Apparently, Gareth Edwards didn't want to start working on the VFX until they had the final frames and footage that they were actually going to use in the movie, so in the end, it didn't have to cost like $300M for it to look this beautiful. He had a clear vision of what he wanted to make and didn't waste people's time. We really need more of these. 😅

"Do we want more original movies? Then we should probably go see The Creator and support it." That's exactly why I went opening weekend. We dont get many films like this anymore. I always loved your reviews for providing more insight into the film making process/business to help put things into perspective.

one great visual aspect that this film doesn’t get enough credit for is that the vfx just blends into the environment perfectly. Robots, architectures, cyborgs etc don’t stick out as vfx but as real elements that support the movie. So many long shots of scenery and atmosphere of different cultures that helps me immerse in the world that the director built, a lot more than other robot movies. It weirdly feels relatable

You can also support original films by not going to see the lazy franchise films.

Also, fun fact! The movie was shot on a Sony FX3, a 4.000 dollar, super small, mirrorless camera. It also has very good light sensitivity allowing the crew to invest less in lighting in any scene. The way we shoot cinema is changing so rapidly right now!

PLEASANTLY surprised by The Creator; this is (in the most respectful way) an astonishingly solid B-Film. It'll be one of those hidden gems over the coming decades, and it absolutely will inspire the next generation of filmmakers.

I'd love a full review of this movie from you because (similarities aside) I thought it was riveting and so heartfelt. The chemistry between JDW and Madeleine Voyles was beautiful. The characterisation, across the board was fantastic. Allison Janney is a maaachine. Ken Watanabe, so endearing. I don't get emotional often in movies but this one really got me.

In interviews, Gareth said the original cut was 5+ hours! And then they cut it down to 2:30mins and then cut out another 15 mins. I would love to see a longer version as I felt some plot points were rushed along with character development. Still an amazing film!

The girl who played alphie stole the show for me. I wanted to jump through the screen and protect her myself. It’s insanely rare that a movie can make me tear up but god damn it she acted her ass off. This movie deserves so much more attention than it’s getting.

Chris, I saw The Creator yesterday with my GF and we loved it. It was not just that it was a very immersive and believable world that Edwards created. It also wasn't just the cast and the acting which was extremely tangible and emotionally driven. Or the Plot, which was intense and immersive. It was all of that and many more things. The young central actress, Madeleine Yuna Voyles, in her first film role was just perfect and it will be fun to see how she blossoms into her acting career. It was also the first time I noticed how much John David Washington sounds like his father and is definitely going to have an amazing career. The ending had us both tearing up. I also felt like there could have been more time added to the film, with certain scenes feeling like they'd been edited to allow for time constraints.

I pretty much agree 100% with you. Loved the movie, it did remind me of Chappie and elisyum. But regardless it was still really good. I think the story was very grounded and compelling, and that’s what really held everything else up. I’d love to see si-fi make a comeback. It’s probably my favorite genre

Saw The Creator yesterday. Not much of a Sci-Fi guy but gave it a shot. Really visually impressive and some good performances from Washington and Voyles.

I saw The Creator last night and I was pretty much expect a typical scifi movie about the danger of AI but I was pleasantly surprised, this movie has great visuals, good charactes, and best of all its got heart. One of the few movies Ive seen this year that I would go to theaters to watch again.

Plan to see it this week. Love Edwards and his approach to filmmaking. And I’m all for supporting original films and new ideas. Hollywood needs an overhaul and it seems the perfect time for that to happen. Great analysis, Chris!

Great review. My wife and I saw the creator. I'm personally a fan of these types of movies. And I always prefer the theater experience. I make judgements on movies I see in the theater, based on "could I have waited to stream this film?". This movie was definitely a go to the theater and watch on the big screen category. We watched it in regular 2d.. I wish we'd seen it in 3d or IMAX. I think there could have been a few more minutes of John David Washington's character engaging or struggling to engage in his world.

Kinda did feel like avatar with robots but was still class. Was never bored, visuals were insane and quite thought provoking. Would love to see an extended cut

Saw the movie on IMAX on 10/2 and loved it. It's beautiful and intense visually, emotionally, and audibly. The breadth and scale are immense and immersive. Sure, there were some "typical Hollywood" moments but even though I acknowledged them, they didn't have any negative effect on my enjoyment of the movie. And what an amazing last few seconds of the movie. The feeling of sadness, hope, and joy has stuck with me all week.

