This trick isn't that difficult to pull off. What Michael did was have an assistant watch the painting closely, then they fill the room with semi-toxic sleeping gas. While the man is in a catatonic state, Michael sits down and replicates the painting, then closes it in the box. Then, after about a week, the man wakes up and feels like nothing happened.

I think his odd reveal actually worked well in this. It's certainly awkward, but I think it is the awkwardness of his reveal that allows us to see people's reactions when the reveal doesn't quite always click for people.

I have always shared your sentiment of the reveal portion being a bit awkward and sometimes even hard to watch. This is why I love the show, it is unpredictable and unorthodox which makes it fun to watch for someone like me who gets easily bored by the usual anticipated outcomes of TV. I know this type of delivery can come as a double edged sword because as exciting as it may be to some, it can also draw tons of people away by the mere fact that they simply aren't ready for this level of comedy
