Insurance companies are already refusing to insure against wildfires, so if you own a multi-million dollar house you're going to be willing to pay these freelancers to protect your house because it's an otherwise uninsured risk of losing your home.

As a previous firefighter/EMT, I understand where both sides are coming from. Seems like a very complicated issue. It's definitely not fixable with the professional firefighters knowing where the contractors are working and there's already too much going on to have meetings to ensure everyone's on the same page with regards to firefighting tactics being used on an individual fire. An initial meeting would be doable but the plans change by the hour and there's just not enough resources to KEEP everyone up to date with new plans. It's a mess. The real solution would be doubling or tripling the professional firefighters but that's not financially feasible either.

seeing the trillions our government is currently willing to dump on other causes whilst throwing pennies at helping the citizens of our own country. I don't think money is the problem. It's our government's own lack of care for the people who make up this nation. Sorry for crypto responding to this post but seeing where things are at this year it's a travesty how much our government is willing to pay hotshot's or other local agencies that work to fight wildland fires throughout this country.

@unvascorriendo There's some truth to this, but its mostly false. There are a few (Hollywood, Big Tech executives) that totally skirt any taxes. BUT most of the taxes burden in California is paid by the top 50% generally speaking. The real issue in my opinion is the total mismanagement of the California pension plan. State workers put money into it and the state totally screwed it up with their stupid side projects and what not.... its a travesty... and as usual the state politicians gas light everybody and blame rich people for it.

It's brutally underfunded for the problems they're facing. Honestly if the environment wasn't fucked we wouldn't have too many wildfires to deal with. Never forget - these private firefighters don't help the majority of people. They save the houses of the rich. These are the people who set the bed they're now uncomfortable sleeping in. These are people who are totally fine with the rest of the world burning down so long as their mansion doesn't get singed, and they don't mind setting up un-coordinated back-fires that could be the cause of someone else's house burning down in order to do so.

@@monsieurdorgat6864 Exactly this. Anyone who says otherwise probably don't actually live in California and haven't actually watched the events unfold over the years. The rich has been widening inequality in more ways than just wages. They purposely bus homeless from their cities into poorer neighborhoods, incentivize such things like AirBnB that allows for disproportionate homes and apartments (though illegal, still happens) being bought and used instead for tourism, and then cry about the implosion of homeless communities that can no longer be only contained in those poor neighborhoods. And always, they point the finger at the poor and say "you did this." Well, all I have to say is the best fine dining is eating the rich. Clearly, nothing else is working, and regulations hardly ever affect them.

CalFire is one best paid and funded fire orgs in the country, thats why the Federal Fire Service loses so many member to CalFire. ( Cal FireAir Program is one of the largest non-military air programs in the country) 2nd what does "manage water resource" mean? Do you mean balancing water demand of citizens and ensure that California world famous environment isn't damaged? 3rd I keep hearing this thing about "forest management?" like what does that mean? You know when the state of California, her counties, and cities can do controlled burns they do, right? The thing you must be talking about is the fact that Federal Government doesn't do control burns on Federal lands (where most these fires start) for number of reason ranging from economic, risk, to the logistical. And California has rule that those living near areas that have plan controlled burns (not on federal lands) can nix it. Like help me out here, what here is the "failure"

There were so many fires burning in August after 2 days of lightning storms that the local, state and federal wildland firefighters were stretched so thin that they couldn’t keep up. The homeowners who stayed behind and fought the fire themselves saved their homes, while most who evacuated lost theirs. This is especially true with the LNU Complex. My property was involved in LNU Complex and my family stayed behind and saved our buildings and our neighbors homes as well. There was no help at all from any firefighters, so we were on our own. Insurance giant AIG has been contracting private firefighters to protect upscale properties which are insured by AIG for about a decade. These contractors do pre-fire risk mitigation (fuel reductions and fuel modifications) and fire protection during a fire. They use the same equipment as regular firefighters from Stihl chainsaws to NFPA certified fire apparatus (usually Type 4 trucks). Many of the private firefighters come from agencies because they get paid more in the private sector. What needs to happen is a dialog on how to best integrate the private firefighters in the overall effort. When California has 14,000 official firefighters working fires, as was the case during 2020, resources are stretched extremely thin and any additional able-body is of great value. "but are they causing more problems than they're solving?", from the video looks like they're not. They kept the fire from destroying that vineyard, and if the state/local/federal governments aren't doing enough to protect peoples' livelihoods, then those people should be able to form a brigade, get a hose, hire contractors to fill that gap. Definitely seems like an issue for citizens to be setting back fires without it being okayed by the central group tackling the fire, but it looks like CalFire needs the help and should accept it and coordinate if it's there anyway. Then again maybe it's the right call to outlaw private fire fighting like this, so then the money behind it goes to improving public fire fighting and forest management. Also, pretty weak questioning of CalFire from Vice, nothing to the effect of "Would this land have burned if it weren't for the private fire fighters?" or any mention of how much forest management/controlled burns should be but aren't being adequately used to reduce these mega-fires. We're not going to solve this problem just by putting fires out.

