Let’s talk about Ultralight 3 Person Tents! Going Ultralight doesn’t mean you have to go solo or sleep in a tent or shelter with zero room. I found five three person tents under 3 pounds that will lighten your pack and allow you to cover more miles and still have a roomy tent. I even found one budget friendly ultralight 3 person tent at only $369. I’ll walk you through the features of each of the 5 ultralight 3 person tents and tell you why I decided to purchase the Zpacks triplex rather than the Big Agnes Tiger Wall 3 Platinum, Big Agnes Tiger Wall 3 Carbon, MSR Carbon Reflex 3, and Tarptent Rainshadow 3. I should also note that the “ultralight” Nemo Dagger 3 is much heavier than all of these tents at 4 lbs 4 oz (each of the 5 tents in this video are less than three pounds!).

This, like previous videos, is awesome! And you hit the nail on the head. I think you sold me on the Tarpent Rainshower 3. I have been looking for a lighter weight tent that fits a Saint Bernard and I. So you camping with 2 huskies is a similar amount of dog. 1) Price is a bit more of a concern for us otherwise I would go for the Z-packs too. Lol I had originally been looking to replace my ancient 2 person Kelty from 25 years ago (6lbs) with another 2 person tent but I think the 3 person UL tent is the way to go. Light enough to work well but still very versatile and roomy. Thank you. I appreciate the relevant info. Great stuff. (Love the on screen edits too. They crack me up)
@DoseofDirt
@DoseofDirt 2 роки тому
Thanks, Thor! A Saint Bernard is definitely about the same as 2 people! 🤣 Ya, I really did consider the Rainshadow. Tarptent makes high quality tents and the price is impressive for the weight! I chuckle a little to think that some people pay twice that much for a heavier tent! I'm still half tempted to order one to test it out, but two UL tents within a few months probably isn't a good idea... If you pull the trigger, I'd love to know what you think about it! Thanks so much for watching! Truly appreciate it, and especially your comment!

I'm not in the market for a 3 person tent, but you showed a great way to break things down. I did something similar when I shopped for my 2p backpacking tent. Ended up with a Nemo Dragonfly because having a freestanding tent was important to me as well as weight. I'm fairly new to camping/backpacking so I didn't want to rely on having the perfect pitch to have a livable space. I still use a 5 pound 2-person Moon Lence tent that I bought off Amazon for $70 for car camping. Had it for over 2 years and it's holding up like a champ over dozens of trips.

Hey! Thanks for your comment! Ya, it's all about what each persons specific needs are. Sometimes I think we're too quick to say 'this gear is better than that gear' but it all comes down to the person and what they are using it for. I know a lot of people LOVE the Nemo tents! I also still have my 6lb 3 person tent from Amazon (Bessport) and it's holding up pretty well! Survived trips with kids, puppies, wind, rain, snow and everything in between

I hike with my #140 Cane Corso and in the future my GF. I needed a tent that met the same specs as you. However, since this video, the MSR Freelite 3 has a rectangle floor of 66" wide. So I will be looking at that version in addition to the TW UL 3 the regular version.

First of all, Cane Corsos are BOSS! Seriously love them. They are amazing dogs and can be so loving as well. And I honestly just can't get over how awesome they look. Ok, sorry for freaking out about how awesome your dog is! Yes, the 66" wide floor would be nice. I am a little disappointed that the triplex isn't just a little bit wider. I haven't used it for 3 adults yet, but it works for two of us and the two huskies (but admittedly a little cramped). The MSR Freelite looks like a really good option, especially at $480!

Had the same issue a few years ago. Needed at least a 3 person tent for myself and 3 dogs. I couldn't stomach (nor could my wife) paying $700+ for a tent regardless of how light it is. I ended up buying a Sierra Designs Studio 3. Semi freestanding, double wall, single vestibule. Right at 4 pounds and was around $325. Packs reall small too. I can fit myself and 3 dogs, but kinda tight. Also took it on a trip to Wyoming with my 2 sons this past summer and it was fine but would not call it "roomy". A couple of things that I don't like about the Triplex is it seems bulky, plus the trekking pole in the middle of the door opening. I could see banging into that getting in and out of the tent, or the dogs knocking it over, but can't beat the weight. Great channel by the way.
@DoseofDirt
@DoseofDirt 2 роки тому
Thanks, Steve! 4 lbs is fantastic at $325. That Nemo Hornet I referenced in the video is twice that much at the same weight. I still sometime wonder if I should have gone with the Tarptent Rainshadow 3 for trips with the dogs. I find myself hesitating letting them into the triplex. But we'll see how it goes. You're definitely right about the pole right in the middle of the door. It is annoying. I think the triplex can pack up tighter, but I did a pretty lazy job. But for how large it is packed up, I'm shocked at how light it is every time I pick it up. Thanks so much for watching and supporting the channel! Truly appreciated!

