Based on the Tony Award-winning play that changed a generation, The Boys in the Band follows a group of nine gay men who gather for a birthday party in 1968 New York City - only to find the drinks and laughs interrupted when a visitor from the host’s past turns the evening upside down.
Starring Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesús, Brian Hutchison, Michael Benjamin Washington, and Tuc Watkins. Produced by Ryan Murphy. Directed by Joe Mantello. Based on the groundbreaking work of Mart Crowley.

To be fair, every Ryan Murphy project is a combo of every actor he's ever worked with. I'm not even sure he has casting directors. Probably just scrolls through his old end credits for talent lol. It's kind of great that he gets to work with folks he trusts on the screen and know they'll bring it.

airiness ai rhino The ending explains that the protagonist was everything he hated. In the party , he shows a lot of aggression because he’s in denial that he’s gay. He wished that he wasn’t gay and also wished he was strong like his friends to admit it. He allowed himself to be true around his friends but once they leave he goes back to what society expects of him . That’s why he goes to church at the end because he feels like a sinner

My big concern is that I hope everyone who will see this realizes from the outset that this is set in 1968 and that the characters broadly reflect the lives and attitudes of gay men pre-Stonewall, and that some of the dialogue and character interactions aren’t going to be politically correct from a contemporary lens - especially with how they treat the overly effeminate character, as well as the single black character. I can already hear people my age (I’m 26) crying about how this film “isn’t racially diverse enough” and, if they familiarize themselves with the original film or read the play prior to watching this, they might be a bit more understanding.

Looks like all the old-school stereotypes of gayness are represented, but not in a negative way. We have, for example, the 'Pushy Bossy Gay' (Jim), the 'Scary Witty Top' (Zachary), the 'Stud-Muffin' (Matt and Charlie, but mostly Matt), the 'Campy Funny Gay', and of course, the 'Closet-Case.'
