If the world is to meet its end, we can only hope it will be as stunning as the sci-fi film The Midnight Sky. George Clooney’s ambitious movie shifts regularly between the Arctic and space, which gives way to breathtaking cinematography and raw human moments.
In Clooney’s version of doomsday, the world is ending because of poisoned radiation taking over the atmosphere and killing millions of the earth's populace. The last hope remains in a space mission that is coming back from a moon of Jupiter.
The star-studded cast gives extra weight to an already compelling story, but if you are still scratching your head about The Midnight Sky's ending, here’s a detailed explanation to set you straight.

It was so good and the ending got me so shook...... i didnt care about why the earth got destroyed it leaves you to your own imagination.... it had a very peaceful ending and i felt satisfied with everthing. The Midnight sky is what we indians call an art movie. I know it doesn't make sense but Basically for us an Art movie is a movie which is realistic and does not have musical songs , irritating comedy and that kind of random stuff which most Indian movies normally have Some movies show reality as it is. The way we see the world from that perspective , that way a movie is shown to us . I really like this movie, do all space movies need to be action packed?? It breaks my heart to see that this master piece did so badly in cinema . I suppose Americans like High school musical and John Wick kind of movies. 😒

It was a very good movie. SPOILER next! However I believe I know who the little girl really was, and I don’t think he was hallucinating. Maybe you’d agree. Remember toward the end when he was looking for the little girl in the snowstorm, he saw the image of his former beloved girlfriend as if it was a ghost, then suddenly, it was the little girl he was looking for. Then it became obvious as to who the girl really was. I believe that his deceased former girlfriend came back as the image of their little child in order to give him more comfort during his last days alive and alone, with him thinking that a little child was left behind. If the girlfriend came back as herself, it may have upset him, and brought back the reality of his past and the pain of leaving her and their child, that he never met when the last saw each other. And toward the end, talking on the sat radio to the woman on the spaceship, he eventually realized it was his actual daughter that he was speaking to for the first time, and so he finally found peace, one in finally talking to her, and two, realizing how much his girlfriend loved him that she came back to be with him as their daughter and let him spend the time that he missed out with her as she appeared as a child, with the same mannerisms. It was a good ending and storyline.

@@Thedrlipa Clooney didn't want to explain the reason for why the earth was uninhabitable OBVIOUSLY. The story wasn't about why the earth was destroyed. The story focuses on FAMILY and its importance to the father not about the disaster. This isnt "contagion" or WWZ. It's a story about the father and daughter relationship. What happened to Earth? Where did the others humans go that left the planet? Why didn't they go to K23? Why didn't the ships radar pick up space debris until it was being hit? How can a human survive in the Artic after falling into water in zero degrees weather? 2 humans can't repopulate the human race.
@Rekcoj
@Rekcoj 3 роки тому
the answers are almost all in the movie thought. 1. radiation levels are rising and i think i saw temperature rising rapidly aswell. my guess, the atmosphere is degrading rapidly. 2. noone left the earth. the scientists at the beginnig were just being flown out from the arctic research facility to "their homes". no contact to the colony ship also implies that what ever happend on earth, happend too suddenly. 3. i don't know the radar reflection properties of ice, but it looked like it was relativly small. 4. that's where i lost alot of interest, that was extremely unrealistic imho. 5. obviously.

Her name is Iris Sullivan, people call her Sully in the movie. The little girl is a figment of his imagination, essentially a manifestation of his guilt, a coping mechanism. This approach has been used before, but basically in the end the point was he felt guilty that he neglected a daughter for work that never concluded to go anywhere, but when older Iris mentions her mother was Jean Sullivan, he realized she's his daughter he never bothered meeting, and that by complete accident, he was her role model and in a way was always there for her, just like he was there to inform the crew about the problem and give them a plan. The thing with this movie, the focus was really just Clooney's redemption story, everything else wasn't really concluded so therefore ppl will continue to pick this movie apart, but I honestly just enjoyed his character arc, and the space scenes were really well done.