@DoseofDirt Рік тому
Looks like a good tent! 3 persons are hard to compare because they are so different. So far my Zpacks has been great, but it's honestly too small for 3 real people, but it is perfect for 2 people, or my, my daughter, and our two dogs, so no regrets here!
@ilyr73
@ilyr73 Рік тому
Yeah, I need the 3 people size for my 3 dogs too and to have an optional room for a second person if needed. About Zpacks, for me the need of trekking poles is a turnoff, as I don't use those and would hate to carry with me, just for the tent... :) A positive side in Telos, that you can set up the outer shell without the inner part, which can provide a quick rain shelter if needed. Of course it's a lot heavier than Zpacks, but still looking for possible candidates...
@DoseofDirt
@DoseofDirt Рік тому
@@ilyr73 Ya, I like a freestanding tent that has the quick fly option. When I'm hiking with my dogs, I only bring the trekking poles for the tent. Just too hard to manage trekking poles, leashes, etc. If you settle on one, I'd love to know which you decided on!

Great info! We got the Marmot Limelight 3p when we started out in 2019. It’s a great tent with all the features, double vestibule, double wall, footprint, poles, stakes…the only downfall is it weighs close to 6lbs. It was only around $300 though. Would definitely like to consider one that is 3lbs or lighter. Thanks for the info!
@DoseofDirt
@DoseofDirt 2 роки тому
Sounds like a great tent! My first 3P tent was a similar weight. Close to 6 lbs! Which isn't bad if you're splitting the weight between 2 or 3 people, but since I'll often take my young kids or dogs, that meant the entire tent was on my back, so the lighter the better! 🤣 If you're on a budget, that Rainshadow 3 seems like a really good option for under 3 lbs, and and I know Tarptent makes solid tents. But sometimes it's hard to replace something that still works, even if it's a little heavier. Thanks for watching!

I hike solo, or with my daughter - when we are together, we each carry our own 2-person tent, which gives us room to keep our gear and stink inside with ourselves. I use a TarpTent Stratospire LI and she uses a Nemo Hornet 2P. For fast-trekking solo trips, I’ve got a ZPacks Plexamid (1-person), and if it’s not bug season (or I just want emergency shelter in my day pack) I have a ZPacks Hexamid (1-person) tarp with doors and bathtub floor.
@DoseofDirt
@DoseofDirt 2 роки тому
Thanks Jon! I’ve heard good things about both the Stratospire and Hornet 2. I was bummed to find out that there wasn’t some sort of Stratospire 3 that could give the triplex a run for it’s money! I agree that it’s nice to have the space of your own tent for gear, which is another reason I went with the triplex. Until I can justify a pricy tent purchase, I’ll probably take it on solos because the thing is just so dang light! Sounds like you’ve got an awesome tent collection! So you have a favorite? Or is it just different tents for different seasons/uses?? Thanks for watching man!

Thanks man! I know they have a free standing pole kit for other tents but I don’t think they have one for the triplex. There is a separate tent called the ‘free trio tent’ but it’s a little smaller than the triplex and says it can’t be set up with trekking poles. So not sure if you can get a freestanding kit for the triplex or not. But I do think you can get r on fiber poles to use (instead of trekking poles) but it would still have be staked out the same. Nice video Jeff! Seemed like a lot of tongue twisters in this one! Always tougher when I'm making a gear centric video to get all the details out of the dome haha. I think it's also important to note that even tho Zpacks is longer and higher it's because of the nature of it being non-freestanding. The slope of the fabric is steeper than on a free standing or semi-freestanding tent so the dimensions tend to be larger. You're not necessarily gaining any interior space because of it (in some cases). I'm glad you could make the $ work for this tent, I still can't. Not that I can't afford it, but because it doesn't make sense from a price standpoint. I'd much rather do a couple tents and split the weight than go with just 1 tent. I think I've seen vids where your dogs are well behaved in tents and I hope that holds up! No way I'd ever bring dogs into a dcf tent. Interested to hear how that shakes out.
@DoseofDirt
@DoseofDirt 2 роки тому
Thanks, man! Ya, I sold my mountain bike when we moved and used some of the money for this tent. Otherwise I never would have even dreamed of it! 🤣 I've asked a few people with dogs and zpacks tents how they hold up, and everyone seemed to say they were good. Still not sure I'll trust them, but we'll see. I may get a piece of tyvek to put in the tent just as a precaution. But we'll see. And you're right about the slope! Taller peak height doesn't mean the most interior volume! Thanks for your comments!