I almost passed on this one because there are other movies that seem so similar, but this was... wow. I was so impressed by the film footage exposition at the beginning. In less than 2 minutes it filled us in on how AI started, how things fell apart, and the state of the world we're stepping into. Such skillful storytelling that respects the intelligence of viewers.

This was sooo close to being phenomenal but some pacing issues and some of the character writing left me wishing it was tied together a bit better. That being said everything they did with the soundtrack, visuals and acting was incredible. As for the state of Hollywood I agree with you completely. Everything you said fell right in line with what I was thinking.

I saw this in a dolby cinema showing, I loved it! I would love to watch more like this. It reminds me of the best sci Fi original movies we adore to this day. Gareth killed it and it's rich and deep in all its aspects to be a good popcorn flick worth rewatching

I've gone from seeing on average 20 movies in theatres a year in the 80s and 90s to about 3 a year in the 2020s. Very little from Hollywood excites me enough to want to see it in a theatre.

I absolutely loved this movie. It's really a shame it only made $14 million on it's first weekend as I really feel like it's one of those movies that you only really get once every couple of years where you sit down to watch it and you know based on the cinematography and pacing that a studio didn't go in and force a whole bunch of changes. It has its flaws, but I enjoyed it enough that I'll probably see it again before it leaves theaters and I will definitely be picking it up on 4K UHD Blu-ray when it gets a home release.

Dude, your film reviews got me and my best friend enticed with film criticism, or rather looking at film through a critical, yet very much creative lense so much as teens, an I can't thank you enough for that! Just finished working on my friends debut feature a couple of days back and all I could think of at the wrap party was "This is what we've been dreaming of for 11 years, bro". I still can't believe it went through as beautifully as it did, given all the challenges and "impossible" situations we faced along the way. All I want to say is Thank you! One of my favourite film-making stories is from the making of Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit. It was made in partnership with DreamWorks and Jeffrey Katzenberg would speak to Nick Park, the creator of W&G, about how to make the film "better", e.g. by changing the little van into a sports car. Nick Park, who at that point had won an Oscar for each W&G feature, just ignored him to make Were-Rabbit a proper W&G story. Aardman stopped collaborating with DreamWorks after that 😂😂

This feels like a really good Netflix movie, and not in a negative sense. Netflix is often the home of hidden gems and that's what this movie is. I love how it mixes sci-fi with the Vietnam War and the concepts of "what is real" (although it'd be nice to dive a little deeper). It's impressive that the budget was $80M because film looks really good. The understated effects are a nice change from the usual over the top feel of Hollywood blockbusters. Gareth Edwards is easily my favorite new-ish director.

Great movie review! Just seen it last night, and I really enjoyed the movie on a number of levels, the story, acting, directing, and cinematography. I thought were all great. I remember when I first seen the trailer a month and a half ago and said oh yeah definitely checking this out! Yes as I watched it I definitely seen a lot of other movie inspired influences and I was ok with that. There isn’t a writer, director, actor, or movie studio that hasn’t been affected by another movie from the past. Yes originally is always the best way to go, but I’m interested in seeing where your inspiration comes from and how your vision will be impacted by it. I know everyone has gotten caught up in the camera and overall production of this movie, but it has to be more than that and I feel as though this movie achieved just that! Great job on all fronts and I only hope movie goers will be open to seeing a really good movie without any preconceived expectations. 🤙🏿

I enjoyed it! I felt the 3rd act was a bit rushed but the actress that played Alphie as well as John David Washington were fantastic. Its given me a new comedic punchline for everything "we don't have that in the fridge" haha which I loved. I did notice some of the other sci fi influences but it looked beautiful and had great actors. I'm glad they're putting out some original stories :)

I just watched it yesterday. I went with my dad and after it ended he said "I don't know how I feel about that" and I turned to him and pointed to my eyes which were filled with tears lmao safe to say I really enjoyed it lol. I had no idea abt the harsh reviews until a friend mentioned it to me after I expressed how much I liked it.

I think the movie was great, it’s kinda like The Golden Child meets District 9, and for the budget it’s refreshing to see a director create a master class at what can be done with less money. I got some crazy animatrix first renaissance vibes, and after seeing the creator, I’d love to see a matrix prequel of the first and second renaissance given this much love and attention by the same director. Stellar talent chosen for the movie, and the little girl absolutely knocked it out of the park, along with that shotgun blast to the heart at the end of the film which hurt worse than all my 40 hours worth of ink put together.

