June 1944: After the enormous success of the D-Day landings, and with the Allied forces now firmly planted onto Nazi occupied French soil, the Germans were being forced back toward “the Fatherland”. An end to World War II and Nazi tyranny seemed imminent. But with one last card to play, Adolf Hitler launched the greatest counter offensive in European military history. The world held its breath as Hitler’s armies forged forward again to recover ground, forcing the Allies into chaotic retreat.

I used to know an old guy who got caught up in this. He was French and a veteran of WW1. Because he was Jewish he emigrated to the USA in 1936. Despite being 40 years old he was drafted and put in the infantry when the war started. In the Battle of the Bulge he was on patrol with 7 other men and they were captured by the Germans. The krauts shot each one in the back of the head. Except Louie didn't die. After a while he woke up and started walking around. He encountered French partisans and they were suspicious to find a Frenchman in an American uniform. They asked him what unit he was with and confused, he gave them the name of his WW1 French unit. They asked where it was and he replied "Verdun." They took him to the hospital and he took six weeks to recover, then joined the partisans. He fought with them for three months and finally ran into his American unit, which he rejoined. After the war he returned to San Francisco and lived until his late 90s.

That's a very interesting story. Thank you for sharing it with us. My Grandpa fought with an American Army Infantry unit in France in 1944. He was severely wounded by a sniper. The sniper turned out to be a French female civilian that was helping the Germans. She was killed by members of my Grandpa's squad. He did recover and spent the rest of the war in England, guarding German POW's. He did share many stories with me, and he didn't sugar coat it. After he was shot (He was shot in the head. He lost a big piece of his skull) Grandpa was in a coma for 2 weeks. When he did wake up, he asked a nurse what day it was. She told him and he then told her -"It's my birthday". The Drs wanted to put a steel plate in my Grandpa's skull. But they didn't have any. So he lived his life being very careful not to hot his head on anything. He wore a hard hat much of the time when he worked around his farm after the war. He carried a great hate for the Germans all of his life.

My wife's uncle, Grover, was a runner for the 80th Division and was attached to the 285th Forward Observation Battalion when they were surprised on the road from St. Vith. The asshole, Jochim Peiper (Kampfgrupe Peiper) took the prisoners out to the Bougnez cross roads and mowed them down with a machine gun. Grover said after that a German Sgt. came by and shot him in the head. Grover said the bullet ticked off a piece of his skull and spun around in his helmet and that saved his life. After the Germans left he said he led around 12 survivors back to the American lines. Uncle Grover was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his heroic actions that 17th day in December 1944. Jochim Peiper got his just reward in 1957 while he was living in France. They Nazi hunters burned down his house with him in it. Cheers from eastern TN

This is one of the best documentaries I have seen on the Battle of the Bulge. Bastogne was hugely important. Had the Germans succeeded on capturing Antwerp. The war could have gone on for another year. By which time they would have had the V5 rockets and other weapons. Thank god for the bravery of the American soldiers. I really enjoyed viewing this video.

Outstanding! Excellent Documentary with amazing footage! It was amusing when you showed the footage of the tanks sliding sideways on the ice though, especially backed up by the accompanying 'jingle bell' music there. LOL. Although, I'll bet it wasn't amusing for those poor soldiers at the time though. They always seemed to keep smiling though, no matter what, which makes them even braver! So, maybe they did get a kick out of it after all. God knows they certainly needed a laugh, especially through all of that horror & tragedy! God bless the brave Allies & all the soldiers for their courage & selfless sacrifice! May they Rest in Peace! Thank you for sharing!

My father was in this battle. He was in a mortar unit that was overwhelmed by the German attack. His unit retreated to a small town hiding in large trash receptacles while he watched tiger tanks roll by. Being from Minnesota he was used to cold weather but he said it was beyond cold. He made it back to the American lines the next morning. His worst memories were seeing hundreds of dead frozen soldiers in weird positions. He and his unit were given the task of taking several hundred German captives back to the prison camps. Three guys. He said he feared the Germans overwhelming them but said he could see they were done.

For some baffling reason beyond me, Eisenhower and Bradley IGNORED Intelligence reports of the Third Army, and Resisistance reports, that stated for MONTHS that German troops artillery and armor were massing in the Ardennes. It’s like the French in 1940, who couldn’t imagine Blitzkrieg through the Ardennes. But in 1944, the Allies should have known better. Unlike France in 1940, the Allies had seen it happen once. Patton was …rightly…mad as hell that his Army’s Intelligence reports were disregarded by SHAEF.

There are some facts overlooked. Supply lines and advances were badly affected by the failure of Market Garden. Montgomery lost 12,000 troops and the American 8,000' It was also determined that Patton should not rush to Berlin after the concentration camps were exposed; Let the Russians suffer the losses and lives. Operation Valkyrie implicated Rommel and he was forced to commit suicide rather than have his family killed with him. The British documentaries seem to be somewhat slanted. However, the footage is quite good. BTW the Americans were called the "battered bastards of Bastogne" not the battling.