@DoseofDirt
@DoseofDirt 2 роки тому
It's incredible, isn't it?! A 3/4 day fast packing trip sounds awesome! I'd like to get into fast packing at some point as well. I haven't done a video about the lightest sleep system, but have looked into it a little because it does interest me. As far as the tent, I'm not aware of any lighter than the Zpacks Plexamid--it's a 1 person made by the same company as this 3 person I bought. It's only about 15 oz (433 grams), but will set you back about $600 USD. A more budget friendly choice could be the Lunar Solo at only $250, but it's heaver at 26 oz (737 g). For sleep system, I have a pad called Sleepingo from Amazon. It's only 14 oz and the comfort is decent. It's only $40. There are some lighter like the Therarest Uberlite (small is 6oz/170g and large is 12oz/340) but as you can imagine, it's pricey! Sleeping bag is tricky because it all depends on how cold it's going to be (impacts the pad as well). If it's going to be cold, Zpacks and other UL companies have some super light but warm quilts (for example, a quilt rated down to 0 degrees C is $370 from Zpacks). But I've also heard people have pretty good success with sleeping bags or quilts from AliExpress. None of mine are light enough for fastpacking (lightest is about 2.5 lbs).

@@DoseofDirt whoa, thanks for the detail reply. Cool. I will definitely look into all of the above … The event will most likely be over the summer but would like a few practice runs too , which would be a little chillier. What sort of size pack do you think I would need ? Thanks again
@DoseofDirt
@DoseofDirt 2 роки тому
@@movemorenowjames It's tough because that depends a ton on how much space your gear will take up, especially sleeping bag and tent. If you have a super compressible sleeping bag, then you can probably get away with a mid 20 liter pack, but if not you may be in the 30 liter range. I know Ultimate Direction makes some packs for fast packing, and Six Moons and Zerk are two other companies I've been looking at as well, since they have a few packs that are styled more like a hydration vest than a traditional backpacking backpack. Hope you're planning to take us along with you through UKposts. Fastpacking is something I've been looking into, but haven't taken the leap yet since I've been trying to get my base mileage higher and strengthen my hips and core before I take on the additional weight. Definitely looking forward to seeing your content around all of this!

@tiaxanderson9725 8 місяців тому
I'm not actually looking for a 3 person tent, I just need 1 person if that person was me :P Sadly tents seem to operate on a one-size-fits-all principle and that's not my size. I'm fairly tall at about 193 cm (75 inch), so 1P tents often (not always) end up not having enough space for me to just lie in without going diagonal. I'm also not the thinnest and when I just sit up right on my ass I'm already 95 cm (37/38 inch) tall, most 1P tents are between 90 cm and 100 cm so just sitting up fills the available space. And frankly, I just want to be able to put on a t-shirt without much trouble and pants/trousers with only a little. So I automatically start my search at 2P tents as a minimum, but if I want some extra space, especially height, you're already at the 3P tent offerings. I know they make very tall tents, but those are immediately family tents for 4 to 12 people; multiple bedrooms, a vestibule you can put a picnic table in, made out of canvas, etc. I'm not a backpacker, I'm a tour kayaker, so I can afford a little more weight (especially now that my body is loosing some xD) so where are the 3P tall tents, but about 2/3rds the size without sacrificing height?

3 person tent =3 sleeping pad tent = humane 2 person tent. If you only sleep, bearable. But if you need to shelter from weather or bugs, being cooped up in a 2 person tent is pretty crummy.

You are not wrong. 3 full size humans in here is SUPER tight. It will definitely be used more for me and the dogs (2 50 lb huskies), me plus another adults, or me and 2 of my kids. Any more than that and it gets a little uncomfortable. But can't been the weight for the size! thanks for watching!

How does your tent hold up with your huskies nails? I’m kicking around taking my husky for the first time and I’m afraid she will destroy the tent.

When people say 3, this should mean 2 persons if you want to get comfortable, right?

Want a ultra lite with options for wife and I and gear
@DoseofDirt
@DoseofDirt Рік тому
Hey Dwight! In my research, this is the lightest and biggest it gets! I wouldn't call it a true 3 person (definitely not with gear) but I've done 2 people and 2 dogs, or two people with TONS of gear (winter camping). Can't peat the weight to size ratio of this one! Awesome you backpack with your wife! Nothing like enjoying the outdoors with people you love! Thanks for your comment!

You loveable ass...your yawn in the bloopers (well...some real time commentary here... I did yawn at the very end and feel another one coming) didn't get me...though I did kinda force it back...and in the time I typed this out have yawned twice... Edit: didn't watch this cause I'm in the market for a 3p tent...just wanna watch your content so you get better numbers. LOL

🤣🤣 Not always lovable... 😆 The yawning is a constant struggle. I swear I'm chronically tired or something. You kick butt dude! Thanks for tuning in even though you're not looking for a 3P tent. I was really surprised how few options were out there for 3P tents less than 3lbs!

Coming here for $100 tent Mr cheap has problem w $1200 tent but up to $1000 it's ok that's when I realized I need to pack my shit and gtfoh 😂

haha! Sometimes I think a bout how much I spent on this tent and I think about selling it. It was a lot of money. But it works perfect for trips with one other person and the dogs, and it's just so dang light! But by far the most expensive piece of gear that I own...