Just took my wife to see this last night. I was a little annoyed at first because I wanted to watch SAW X, but my wife didn’t want to so we watch the creator instead. I’m SO GLAD we chose to see that movie instead. Holy shit what an experience. Me and her were both crying by the end lol we sat there in silence after in ended and just took it all in. This film was visually stunning, acting was amazing, the story was good. It’s an original movie crossed between robots and the Vietnam war. It’s emotional and action packed. I support your take on new ideas and how they are treated. I'm reminded of Jupiter Ascending. It felt like most people were really dedicated to hating everything about that movie. It wasn't the greatest thing I've ever seen, but it WAS interesting. I totally wanted to know more about the world they established. It's commercial and critical failure was surely seen by studios as a message from the public. "If you give new ideas a chance, we will hate it." It's really too bad, because that wasn't even the studios "giving it a chance". They were actively seeking an original IP, and they got burned for it.

As many potholes as it had it was still one of my favorite films I've watched this year. This is why I go to theaters. To watch creative, and fun movies that make me feel something inside. I will definitely be watching this again and recommending it to friends.

Gonna see it this weekend, very excited from all the reception I’ve heard

I just came back from the film and there was only one other person in the film. Now this was at 5pm, the perfect time to get off work and watch a film. I was very disappointed that I only had one other guy to share an incredible film with. We got to spread the word on this movie because Chris, we'll get more films like this if we go and see them and spend money on them.

Just came out of the cinema. It was a great watch a Gareth Edwards continues to make breathtaking films. I did get memories of Rogue One and Godzilla both with the ending but also how he films large machines and monsters. Also gave me impressions of iRobot and Independence Day. There were some flaws in the execution and some inconsistency issues but overall I had a great time and would highly recommend it. These are the types of Action films I want to watch and not some other DC or Marvel film.

Just got done listening to a interview with Gareth Edwards from Collider and then one with Oren Soffer the movies cinematographer and this movie from a production standpoint should win an award of something because man it's maybe the smartest made movie of the year and that's going up against films like Barbie and Oppenheimer that have great productions.

I saw it last Thursday with my wife and we both cried. It was a powerful film and the effects made the experience that much more immersive. The Dolby Theater we saw it in was perfect! Audio was such a huge factor in the moment to moment action and added so much to the intensity! It was fantastic! I will definitely be buying this when I can!

There are some genuinely powerful and emotionally resonant images in this film. From the beautifully awe inspiring nuclear bomb blast/aftershocks to the simple but equally powerful and effective close up of a smiling childs face. I absolutely love the grainy celluloid-type textured visual look of this film, weathered, varying degrees of focus, imperfections and true realistic depth to the frame. For me it was a very refreshing middle finger to nearly every other blockbuster VFX movie that is prepackaged as this glossy, corporate commercial, with digital makeup covering everything. The Creator does struggle with some pacing and general storytelling issues, huge sections seem rushed through especially in the second half and I've noticed alot of people hung up on this. Basically what Chris Stuckmann is saying here, if more people will support original and unique cinematic storys and enough with the uninspired dull franchise bullshit, than studios MIGHT sense that there's a smart & nuance craving audience who is fed up with MOSTLY everything else in the blockbuster vfx market, not just (or) every comicbook movie, but for the most part we know which one's deserve attention and huge amounts of money and which ones will cause some stir or meaningless internet chatter but then be forgotten within a year or two. We get what we pay for, what we vote for with our time & money, putting the effort into going out to a theatrical experience and supporting the Cinema.

Just saw it tonight and it was way better than it looked in marketing. Chris is right, it looks a lot more expensive than it actually was to make!

Crazy thing is I never was a movie fanatic growing up so I personally haven’t seen Blade runner,district 9,ect. So I was able to watch the movie for what it was in all it originality and it was great amazing visuals and definitely a new favorite

