It seems but be a double-edged sword. People working from countries with a low currency conversion rate (compared to the US/UK) can’t afford many paid products out the gate, but the “upside” is that people in these areas undercut the hell out of people living in those relatively wealthier areas, making it difficult to impossible to compete with freelance rates.

Most add-ons I've looked into have heavy overlap with existing features that people simply haven't learned about yet so they think the add-on is the only fast or easy way to do it. If you learn the full extent of Blender's stock capabilities and learn the hotkeys, many timesaver add-ons are not timesavers at all. And if you use free assets and keep an organized folder structure of your past projects, then you have a large library of assets to use and paying for additional assets feels more like burning money and robbing yourself of experience of how to make things, which decreases your flexibility and effectiveness in the future since you relied on paid asset packs to hobble things together instead of learning how to efficiently make exactly what you need. Most crucial/obvious necessity add-ons are free, and I haven't been convinced yet of paying for any add-ons for the above reasons.
@KaizenTutorials
@KaizenTutorials 6 місяців тому
Thanks for sharing your insights. I agree that you can do almost anything to an extent in Blender and knowing how to do stuff is great. For example I know how to make foliage assets in Blender. And I could spend a month or 2 making 100's and saving them for future use. However I don't see how that would ever be better than spending $100 to get 100's of assets without all that effort? But I understand where you're coming from and I believe it's one of those things where everyone feels differently on the matter.

Not always the case I regret wasting time fucking around with vanilla blender should’ve just went with addons day1. Hardops boxcutter meshmachine decalmachine machintools and cablerator are just a must have for me. I wont even open blender if i dont have them. Saying that u can do everything in vanilla blender is moronic and a tbh its a shitty mentality to have. Time > money. And dont tell me you can replicate what the addons I mentioned do at the same rate of speed as using vanilla blender lol

Dont forget that u can actually sell the assets once ur done, that helps u make money too
@Purpolorpul
@Purpolorpul 5 місяців тому
Sorry, but that's just not correct and misleading. There are no substitutes for meshmashine, hardops/boxcutter overall. Yes you can make some cringe workarounds with 10 steps or whatever, but why not do in one click with an addon? Vertex Group lacks lots of features in vanilla blender and Popup Vertex Group addon solves lots of those problems. Retopology is so bad in Blender that it could be considered non-existent in Blender. You simply don't have what QuadRemesher or Retopoflow offers. Some minor addons like Save Selection is simply not in blender. Yes you can make a vertex group then assign group and when you need to select given selection you go back to Data tab and choose vertex group, while you can just Save selection and restore selection with one click. That's was just a surface of problems and gaps in blender.
@joshhockey9
@joshhockey9 5 місяців тому
@@Purpolorpul Cas has a point though. There are many people who think those add-ons are the only way to possible do things, when 99% of it exists in Blender already, and has been repackaged as a specialized workflow. Which is fantastic and you should absolutely get them when it makes sense, but there is a side effect where people end up shortchanging themselves from a deeper understanding of the program and experience which can only enhance the use of those add-ons.

The beauty of 3D and the internet is that you can find work and clients anywhere on the world. So if you're good at what you do finding clients in e.g. the US should be perfectly possible. I have been learning how and have unique ideas but have yet to make the leap jumping in the pool, it's a lot of work and unfortunately I can't ignore the importance of realistic financial expectations. Landlord requires cash, he doesn't care. Lol

Absolutely! Thanks for the kind words. If you mean how much a good addon can make when you sell it; 100's of thousands. Just look at something like hardops which has sold around 35000 copies on Blendermarket alone, times $38 is over a million $. But realistically I'd say if you do a good addon it should make you anywhere from $5000-15000.

From my layman understanding of licensing (I can be easily wrong), most of the add-ons using the Blender python API should be licensed under GPL, meaning that you have the right to redistribute it. That is not true for included assets, as they are independent from using the Blender API.