Some of these facts are not quite correct. But there are some claims that just seem unrealistic. Patton moved 130,000 vehicles north? He did keep some units to guard against another target he thought of. Strasbourg represented the Alsace region of old Germany. Wven survuvors of the Malmedy said Peiper never gave the order to kill prisoners. But it is believed he told his subordinates that they can not take the prisoners back. So it was interpreted as being an acrual order. He got his in the end anyway. Lost most of his command and vehicles. Somebody burned his home with him in it. There were locals that were killed by SS and bombing raids. Payback.

Too many inaccuracies. Runstedt didn't resign--he was stacked for defeatism (actually realism). Rommel didn't quit. He was badly wounded. Patton didn't turn his army 90 degrees until the Ardennes offensive was under way. Montgomery didn't consider Patton his rival; after the war, he was surprised to learn people thought that. He struggled with Ike. Anyway, I stopped watching.

This is the old WW2 US Propaganda narrative. Montgomery outranked Patton so there was no bitter rivalry and in pictures Monty and Patton are ofted seen sharing a joke. However the Battle of the Bulge was a FUBAR, after the start the battle Bradley did nothing for 3 days US 12th Army Group was without leadership. Eisenhower had to order Montgomery to take command if US 1st and 9th Armies in the North, while Patton was ordered to Bastogne. After the battle the Americans sought to erase the humiliation of calling in Monty by first concentrating press coverage on Bastogne. Monty and US 9th Army that actually stopped the German advance 65 miles North of Bastogne, were ignored and their part was never fully recognized. This show amply demonstrates that. To placate Bradley, Eisenhower tried to fire Monty in January 1945, until it was pointed out that humiliation was not a military reason to fire him. Instead Ike quelled Bradley's protests by promoting him for a bettle he never took part in!

From Dunkirk, at the beginning of World War II, to Normandy, almost at the end, the Allied Armies did not put a single soldier in Germany. Not a single one. The participation of the Allied Forces in Europe was limited to Aerial Bombing. These actions received a lot of publicity to make us believe that the Aerial Bombings were winning the war. But, there is a very long list of Bombing cities by “Mistake”. The bombing of Nijmegen in the Netherlands (February 1944), it occurred when US bombers returning from a failed mission, as occurred in most cases, were looking for "Optional" targets. Nearly 1,000 Dutch civilians were killed by the bombing. It is proven fact that Aerial Bombardment does NOT win wars, unless it’s Atomic. Aerial Bomb't can destroy cities but does NOT destroy armies. If there is any doubt, then Nazi Germany would have defeated England, after nearly a year of bombing, or the US would have won in Korea, Vietnam or Afghanistan. In fact, it wasn't until 1949-50 that Precision Instruments were available for aerial bombardment. Until then, if a bomber hit within 300 or 400 meters of the target, it was considered a "Bullseyes". In night bombing raids, 500 meters off target was then considered a "Perfect Shot". Propaganda has always led us to believe that we, "The Yankees", beat Hitler. But, I have news for you: The US did not win the war against Germany. The Russians won it. The Allied Army of the US, UK, Canada, Belgium and France (and Poland, and other countries), was able to reach Normandy, thanks to the Soviets destroying the Nazis in Stalingrad, Leningrad, in Kurks and in Kiev, in 1943. It took them 289 days but the Russians won and without the help of nobody… OF NOBODY! Normandy was until June 1944, and Mr. “Hollywood” Patton did NOT manage to set foot on Germany until February 1945, when the Red Army was going over Berlin. In Fact, General Patton was able to cross the border into Germany only when the Russians were 150 kilometers from the Oder River (LOL). The Allies were defeated at Arnhem (Market Garden Sep. 25-1944), and at The Battle of the Bulge (Jan. 25-1945). Now, "Operation Varsity" took place near the end of the War (March 1945), and only 85,000 German soldiers fought against almost 700,000 Allied Forces who could NOT cross the Rhine River due to the heroic resistance of an "Army" of 18-year-olds and 50-year-old Reserve Infantry. So, here General Patton was paralyzed without fuel, while the Red Army was preparing for its last offensive into Berlin. Look here: The average age of the German Army that fought in Normandy was between 18 and 24 years old. And these soldiers faced each other in a ratio of 37 to 1, without Tanks, without Artillery, no Navy nor Air Force. To make matters worse, knowing that four Parachute Divisions were inland behind their backs. This was the reason the Allies won in Normandy. Never the less, It took the Allies 8 months to advance only 500 kilometers from Normandy to Arnhem, and from there, start the Withdrawal back to the border of France/Belgium (What?), facing a virtually defeated German Army cuz USSR. It's a Verifiable Fact that is written in all the History Books, that the German High Command surrendered to the Russian Generals six days BEFORE the first US soldier set foot in Berlin. .

And so your point is??Hitler was defeated. Who cares who was responsible. If the Allies hadnt landed in Normandy, when they did, Hitler wouldnt have split his armies in two, by sending the half his army to France, there fore leaving himself at the mercy of the Russians.Hitlers biggest mistake was to try to fight on two fronts. He got greedy by wanting everything....all of Europe AND Russia. Something had to give.