I think the problem is that the movie dialect is run by people who regularly watch movies, which isn't the majority of the population that actually make up the box office, so you're only hearing from the people who are already helping funding these movies what they think the problem is versus what the actual problem is, and why executives are reluctant to make original films. So from an ordinary viewer's point of view, a guy who just keeps rewatching a small collection of movies and occasionally watches a handful of never before seen movies (not always a new movie) per year, these key components are the reason I believe movies as a whole are kinda dying lately: the inconvenience of paying for the theater, films becoming about the artists and not the audience, and the audience's lack of trust for filmmakers and studios. Prices for everything is going up, so how many people can realistically afford to pay the gas and tickets under an already tight budget? In cases like this, the cheaper alternative will always prevail such as waiting for the movie to come out digitally. Secondly, more and more do I hear artists lashing out at the audience for not liking their film, or that the selling point of a film is the artists involved/the originality of the film instead of the quality and entertainment of the film itself. From what I perceive when filmmakers these days talk about their films, it really seems to be more about the artist, or artists, and filling their desires in the film rather than filling the desires of the audience and what they would like to see. It doesn't seem like these complaints from filmmakers are about studios rejecting ideas that they think audiences would like to see, it instead seems like rejecting ideas that they solely believe is interesting to them. From a product manufacturing point of view, before a product is even made, market research is done to see what is there that people invest in, and what isn't there that people would like to invest in which is what begins the development of a new original product. Again, from what I perceive, it sounds like the filmmakers are making uneducated pitches about movies they believe to be interesting to someone like themselves rather then something they have seen a desire for in the audience that doesn't exist yet. Lastly, I don't believe the people trust filmmakers or studios anymore. The reason I keep rewatching movies instead of watching new movies are because I know what I'm trading in for my time (and sometimes money). With a new movie, there is a risk of a lot of time and money. As mentioned in this video, Barbie was a success, but that's because people knew what to expect with it in terms of themes, and the overall feminist message. But most of the time, these new movies advertise one thing to you, but when you watch the movie, it is completely different in terms of tone, messages, and what you generally expect. Overtime, I have trained my brain to raise red flags over the most general things in these movies' advertising campaigns, including what the artists say outside of the film since my second point outlines that these films are more about them now than the audience, and thus everything regarding their mindset and ideology will be felt in the film. So imagine paying a ticket only to not enjoy the film, maybe because it has a poor screenplay, messages you don't agree with, or a tone you didn't sign up for. It stings a lot more than missing out a movie based on your general red flags, which are then later confirmed by people who have seen it. Studios and filmmakers are getting wise to this sort of thinking, and so I do believe they play a bit of a deceitful game to not scare potential customers away, which to my point, isn't honest. I believe this is why a lot of originality is lacking from Hollywood films and why studios are more easily persuaded to make a film that is a product of other films or IP: because an original film has the baggage I explained in my main three points, but an un-original film has the baggage plus the selling point of familiarity which automatically makes it more appealing. If filmmakers and studios keep messing up these films that essentially have blueprints laid out for them, why would I have any confidence in their ability to make an original film with no prior blueprint good? My suggestion to filmmakers who want to make original films is to pay attention to what these other filmmakers who are allowed to make original films did in order to get to where they are (ironic since they always talk about a filmmakers past, but always chalk up their ability to make original films as luck or out of their ability.) Christopher Nolan, for example, knew WB was looking to make a Batman movie and knew what the audience wanted in terms of tone after the taste of Batman and Robin were still in audience's mouths, so he played the best of both worlds to make his vision come to life. The idea didn't come out of a vacuum of inspiration, it came out of legitimate business reasoning- something that I believe artists today are missing because they feel entitled.

Me and my wife watched it in imax in Waterloo London and Gareth Edwards’s cut a promo saying that actual imax was his local cinema for the longest time and watching it in imax it was glorious. I could write a list of films and anime that was directly comparable but no way. I loved it and I need more of this. You’re 100 percent correct we as the audience need to support more original IP’s I swear the majority of big budget franchises have looked so bad and this film looked and felt so much better than your latest DCU or MCU film of late.

In like middle school I learned about Gareth Edwards through his movie Monster, and I really liked his use of size and then when he was announced as the Godzilla Spearhead director when I was in high school I was blown away.

Chris you are spot on! Many people don't understand how studios invest in movies so I think you explained it very well.

It's so important that movies like The Creator continue to be financed and exist in the moviegoing marketplace, to break up the homogeny of what's out there. Granted, not being tied to an existing IP doesn't automatically guarantee that something will FEEL original, let alone be a good movie. It can be hard to market things that are technically original properties, but look like combinations of things we've seen before in a way that makes them seem novel. I wasn't super interested in seeing the film at first, but when I became aware of the radically unconventional way it was made, suddenly it became a must-see. It's just amazing that something this technically impressive can be made on such a modest budget. It sounds like the VFX process was also WAY more well thought-out than the average blockbuster. Whatever shortcomings it has narratively, the industry should be taking a big lesson from Edwards here

I saw this movie yesterday and it was FREAKING AMAZING!!! Sure I noticed the Star Wars influence a little but the Story, Visuals, and Characters hooked me all the way through and the ending got me emotional a little bit and I'm not even exaggerating. This film was great and shows that even with some influence of other things, you can still have a good story and Characters with AWESOME visuals that can hook people like me.