@@KaizenTutorials The main difference of blender to other 3D modeling tools is that it is opensource and supported by the community and donations. By not complying with the blender developer wishes in terms of openness (GPL license) is also unfair. Otherwise, the same could be said for Blender itself, and then it would be as any other closed source software. Of course, compensating people with fair donations or helping with the development, should be the way to go with opensource software.

Copypasta from Blender's /about/license "Sharing or selling Blender add-ons (Python scripts) Blender’s Python API is an integral part of the software, used to define the user interface or develop tools for example. The GNU GPL license therefore requires that such scripts (if published) are being shared under a GPL compatible license. You are free to sell such scripts, but the sales then is restricted to the download service itself. Your customers will receive the script under the same license (GPL), with the same free conditions as everyone has for Blender."

On the other hand channels need viewers to shine in the social media environment, so you need videos that attract viewers that don't have these expensive add-ons. Just be grateful for free advice and ideas and close videos that use software that's way out of your budget. There are many hobbies that are very expensive and people do them for fun.

@@mytube001it’s a poor assumption as for many it’s a full time job. Others who do it as a side gig would love for it to be full time if viable, since working as a professional freelance 3D artist is a horrible and stressful job. It’s why I, as a professional freelance 3D artist, am extremely grateful there is any content out there for free, and that there are channels which circulate news about the 3D industry including their own and others paid addons. I suggest everyone adopt this outlook because complaining about stuff you get for free not being ‘free enough’ is a total and utter dick move.

Yeah I think most has been said in the comments. I'm indeed a full-time UKpostsr, which is crazy yes, but I wouldn't call it irresponsible. :-)

Blender is a free software, but not if you want decent functionalities that you get for free with other DCCs, makes no sense to me to use Blender professionally, not with all its limitations! 🤔🤷

You are aware that cinema4d, Maya and the like also don't have all of these features? People still pay for add-ons when using paid software.

Blender is great in lots of things, but not in everything. Which makes sense. You don't go to a restaurant that does burgers, pizaa's and sushi right? That's probably going to suck. So instead you go to a specialized restaurant focussing on one thing. Blender is more broad than that already but it's specialized to an extent and if you want a different dish you'll need to get it elsewhere if you want the quality to stay good enough.

@@KaizenTutorials The only thing Blender does that Houdini does not, is sculpting and texturing, it is average on sculpting, ZB and 3DC are far better options IMHO, and it sucks at texturing, Mari, 3DC, and Painter are a far better option IMHO, for everything else Houdini leaves Blender in the dust, again, IMHO!

@@gcharb2d to each their own. I haven't tried Houdini. I think sculpting works good enough in Blender and yes texturing is better in Painter.

Yeah... Not sure what to say about this... I mean, this concept is nothing new. A carpenter, a painter, car mechanic, literally every profession you can think of needs some kind of tool set to do the job. Tools cost money, but make your job easier. It's really not some revolutionary new concept for digital artists. You just call your tools add-ons...
@KaizenTutorials
@KaizenTutorials 5 місяців тому
Absolutely true, but a lot of people look at buying said tools/addons/paint brushes, whatever you want to call them, solely as an expense which hurts, not as an investment which will help them make more $

OK off the bat. addon's are useful and can save you time depending on who you are and what you need them for. BUT professional or not, Add-ons should be free, for all, no matter why or who you are, make money from producing content, movies, games, whatever else, but making money from code is no better than paid software, it is anti-community, it is extending Blenders core code so others can use it effectively and ways that are central to everyones benefit, that is why the more paid add-ons make Blender no better than other proprietary software, it needs to stop this is getting worse because everyone is trying to make money from blender however they can, but it's not helpful, everyone including the creators of add-ons benefit from all add-ons for free, and get back more than just money from doing so, no matter how much time you spent making the add-on or not! OPEN SOURCE, stay open! i hate this argument of making money from add-ons because it is emotionally charged by monetary slavery!
@KaizenTutorials

I get where you're coming from, but if it were free there would only be a fraction of the addons available, at a fraction of the quality. Addons would be few and far between, slow in development and will probably never receive updates. Hardly no-one has time to make proper addons, besides their job and daily life, for free.
