@ChrisMaherDIY So I need to buy this setup immediately. Just had my steps installed today and I didn’t even know what cables to run so I ran a single 14ga power cable to the top step and cat6 (23ga) cables for each step. I read below that this is like a WS2811 with 3 copper leads on the LED. But then I read that the ws2815 300led are better? But it has 3 wire connections on the led strip. Can someone please guide me in the right direction. I need to know if I can get the “better” wg2815 from Amazon and if there are any other better ESP32 out there. I also started seeing posts about Quinled. I am now completely lost!!!!!

3:30 Screw terminal connections can become loose over time, even if the wires don't move or are mechanically unloaded. To eliminate this possibility, crimp bootlace ferrules to the wires. Don't tin the wires with solder, that can loosen over time (the solder cold flows under pressure) and it can introduce a weak spot inside the insulation.

@ChrisMaherDIY , this channel is GOLD. The fast pace is perfect, great camera work and sound quality, intuitive instructions. A question for Chris (or anyone): I am planning to cut a Muzata strip in half to use in 2 8ft tube lights (WLED/esp32), each powered by it's own power supply. 1. Each uncut strip is 60 watts. So I would guess each half is 30watts? 2. The power supply shown in the video is 12v/3amp. Isn't this underpowered, at 36 watts? would a 12v/5amp be more appropriate? 3. Since I am running half strips, presumed to be 30 watts each, do I still need the 12v/3A/36w power supply or can I go smaller like a 12v/2a?) thx for any answers or ideas!

Awesome video @Chris Maher - is there a way to get this same idea to work but on a different scale like staircases? Like being able to control them with motion sensors? Imagine being able to set a motion sensor on every single step if needed and make it work to only stay lit for a few seconds as needed?!!!
@1001hey1001
@1001hey1001 8 місяців тому
Would require a bit more work to do custom wiring, But you can setup home assistant and setup the wled plugin to control the individual led strips on the stairs. You can use one strip with custom segments in WLED. Then you can setup motion sensors on the top and bottom of the stairs. Then you can setup a custom automation in home assistant to control the animation for the stairs. This will require a bit of programming but chat gpt is pretty useful for home assistant automations but you will probably need to make a few manual fixes to what it outputs. You will need motion sensors that can work with home assistant though.

I get 60/m ws2812b ip65 and ip67 for $10-11 in a 5 meter roll. this is only 1.5 times that density for 3 times the price and with a third of the controllability. It is cheaper and easier to power though with the 12volts. 144/m ws2812b in 1 meter strips is $6-7. that's $30-35 for a 5 meter run. that yields 1.5 times this density and 3 times the addressability. Thanks for this video; I went ahead and bought a roll of this Muzata LED strip and am looking forward to running it with WLED. I have a few questions, though. I can see on the WLED app that there's a field where you enter your power supply voltage and max voltage. Those appear to be set to 5V on the app but you're using a 12V supply. How should those fields be set? Also, in other demos, I've seen that person using a logic level shifter to bump up the voltage of the data signal. You're not doing that here. I assume it's working for you because you have a fairly short distance between the microcontroller and the strip?

@gorak9000
@gorak9000 8 місяців тому
Don't use RGB leds for primary lighting - they produce horrible white light. If you want both color and white, buy color and white strips - they're not very expensive. Even "high cri" white strips aren't terribly expensive these days (if you buy them from the correct places - trust me, there are places that will rip you off bigtime). For RGB addressable 5M strips, you should be getting them for $15-$20, and for white, probably like $5-6 - high CRI white will be more like $20-30 but well worth it. None of this is "new" - all of these LED strips have been around for ages

@BoraHorzaGobuchul
@BoraHorzaGobuchul 9 місяців тому
No such thing as signal injection. Each led ic sort of boosts the signal. There may be problems when the cable run from the controller to the strip is long, and even for shorter ones when you use different controlling voltage. To overcome such problems if encountered, one needs a level shifter board. Sometimes a "sacrificial pixel" is used for sane purpose, easily Google able.