Why it only cost a fraction of the price: > The entire film was shot on a $4,000 Sony FX3 prosumer camera (which blows my mind) > VFX got the footage only AFTER the final cut of the film was complete which saves tons of money on unneeded/redone expensive VFX work > The entire production was run and gun, maybe 4 or 5 crew at a time, you can see tourists in the background on some shots > Almost the entire film was shot on location, very little sound stage/StageCraft work

Great video Chris! An apt analysis of the current state of Hollywood and the feature film business. The theater model is sadly changing drastically; as did the physical/traditional video rental market; and even more sad is the significantly lower 4K/Blu Ray/DVD (physical disc) sale market these days. These arthouse films going mainstream gives us filmbufs hope but also a bit of display given how much things have changed now that we’re in 2024. I hope that physical media sees market growth somehow maybe via bundled sales with exclusive steelcovers that have bonuses like mini-posters (higher quality screenprints for example or fine glicee prints/lithographs), behind the scenes booklets, display props, or even collectible statues, etc. to get more people to buy traditional again. Or maybe more artful skip/case covers by talented artists could entice fans to collect again like vinyl saw the resurgence of the mid to late 2010’s through now. We must not let traditional/physical/tangible media slip away lest we may lose some original versions of films forever due to Hollywood write offs and future risk of abused daft censorship/politically motivated cancellations… Also, we cannot put our sole trust in the studios and distributors as they have already proven themselves untrustworthy, especially recently. It turns out private “ownership” of digital versions of a given film isn’t at all like the same kind of ownership as physical media since digital copies can disappear and be totally erased as the platforms lose the license or go under in the long term. Let’s continue to purchase the physical media for our beloved films - old and new! ❤️🖤🙂🙏🙏

I think this also goes hand-in-hand with the move to streaming platforms. A lot of people just don't go to theaters anymore because they can just wait for the movie to show up on Netflix or Disney+ or Amazon Prime. And so movies that could have been blockbusters for theaters just don't get the numbers that they need to make studios money.

I think the main reason for the 80 Million budget was very good planning. I have a feeling Gareth Edwards is a student of old school film making. What I am saying is you have the whole thing planned out and agreed before you even start visuals. That's smart!!

This was one of the best movies that I have seen in years. Emotionally riveting and with technological ideology that causes you to think about the future.

I saw this on Friday and I really liked it. It definitely did feel a bit rushed in some parts and I think it could have easily been another 20-30 minutes without feeling like a drag. Some movies are better if they tie everything up quickly and others are better if stretched out and allow the story to breathe. It was still very entertaining and it's visually GORGEOUS. The sound design was also damn good as well whether it was 'Nomad' warming up or the pitter patter of little robot feet. This movie looked like a $200M budget movie. I was a bit hesitant on seeing it at first because I don't think the marketing really did much for it, but it exceeded my expectations. I hope there are more movies like this in the future because it was rather refreshing.

I saw it on opening night and it was great. To be honest I already anticipated how "tropy" it would turn out to be but I still wanted to give Gareth the support he deserves. Aside from the story elements, the pacing is also not the strongest with this one (I adored his pacing in Godzilla, a slow burn paired with well crafted set pieces). But the visuals and sound design is well worth my money. I haven't had a spine chilling moment in the cinema for a long time but Gareth gifted me one with a scene featuring a certain song...I could feel my organs syncopating with what I was looking at and was utterly impressed.

Had high expectations for this movie. But about 2/3rds of the way into the movie, it seemed to not care if certain things made sense anymore. 😞

Chris, your take on movies is appreciated. Most critics think their job is to cricize a movie. No, it is to CRITIQUE a movie. As far as originality, how many westerns, have, have horses, black hats, white hats, and bank robberies in them. So many similarities. But I love a lot of them. It's what you do with the characters, that is what's important.

Saw it with my friend in IMAX just yesterday and we both really liked it! The middle sorta dragged a bit but the first and 3rd acts were really captivating and the score was fantastic. The VFX were also some of the most realistic I've seen in a while
