Bowie's blistering sarcasm is legendary. I met him a few times, once at a NYC club where he was casually smoking a the bar. Some girl next to me tried to light up and security said "you can't smoke here" and the girl pointed to Bowie and said "but he's smoking!" (obviously this girl lived under a rock or something) and Bowie quickly responded "Rock god, fringe benefits"

I worked at a small repair shop in Woodstock New York. There was a small deli on route 212 which leads you right into Main Street of Woodstock. He used to sit in that little deli, and have lunch with whatever lady friend he had at the time, casually enjoying his lunch, making conversation with his lady at the table, just a regular guy on a regular day. Don’t even get me started about Levon Helm!😂

Back in my days working as a journalist in Australia I met and interviewed him Bowie one-on-one when he was passing through Sydney. He wasn't there to promote a concert and I was the only journalist in Sydney to get with him on that trip. The 'interview' ended up just two guys chatting about any and everything. He was a truly lovely man and I admit when I heard of his death there were tears in my eyes and I was really affected.

I always thought Bowie was interesting, but never really listened to his work other than the hits, than one day I found myself in a rather tough spot and I wasn't working, so I had a lot of time on my hands and I just started listening to Bowie. I was just so pulled into his gravitational field, so to speak, and I like to think he really helped me to get through some shitty times and move forward as a person. Its difficult to explain, but I feel this real admiration for him that I have never felt for any celebrity before or since. I was genuinely sad when I heard of his passing and just when home and listened to Black Star and thought you beautiful genius.

He wasn't just a legend, he was a musician's musician, a bandleader and an immensely talented melody and lyric writer. The thing about David Bowie is that for a start, he was a very talented musician but he always came across as modest and polite the kind of combination that the English like and respect. This shows ,what I always suspected of Bowie. He had a real sense of humour and never stopped being David Jones despite numerous image changes . He was well aware of his critics as much as he was his fans and didn't work against the media, he played along with them , he goaded them from before he was even famous as a musician. Real integrity and some true classic records.

Although no doubt meant with the best of intentions you dishonour him by referring to him as "Sir David Bowie". He was certainly offered a knighthood (in 2003) but expressly declined it stating "I would never have any intention of accepting anything like that. I seriously don't know what it's for. It's not what I spent my life working for.". So he emphatically and deliberately remained plain old Mr Bowie (or Mr Jones) - no (British) gongs, no BS (but he did accept an arts and culture gong from the French Government it was not one which carried with it a title).

John Lennon helped him--especially with dealing with the hateful side of fame (and why they wrote that song "Fame" together). They were friends. Bowie was the one who went to comfort Yoko when John was murdered. THAT info made me cry. Yes, I remember the exact moment when I heard about John, and also when I heard about Bowie. I had the great honor to have seen Bowie's "comeback" concert in 1983 (5 years off due to cocaine) at the US Festival--I went to see him specifically, wasn't sure what to expect. It turned out to be one of the highlights of my life, thankfully "Heroes" & the entire concert is on YT ukposts.info/have/v-deo/iYmqi4Gvf2x7tIE.html Oddly enough the reason I watched this video is because "Ghost Town" is one of my all time favorite movies (the only previous exposure I had to RG) so I was quite curious to find out about this friendship--it turned out to be an amazing gem!

Back in the later 1960's, I was happily watching David Bowie singing as Ziggy Stardust on TV. I was a very early fan! He was in full Ziggy attire, flaming red hair, tight jumpsuit, giant shoulder pads and platform shoes! My Dad who was a very hard working carpenter by trade was sitting in his easy chair reading his newspaper. I asked him what he thought of Ziggy and he looked up from his paper, watched for a bit and said "if he can make a living doing that rather then banging his brains out with a hammer, then good for him!' My Dad was born in 1914 and I loved how open minded he was! I've never forgotten that! I next saw David Bowie in the early 70's at Radio City Music Hall, he was no longer Ziggy. Great concert!

Ugh Bowie was so great. He's my hero too, and in a way he did save my life on multiple occasions. His music has a way of making you feel that at least one other person knows what you're going through. And he's actually quite brilliant at deadpan comedy. I wish he did more of that in some way. I kinda wish we got to know him a bit more, but I respect that he didn't have his life all out there for all to see. When I found out he died, and left an album of music as a "parting gift" for his fans...wow. I was speechless. He turned his death into art, and was thinking of the people who loved him and didn't even know him. And it broke my heart to find out that he still had music he wanted to finish and wasn't quite ready to go...I kinda wish his producer never told us that in a way, but in another way I'm glad...because it showed he is human after all, just like all of us. The world feels a little more empty without him in it. But that's life I guess. People come and go, but he was one of the people able to leave a legacy behind that will live on forever. He is immortal in our hearts and thoughts.

I met him on the subway one evening. He was holding a small green ukulele and was balancing a tambourine between his knees. He was listening in on everyone's conversations. When someone said something be thought was idiotic, he'd do a little song with those words as lyrics. How we all laughed at those people. Living on Mars was very boring at the time, just rocks and sand and not much to do, so it cheered us all up. True story, definitely happened.

Such a heart warming and enchanting story... The time has arrived when so many of our Heroes are leaving us. We dare not to guess who will be next, while our own reflection stares back at us from the mirror, a little more wrinkled and grey at each passing year. David Bowie will be sorely missed, he came from a time in our lives when we all thought that we were immortal, encapsulated in some state of permanent youth. How wrong could we have been. Celebrate the lives of our Heroes and what they gave to us, be it music, comedy or acting. and prey that the the lights on our own personal stage continue to burn for just a little longer.

I still miss him, that moment in January 2016 still hits me, it was a moment of amazement and is quite haunting to remember. I wish I'd known more about Bowie and had more deeply felt something for and a connection to him while around other people before he passed away. I wish I had met him and had a down-to-earth chat with him, exchanging my appreciation of and enthusiasm for his styles of music, the way some of his word choices and lyrics flow in some of his songs and his upbringing in London and how I think and feel for him while I pass through certain areas in London like Bromley and the SE. He is the only celebrity/famous person I feel sad about the passing of who I never knew

What I love about the British is they are very self-deprecating in their humor and outlook on the often serious business of living. They make fun of themselves. The lesson? Don't take yourself or life so seriously. It's all over so quickly anyway. We need more of that outlook here.😊
