The E60 BMW M5 is an amazing car -- but it's horribly unreliable. Today I'm reviewing a 2008 M5 with a 6-speed manual to show you why the E60 M5 is so cool -- and also why you shouldn't get one. I'm showing you all the key quirks and features of the BMW M5, and the most interesting things about the 2008 BMW M5.

Just did rod bearings on an 08 m5 with 140k miles and let me tell you the previous owner was persistent on letting the car warm up before beating on it and that makes all the difference. They had a ton of life left on them. Key to this cars longevity is letting it warm up before play time. It’s 10w60 which is syrup when cold.
@MikeyPraz2121
@MikeyPraz2121 2 роки тому
Great comment. I have a manual 07 with 85k miles. It seems the warm up period is the difference. Mine apparently had a rebuild at 37k miles due to the bearings. New oil every 3k miles and proper warm up should make the difference.
@matthewnicholas6365
@matthewnicholas6365 2 роки тому
The problem with BMW M cars with high revving normally aspirated engines is that they were bought on finance and ragged to death from cold then given back. Finding one that's been looked after is rare because so few of them were bought to be owned long term. They all seem to have 50-150k miles now. Find an exotic car like an period Ferarri and most of them are barely broken in.

Totally agree, I do the same, 10 miles warm up and then gradually crank it up, same with the cool down, last 5 miles let it glide and take it easy. My SMG pump failed, probably the electric part, can't wait to get it back in the road.
@matthewnicholas6365
@matthewnicholas6365 2 роки тому
Also doesn't help that BMW decided to link the warm up lights to the coolant temp, which is boiling in about 2 minutes, whereas the 10w60 oil takes about an hour 🤣

EVERY car has its issues and I have a list of them for the aforementioned cars. It's funny though, I am not sure how someone would equate a 507hp, 383ft lbs, 8250RPM redline, and 205mph top speed car with being reliable? If you want a sporty reliable car, get a Honda Accord GT. If you want an amazing one-of-a-kind vehicle, you have to be realistic about what you are getting into and be ready to maintain it.

I used to own one of these back in 2008... amazing car. Respect. Yes I suffered some issues... but reason for me to change car was: I) how uncomfortable the car was; and, II) Range... not cost of fuel, range... if you wanted to go somehow quick, real range of the car was below 300 km, which means that every 200 km you had the low fuel warning again, making a 600 - 700 km trip a gas station tour. If you built a car that consumes so much gas, you should have a 100 liter tank (at least).

I bought a 2007 M5 around 2010 or 2011 and had it for a few years. Didn't have any major issues with it during that time and about 20k miles but I did have to replace the battery and a few of the SMG relays. Did a ECU upgrade that claimed around 540hp on 93 octane and that thing kicked like a mule. Also reprogrammed the SMG computer with the Euro software that gave the car back real launch control and made the transmission work as designed (launch control in US spec M5's just dumps the clutch and is really burnout mode ... Euro software has both depending on how quickly you put your foot on the gas pedal when you activate it). Oddly enough the most common issue that causes the dash to light up (same on the normal E60 5-series) is the steering wheel position sensor. Relatively easy to fix but this one sensor takes out cruise control, traction control, M mode, hill assist and a few other systems. Mine came with it broken when I bought it but it was replaced for free by the dealership and then all was fine until one day the car wouldn't go into gear (that was a dangerous week driving the V10 beast without any nannies!). Some troubleshooting and a $25 relay later and all was good again. Luckily it wasn't my commuter car but I did get rid of it while things were good and I was aware of the potential for engine bearing, VANOS and SMG issues. Also got to learn BMW ISTA-D and ISTA-P quite well when I owned that car :) I would love to own one again but yeah they aren't for the uninformed that doesn't recognize their potential for issues.

A really useful video, full detailed and professionally explained, as a BMW fan i hardly agree that BMW V engineering according to some old models needs a huge improvement specially when it comes to the rod bearings issue that’s been a public or a common issue for almost every BMW v engine, thanks mr Demuro for the good work on each video you post. and for anyone who wants to buy a BMW is to stick to the 5series BUT with an 6inline engine just like the b58 which has enough power and we don’t need to take races on the road!

The performance was precise and surprisingly quick. Still, none of that matters if you can't depend on it starting when you want to enjoy it. I'm convinced that only hardcore DIYers or full time mechanics with an empty garage waiting should go anywhere near these brittle bricks. @peterroberts652

The rod bearing issue is what happens when you give a car with a racing engine to plebs to drive . In order to have a motor like this rev as high as it does , you have to run tight bearing tolerances . They also run a fairly heavy weight oil so that when up to temp the oil can protect the engine correctly. So if the car isn't warmed up very gently, watching the oil temperature and not gunning it AT ALL until up to full temp , you will damage the bearings If the oil is not thin enough to flow through the bearing , ut cannot protect the bearing. Most normal car drivers just wouldn't understand this at all .

@peterroberts652 Рік тому
@Matthew Nicholas I work on old aircooled Volkswagens and build larger aircooled performance engines for them , 2.3 litre 200 hp sort of motors as well as 2 litre ish ones for campers . They all have bigger sump extensions , full flow oiling and external oil coolers and henceforth hold about 7 to 8 litres of oil in total . I have Autometer gauges in them and the oil takes a fairly long time to get up to temperature. I make it a rule of thumb to not give them any more than gentle driving till past 150 deg Fahrenheit and no full throttle till at 180

Once the warranty expired I purchased another E46M3. The M5I was like dating a super model. I got lots of attention & people wanted to race me. It was black on black But I truly enjoyed the E46m3 more. My first 2 we’re really reliable as a Toyota & were a blast to drive. I still have my E46 convertible. I love the top down with the wind breaker screen. Must have that & it’s so much fun especially living in Orange County California. I still miss the E60 sometimes. Think of the E60 as a 4dr supercar. As an ex owner of a 2006 M6 (essentially the same car in coupe version) I have to agree fully with Doug’s review of the M5. Loved driving it...when it actually worked. I had the proverbial love hate relationship with it. I’ve moved on to a 911 which stirs my soul even more.

The cupholders are also in the E90, they were deliberately placed in front of the air-vents so you can regulate the temperature of the cup. pretty cool design.

I had a client bring a 08 m5 into my shop a few months ago with the rod bearing issues. after my techs and advisors crunched the cost numbers the guy literally broke down in tears, i felt so sorry for him, the motor locking up caused other issues to various parts on the drivetrain and he couldn't do it.
@mattmartini836
@mattmartini836 3 роки тому
Yeah. The problem is that average people are buying these so cheap thinking they’ve grabbed a bargain but it’s technically an entry level supercar with the v10 in it. You’re going to pay Ferrari level maintenance and costs on it. Simple as that. Not mention parts are now scarce for these so owners will get bent over every way they go.

@@mattmartini836 Especially with Euro cars, not to get stereotypical but if you buy a high performance german car its well know the repair an macitence tags are going to be expensive. But the driving experience is unlike another.

K D absolutely, I have an 07 335i coupe with the twin turbo six, and coming from a Subaru WRX to this, The extra maintenance and costs these things carry is real! And mines not even an M. I didn’t believe until you actually own one and have replaced half the engine in 5 years of ownership. But like you said, the higher maintenance costs are worth it. The car is worlds above my old WRX in every way, but I feel when you go to an M model, it’s another level above in terms of cost and maintenance.
