Ive never seen a player play better than Nadal did at Roland Garros 2017. That was out of this world! But this is definitely the best I’ve seen Roger play. He was too good for Rafa that night.

H2H Rafa usually always had the upper hand against Fed except on the very fastest surface (grass), because he could better exploit the forehand to backhand exchanges; Fed could seldom generate enough pace and/or unpredictability to worry Nadal on the backhand side, while Nadal's backhand could be deceivingly flat and effective. This was a night Nadal would normally have won; the difference was Fed's improved, versatile, powerful, Wawrinka-like backhand. If Fed had made this backhand adjustment early in his career, there wouldn't be a big-3, just a big-1.

@@Nkosinati HOnestly though, the surface in AO 2017 was a bit faster than the last few years and whenever you give Fed a fast surface, he is tough to beat. Yes he was also playing exceptionally well in that period but the court was fast which really helps his game. On fast courts, a Prime Federer will almost always beat Nadal and Djoker.

Rafa played great...thought he would pull it off. Down a break in the fifth? Feds never EVER done that vs Rafa. The MAIN difference is Fed HAS lost on a GOOD BACKHAND DAY.....but Never to Rafa,,,,,it was AAAAALWAYS the reason Fed lost to Rafa. Two HOURS of even the SIMPLEST ROUTINE BACKHANDS.......all having to be hit from OVER ones shoulder......would DEFEAT anyone..........it's a simple club tactic....but it's the ONLY reason Rafa ever beat Fed. i couldn't agree more.he seriously needs a sports psychologist.because when he is at his absolute best,i don't think anyone in the world can stop him.even djokovic(who has been at the receiving end of some ass whoopings by fed early on in his career) has admitted that if fed plays at his best,he wouldn't be able to stop him.that's because perfect attack always gets the better of perfect defense in tennis imo.and in the modern age,nobody embodies attacking tennis more than roger.but his weak mindset has been his kryptonite for most of his career.even the brilliant backhand we see here is because of a pressure -free mindset. but after ao 2018 he seems to back to his old nervous self. as a die-hard fan i just hope we get to see him in this kind of form a couple of more times in a few more future slams.but his present form makes chances of that happening low.:(

Dr. Mr. Person Guy what are you even talking about saying young and old?this was not 2006 or 2007,this was last year.and to be honest,physically he says he feels much better than he did last year.this is 100% a mental problem.and he's had this pretty much all his career...struggles early on in his career against nadal and later Vs Novak were all because of his mental fragility.on the occasions when he was able to overcome those fragilities,he was truly an unstoppable player.thats why I think he needs a sports psychologist to guide him to 2 or 3 more slams before he finally rides off into that sunset.

It's possible he's finally starting to age, maybe but I doubt it would come on quite so fast. Is it possible he has a small injury or illness or that he has maybe just lost a little fitness? Possibly. That would be my guess because it's definitely not desire or focus. So I don't see what's so wrong about someone saying it looks like there is something wrong with him, Because it very much does look like he's not quite right. But if there is let's hope it gets resolved soon, because even though he is not playing terrible that small drop is more than enough for me to say I think he won't win any more slams playing like this with Novak and Nadal playing so well. I'm not saying he won't win another slam, but I am saying there is zero chance of him winning another slam ever unless he can get back to the form he has showed for just about a year between oz 17 and oz 18. People need to realize it's not a few weeks or a month or two of below par performances it's 8 solid months. A few sporadic matches here and there apart from that, he really hasn't been good at all, since oz 18.

Federer had very poor tactics against Nadal in the earlier years, it wasn't just a matter of Rafa's forehand killing the one handed back hand. For example Nadal would serve 80% of the time to Roger's backhand and Roger still did not commit enough space to it. Every time he approached the net he got smoked. Roger has bageled Rafa on clay before so it's not like Rafa is unbeatable without the right strategy

​@@JL-fh4qwit's not about strategy, it's about the matchup, it didn't favor Federer in those slow courts and his playing style is to attack and finish the point as quickly as possible, Nadal was a beast defender and he moved very well and his topspin didn't allow Federer to play his game especially with that smaller racquet that he had. the only mistake Federer did I think is that he should've changed his racquet way earlier and maybe take some breaks to come back fresh.

That's what Novak always thought 😂 Could always be relied on in the finals and slams when it counted!
