F1 is introducing huge changes to its cars for 2022 in a bid to improve the racing and make it more affordable for teams to build competitive cars. Those are clearly good intentions, but will it work? In this video Edd Straw explains how all of F1’s well made plans could be undone if one particualr piece of the puzzle turns out to be wrong when the cars hit the track early next year

@CharlesFreck
@CharlesFreck 2 роки тому
It's not even an issue of size, but weight. The 2022 F1 cars are 190kg heavier then the 2005 F1 cars. In 1991 Senna was racing a car that was 500kg (290kg lighter then 2022 spec) and that was with a fuel tank that was double the size of a modern fuel tank. But it was wider then modern cars (the 2005 cars were thinner then modern F1 cars by the same amount the 1991 car was wider). Why do these cars weigh so much now? Because of safety regulations and KERS/Hybrids. Which means the thing that's killed open wheel racing can't be undone no matter how hard you try, because they'll never remove safety features to make the cars lighter, and keep adding more safety features to make them heavier and safer. And they won't go away from Hybrids. If we could find a way to make the car 90kg lighter, it might stand a chance of being interesting again. Ironically, F1 is now heavier then Indycar by 50kg, when F1 fans in the 90s and 2000s made fun of Indycar for being lumbering and heavy.
@granite_planet
@granite_planet 2 роки тому
@@CharlesFreck What, how's weight supposed to be detrimental to racing?? The cars have more mechanical grip and downforce than ever and plenty of power to offset the weight. It's the size that's making racing difficult.
@BadDayLp
@BadDayLp 2 роки тому
@@granite_planet Agree. The amount of weight can be offset by sheer power and aerodynamics alike. And weight distribution was always part of the job. So nothing to bother here. The problem lays not within the weight. And who ever made fun of Indy for being heavy just dont understand how racing works. You can have exiting races with literal trucks, pick ups or even busses. My car weighs double the amount of todays F1 cars and is very raceable. NASCAR (which i dont watch cuz im a GP fan) clicks in on 1200kg and produces good racing. What "killed" open wheel racing (as he said) are not the safety features, but the advancements in aerodynamics that are so good and effective but at the same time detrimental for anyone following. We have become TOO good at aero, now we have to find a way to balance aero advantages and the production of dirty air.

I'm not Pirelli's biggest fan or anything, but the design brief they have to work with in F1 has been, often and rightfully, pointed to as a reason for the tires being so utterly useless. As much as I do respect Michelin's work with those seemingly indestructible "triple stint at Le Mans" LMP1 tires, I do actually trust the experienced hands at Pirelli to get the job done more than Michelin, who are skilled but would be nonetheless having to adapt to a whole new set of variables unlike most everything they had to deal with in endurance racing. It seems like the design brief is more reasonable this time, which means Pirelli have less of an excuse if this all goes tits up. If they turn out to be as bad at making tires as everyone (me included) has often made them out to be, then I'm sure the FIA and FOM won't hesitate to show them the door. Too much is riding on all of this.

@David Brown I wouldn't be so keen on michelin. One of their requirements for entering a few years ago was to move to all weather tyres like in formula E. So no more exciting wet races where drivers have to judge the moment to change to slicks they just keep driving forever. Multi stint tyres are fine in endurance racing because of the length of the race and how slower classes can change the race but that doesn't exist in f1 and will just lead to the processional races of the early 2000's where the cars are all running at quali pace and therefore just drive round in grid order doing the same strategy and overtaking in the pit lane.

Biggest concern with ground effect is that it is significantly more basic than the current aerodynamics systems deployed by teams, this could easily end up with the only major difference in cars being the engine and having one engine provider completely dominate. For example since the hybrid era began Mercedes have had significantly more power than any other engine manufacturer, however some teams such as Red Bull have managed to compete or get close to them by having a much better aero package, with the simpler aerodynamics that ground effect could bring, this would leave teams who don't have the best engine with very little ability to make up that performance deficit.

I'm afraid that the new changes will create bigger differences again as there are always teams who will find a trick that others didn't. The new budget rules will only make it worse since in the past the rest of the teams could copy during the season and become competitive again, that won't be as easy with the budget cap. We are finally equalizing from the hybrid drama leading to one team being way to overpowered and now there will be another great shake-up destroying the relative balance we reached over this season.

Honestly, designing tires to last only 20 laps was never a good idea. I understand the need to have sensational laptimes to excite the fans, but this is ridiculous. The other problem is the hybrid power systems. They are much too complex and don't mirror at all what the public has. F1 is in a quandary. They have super expensive cars that only a few well financed teams can field appropriately and the rest of the grid are simply cannon fodder.

Pirelli takes a bad rap bc of what people see as excess tire wear, and tire strategy/car dynamics as to tire wear, deciding outcomes. What people don’t realize is that’s INTENTIONAL. Pirelli could make tires that lost much longer but FIA wants them to wear to force pit stops and mix up the grid. My bigger gripe is that cost caps artificially slow the cars. I get the caps- smaller teams more competitive, bigger manufacturer teams (Merc) continuing to stay…but not as fun.

So hopefully Ross has found a compromise between technology and simplicity, to provide good close racing where there could be overtakes for the lead a few times a lap. I actually forgot how good racing could be until I started watching the Goodwood races, just epic! Hopefully the drivers will be able to push all out instead of just car and tire management.
