Everything is looking amazing! Love the monthly blooms idea too.

We trained our dogs to go in a part of the yard because their urine turns the grass green especially in summer

Hi Janey, we enjoy your videos very much. You mentioned in today’s video about Dr. Armitage and Michael Dirr. I am a Master Gardener in Athens, GA and have visited Michael Dirr’s yard a couple of times and it is as beautiful and educational as you would imagine. I have also visited the farm where they have trial gardens for new plants. He is a very nice and generous person as is his wife. They are great people and you don’t leave without a plant or two when you visit.

Look for GroMulch in bags at the big box store , I’ve been using that to mulch my yard and it’s made a world of difference in the soil quality. The previous owners of my property were not gardeners and it was baren poor soil when I moved in. Finally seeing earthworms!

Yes, me too! You will be really happy you kept it when you get a good harvest. There is nothing more delicious than home grown pomegranates. Fertilize them and the fruit will be amazing❣️💕

Janey, I love your videos. I was surprised during your drive to the nursery at the amount of farmland seen from the side and loved that you needed to slow for the tractor. I lived in CA (Simi Valley) for 5 years and after nearly 50 years, still miss my life of growing plants there. You are so blessed to have so many nurseries from which to choose plants.

I love, love, LOVE the verbena around the cedar! That is one gorgeous tree, and when the flowers are in bloom around it, it will be stunning. Coincidentally I also just learned today about swallowtails liking citrus trees. Who knew?! As I was looking at the cedar, I immediately pictured it with Christmas tree lights, don't you think that would be beautiful?! Thanks for the book reference. That's a great idea to listen to an audiobook while weeding. It looks interesting so I downloaded it to my Kindle. It is so nice to see you so happy Janey. That foot injury is just a distant memory now. 🥰 💐

My dogs absolutely want to get at the biotone, it can cause vomiting and diarrhoea. I always thoroughly research everything having two dogs that like to hang out with me in the garden, can't be too careful.

@@kater8730 I cage the area for one week and/or put them in house so they can't see me get it out but sometimes they just smell it. Lastly, my treatments I schedule around a good rain and then gate for a few days after. Critter cages work too.

Janey, don’t worry about having purple flowers. When it is 120*F a view with blues, purple and green will give you a sense of coolness, if only visually.

Another great “verbena” variety is called Verbena Lilacina ‘De La Mina’. It’s a California native, gets about 3x3 ft, blooms pretty much year round, and the pipevine swallowtail butterflies will swarm this plant! The only local place where I’ve found this plant was Morningsun Nursery in Vacaville. Lemuria Nursery is my go to for most plants. Their selection is tried and true for this area and if they don’t have what you want, they will happily place an order for you.

Since I had to go to Higby's for chicken feed, I ended up at Lemurias yesterday. I got one Homestead verbena, two Geranium 'Rozanne' and one Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna'. Today I'm planting them, and it's so fun to see the little section of garden I'm working on coming together.

Love purple. I just went to Home Depot because they have PW 3 for $12. I got Supertunia Royal Velvet and Supertunia Mini Vista Violet Star for my front walkway. They don't carry a lot, but I will take it here is So Cal. They had some pink varieties, but of course I had to go with the purple ones.

You should have gotten the Alestromeria too! Mine bloom and bloom all spring and into summer and they make great cut flowers. I even have a yellow variety which would go great with all your purples.

Alstroemerias are the best! I invite people to take some blooms from my plantings. Just yank the flower stalk instead of cutting it... that stimulates more plant growth.

That verbena will be a showstopper. I have 1 plant in my yard and it always turns heads! It's a blessing that your front corner wasn't covered well. Now you can organize the irrigation before the chips come.

OMG your box came yesterday!!! Love love the color of the hat and Tshirt. Wonderful choice. I put the hat on right away, headed back into the garden and when the Fed Ex guy came (yes, delivering plants😍) he commented on the hat and wants one for his mom. Maybe she’ll be a subscriber! In NC... verbena dies near any type of pine tree...not sure about how they do around cedar type trees. Will be interested in seeing yours. So pretty... looks beautiful 🤩❤

Hi Janey, your gardens are really looking great. You have such a large space now. If you want to save a lot of time and weeding, you can rake the mulch back, add a couple of layers of cardboard, and rake the mulch back on top of the cardboard.

I have homestead verbena here in my zone 8b Texas garden. I extended my planting area to get more. I have been so excited to get my hands on some of the Pink Cashmere based on watching your videos. OH MY WORD is that plant amazing! I went back to the garden center for more. I was able to get more the first time. I went back for even more and they were all out. I will have to live with what I was able to find for this year. It is already a super star.

Good morning Janey! I love how good you are at spacing your plants, I tend to put my plants closer together and then I have to move them. I love purple plants they are so joyful, my garden is mostly purples, blues, peach, pinks and white/cream. The only orange I have is my crocosima and cardinal flower for the hummingbirds. I picked up Superbena pink cashmere today! I did my research and found out which of my 3 favorite greenhouses carried it. I think I know where 2 of them are going but….. it might change in the next few weeks before frost is behind us (Western PA).

Good morning Janey. Here is a suggestion for you: why don't you divide your gardens into zones ie 1/3 is zone A Monday, 1/3 is zone B Tuesday and so forth. This way you don't get over whelmed by the weeds and you start to keep it under control. Then come Saturday and Sunday you can relax or just concentrate on doing gardening/garden shopping. Just a thought. Love what you are doing with your gardens and what you are planting into them.