Agree 100%, we don’t know the details of this specific fire and it’s consequences (eg was a controlled backfire out of control? Harm others/efforts?) however Calfire’s only argument is that they 100% have responsibility for all wild and controlled fires... even when they cannot manage that responsibility effectively, and lives and property are lost. If the private firefighters caused arson/damage (can we say CalFire never did???) then that could be a case. Fire and Guns in California... it seems only the government has the power/authority and responsibility to use them, yet none of the accountability when it goes wrong.

You said RPG attack, to engage targets with a 'little' bird, you'd be so low a RPG operater has a 50% chance of hitting it (Your so called 'little bird') and I doubt a company would put a pilot and 3 or 4 hundred grand in life insurance of human assets aboard (And who knows what they promised the operator what kind of company money they'll pay out, on contract upon their death. Also Mr. Contractor, if it was medical rescue? Did you know to pull one off, you need a cover aircraft with has gunship capabilities or the ground to be totally free of tangos??? It's not hollywood man. Escpecially if your bosses are writing the checks or don't want to write any more that cuts into their BOTTOM LINE. I also remembered @ that time, contractors bought used aircraft, not new, or leased New aircraft and a 500D costs about $400K at that time to buy used, or 55K a month to lease plus fuel and maintenance and pilot(s) at that high operating tempo in 03-09? , I doubt your bosses would risk a combat air support mission and lose several millions in personnel and equipment. You're bosses are making dollars not trying to lose them. Or have their insurance premiums jump up 20% a month because YOU SENT A AIR ASSET TO RESCUE US/COALITION PERSONNEL you can't talk too and lost a bird and 3 humans!!. Tell your story somewhere else Mr. Contractor. Your story makes a lot of sense in Call of Duty but not in any OIF combat situation... I did it too long for 'Big Army' for not to know what the 'grass is always greener' side of the combat arms for what they're business entails.. The six figure contractor who worked for peope who were about making money, not losing money... My very first battle buddy and good friend in the US Army is still contracting after retiring in 2011... So, I kind of know what I'm talking about Mr. Contractor.

@@notgunnadoit7461 I was in Iraq during that time. THERE IS NO WAY a private military contractor with helos would send their crews to medivac or support a US Military unit in distress. I was a combat medic then and you couldn't even communicate with the unit/element that needed medivac or support. How would you talk to them? Coordinate a LZ (Safe)? With smoke signals? With Mirrors? Cmon bro! How did you know they're in need of help/medivac? Fires? Their coms are encrypted? Only the "OGA" outside if US and NATO forces have those codes and communication equipment. Not state... OGA is another word for NSA, CIA, DIA, USAMI, USNMI, USMCMI, USAFMI etc, but the military MI wouldn't be a OGA , just setting an example. To add Im a medic, I know if I called for medivac with the help of a 25C, his coms could only be heard by US and our allied (NATO, if they had to codes) Forces.

This just goes back to the first firefighters in America; Ben Franklin formed the first public fire department in Philadelphia, forging a place among the private companies that would only save your house if your account were paid up. These are supplemental forces; they don't detract from the public firefighting agencies and can, with open communication, be folded into the overall plan by freeing up crews that would otherwise be needed for that clients property. Another fallacy stated is that they're all amateurs: Think of private military contractors : all the best-trained troops go for the private sector money after their public service. And this after a campaign to reduce or restructure inmate crews, which have been a mainstay of wildfire policy for decades. Fire agencies can be, in my experience, the most hide-bound conservative thinkers you'll ever know.

But for a person trying to save their home it's a last resort. He talks about how these businesses are out for...wait for it... "PROFIT" as if that's suppose to scare me or something. Does he apply that logic to his doctor? Can you imagine being in his shoes, out matched, under supplied, then looking at the private sector, and thinking to yourself "I wish they would outlaw it" as oppose to "how can we work with it".
