Two old acquaintances meet on Vauxhall Bridge on a damp and foggy night in November. For one of them, the encounter seems an eerie echo of a strange mystery surrounding his father, who was last seen on Vauxhall Bridge exactly 15 years earlier...

Bernard Capes (1854-1918) was born in London to a large family, one of eleven children (including an elder sister, Harriet Capes, who was a noted author of children's books). He began his writing career as a journalist and made countless contributions to popular magazines of the era, including the Illustrated London News, Pall Mall Magazine, The Idler, Cornhill Magazine, and Blackwood's. In 1889 he succeeded Clement Scott as editor of 'The Theatre', the leading magazine of the day for reviews and theatrical news, as well as sketches and stories.
In the course of his career Capes published more than forty volumes of fiction, including romances and mysteries, as well as poetry and historical novels. After giving up journalism to become a full time author, his work rate was prodigious: he typically produced three or four novels a year in his heyday in the late 1890s/early 1900s. Alongside his longer fiction, he also penned a great number of short stories for magazines and periodicals. He's probably best remembered today for his ghost stories, thanks in great part to Hugh Lamb, who rescued them from obscurity in the 1970s and included several of them in his anthologies. Capes died on 2 November 1918 at the age of 64, a victim of the global influenza pandemic which began that year.
'The Corner House' first appeared in a periodical entitled 'Short Stories' in November 1909, and was shortly after reprinted in The London Magazine (January 1910). It was subsequently published in book form as part of Capes's collection 'Bag and Baggage' in 1913.
A historical note: the "dynamiters" mentioned in this story may refer to the Fenian bombing campaign which took place in London between 1881 and 1885, led by Irish republicans fighting for an independent Irish state. This period saw a great number of dynamite attacks on targets such as London Bridge and government and military buildings, and led to the establishment of the secret police unit known as the Special Branch.

Sorry you're having difficulties, I had problems with the upload but it appears to be working now, according to other listeners. Sometimes it seems to take a while for the processing to finish. If it doesn't sort itself out in the next few hours, please let me know and I'll try reuploading

@@nobody8328 Honestly, I know several other channels that have this problem; I have also noticed myself that when I create a video and then upload it through UKposts on my phone, the audio can be heard immediately. When I try to upload it through my laptop, even though it says processing is completed, and it shows up to be viewed, it can take hours before the sound catches up. I have no idea why we all have this problem uploading videos, but it's almost across the board. It doesn't have anything to do with the type of content either, because I don't upload stories and neither do the other channels I'm talking about. It just seems to be some hangup in the UKposts studio where it may take anywhere from several minutes to several hours for the audio to load completely depending on how many minutes the video is and what you use to upload it.

@@waningmooncancer9628 your comment reminded me instantly of my mum, who also is a Bite-sized audio devotee, who, at all of her grandchildren's games and matches, stands throughout by choice so therefore always at the ready to jump up and down clapping at some winning play! She is 70 however looks a good 15 years younger, is fit and, well I guess youthful is the appropriate word but she's just.... herself, really. Last weekend someone asked her does it hurt her knees or her feet to jump up and down like that, how does she do it?? And her answer~which she had to think about for a second, was, "I guess I just don't know how NOT to do it" Which I think meant that if you start thinking you can't any longer do this or that so you just never do it again.... It's basically just becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. I can think of nothing that she does on a daily basis that she wasn't doing 5 10 30 years ago, she even packs the grocery shopping so that it's as heavy as possible, to keep herself challenged. I understand not everyone is going to be able to do that sort of thing but she also has a saying, "if you rest, you'll rust"!!

Great story. Your narration added immensely. So often, even with other excellent narrators, it’s common to not be able to discriminate one character’s voice from another. Never the case with you. Even though a member of the Psychical Society, the librarian exhibited an undue amount of cowardice, letting his friend enter the bombed-out building, not just alone, but without telling him what he saw and failing to answer questions being only interested in running away. Not an admirable fellow.

Thank you for acquainting me with two new unfamiliar - though amazingly prolific - authors, with this intriguing story, as ever, finely performed! I wonder how unusual such a 'real-estate situation' might be in late-Victorian London? But Bernard Capes must have known what he was doing. The mention of "dynamiters" reminds me of the astonishing More New Arabian Nights: The Dynamiter (1885) by R.L. and F. Stevenson.

Fantastic as ever, Mr Stanhope. You do realise that you’re the 4th emergency service, don’t you? Do consider recording “An Eddy on the Floor” by Bernard Capes. One of the weirdest ghost stories ever.

What a lovely comment, thank you! Yes, happy to say I already have 'An Eddy on the Floor' on my list, I hope to get around to it next year...