Any help to how to make ceiling light with these? I am looking for high CRI light that would be like a big circle in the roof. -------- ------------- -------- Trying to make something like that to ceiling. With diameter of 1.5m (5feet) Then hang soft box canvas over it to soften it up.

Hi. Great video - I'm getting closer to diving into WLED thanks to you 🙂 A quick heads-up though - Here in the UK, the Amazon links don't appear to open the strips you use in this video - just a warning to anyone who gets too click-happy and ends up buying something unexpected.

Do it. I recently completed a project with 720 LEDs recessed in my outdoor deck and controlled via WLED. In addition I can access the strip via DMX as.part of a bigger lighting installation!

Two questions if you please. 1) isn’t a led strip that has rgb-w better if you also want to do warm white ? 2) what is Quin Led used for? Is it pure safety and if you need to please led lighting far away? What’s the added value???
@wilbso

You could go with SK6812’s if you want to achieve more accurate whites, I’m pretty sure they offer 5v and 12v variants.

Will 5v still power these or is 12v required? Watching your other videos I did the BTF lightning, I was trying to run them under my bed and only on the sides, so I cut it in half and I used their connectors and couldn't get it to light up. All 300 LEDs worked previously and ensured wled was set for for all 300 it still wouldn't work. Best I could do is get one LED out of sync completely on the second strip that would just be red or sometimes randomly flash. Not sure why, almost like some error. I've cut the strip so many times to try different methods of connecting with different wires and nada :(.

The only thing I can think of is to make sure the gpio is set to whatever data pin you ended up using. I usually use the d2 pin on the esp32 board so I put the gpio setting in led preferences to 2. Other than that make sure the gnd of the esp is connected to the gnd / negative of the power supply. But to answer your first question, 12v is required for this strip. Thanks for watching!
@ajciccone88
@ajciccone88 9 місяців тому
@@ChrisMaherDIY thanks Chris. Good to know 12V required and not supported. GPIO is set properly, the first strip works just fine. The second must be in a connection I'm making. Might have to invest in a better soldering iron.

People will often use a local VPN server setup to create a secure connection into the lan or you could use something like zerotier which I have had luck with in the past.

Those are 97led /m according to the Amazon listing. Those are also wa2811 instead of ws2812b so they are three pixels wide for each color. And btf lighting sells 5m strips that are. 100 led/m for $22 and btf is the best quality I've used in all my projects over the years. The ws2811 is awesome.
@ChrisMaherDIY

WS2812 and WS2813 are amazing. The WS2813 even has another pin for redundancy, should one connection break, the other will take it's place

Ws2815 is even better because its a 12v version of 2813 so less power injection points

Awesome price point and well done video! Though, If possible I have 2 questions. 1. Can I cut this LED strip as I'll be needing about 2.5 of them. 2. What power supply would you recommend for about 43ft (13M)
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 9 місяців тому
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Yes, you can for sure cut this strip! I would probably start out with a 12v 6amp supply and do 1 power injection at the end and see how things look at different levels of brightness and then go from there!

hi Chris, i found this interesting touch display with integrated esp32 , M5Stack is the name of it. maybe you can do a project using this with WLED, so everyone could control his leds without smartphone, directly from small M5Stack in every room. it has also voice control and wifi. would be great if you make a cool project with it. thank you..

@@Post_Oak_ yes.. what i thought was connecting the m5stack as master with other esp32s (and led stripes), so the display will only with wifi and the connected other esp32s (as slaves) with the mounted LED stripes are controlled (effects) from the m5stack display. dont know if it works, but could be great.

Is it possible to run a length of around 200 feet? I am assuming that one power source wouldn't be able to handle that many lengths. What would you advise? I'm trying to create a giant room with app controllable lighting. Then I can have a bunch of presets for different moods. Any advice you be greatly appreciated.

Hi Chris, learned a lot from you lately. i have some ws2812B led which only has 3 wires data, gnd and vin. connected to a small Bluetooth controller which has motion and sound sensor and the other end of this small controller connecting to a usb plug for power. Do you think it is possible to connect this to esp32 and keeps the motion and sound functions? Also i would love to only use power from the esp32 with phone charger.....it is enough for my setup if possible