Will be great if some survivals found the Polar station and safe Augustine so he can go to the K23 and reconnect with his daughter. That would be a great plot !! Also reestablish connection with the other space ships. Show the life in underground bunkers on Earth. Explanation what exactly happened to the Earth ? Was it us or AI ? Also, did that desperate mom find her child or not? 2) What the hell happened to the Earth? The movie builds up tension around the fact, and, in the end, we don't even know what happened to the people we saw in the beginning. Are they dead? Where did they go? It's not a bad movie. The visuals are outstanding, and the actors are good. But it ended with many remaining questions for me.

The mysterious ilness could've been a lot of things, but it probably involved kidney failure in the latest stages. What happened to Earth? Most likely a failed EMP-technology based test that resulted in the detonation of all nukes in the blast radius. That's why he said, it happened with an accident and they knew it was dangerous. What about underground situation? As temperatures and radiation levels are rising, being underground even in a cave with protective layers won't last long before this poisonous energy penetrates and or oxygen (or water to make oxygen) runs out. Why did Augustine killed the man? Probably to save that man from a painfull death from radiation sickness. There was nothing else he could do, and when he wispered he probably made this request for a quick and peacefull death instead of the pure agony of cellular degration.

How in the hell did they make it that far? The plot devices did not match reap science. Also a haman swimming in the Arctic l and survive. That's some weird science 😂😂

Wasn't it clear from the movie? Same kid in the back of the car at the end. And clearly the estranged relationship they had meant the mother didn't want her daughter to know anything about the dad that only cared for his work and nothing else. There was also the scene in the sinking habitat - the only words she ever spoke was asking if he loved his wife, and we didn't hear the answer. So we can assume that is also unanswered from his perspective as well. Even he doesn't know.

It was his mind feeling guilty about isolating himself with his work and alienating from his wife and daughter. The little girl is how he remembers his daughter years ago, the woman on the ship is the real her, his daughter, which he alienated. Now he knows humanity will continue on K23 with his daughter to repopulate. He was also the inspiration for her to become an astronaut, when he brought a moonrock to her mother when she was little. Back then she probably didn't knew he was her father, as they were already alienated, but by the time they speak in the final scenes, they both know and aknowledge their relationship. It ends in him crying, relieved that he was able to speak to her and she basically forgave him for his abscense by mentioning he inspired her as a little girl when he brought his mother and her a moonrock back when she was that little girl and also telling him she is happy they could finally talk. Offcourse they both knew that this conversation was the last time they could ever talk to each other so they wouldn't waste it with regrets or grudges. He cries and probably dies because now he can let go of his terminal life with some peace of mind, having heard his daughter one final time and knowing humanity will life on through her.

I think people are disliking the movie largely because to fully appreciate the story, the viewer must think it through. (Such viewers are accustomed to everything being fully explained and wrapped in a nice package.) The first leap for me was deciding that little Iris was imaginary-to some degree anyway. Did Augustine really traverse hundreds of miles of the arctic on his own? I am still wondering about this aspect, but I am happy to do so. The drugs went down with the skimobile, so how much more time did he have? (After firsthand experience my wife's succumbing to cancer, I think he probably did have weeks or more.) Etc.

I really hate to be that guy, but this Movie was one of the most frustratingly annoying movies I have seen since Gravity. I can accept that they might overlook the more scientific inaccuracies such as living on a moon in Jupiter's orbit would be deadly due to the radiation Jupiter emits, but it was the more obvious ones that I found extraordinary.. First off, 24 hour Night and Day cycle in the arctic?? CMON.. its either night for 6 months or day for 6 months.. Secondly, there is NO WAY ANYONE can survive a 1 minute dip in polar water and then survive in the polar wind, even if he had a change of warm clothes! (which he didnt) Thirdly, instantaneous communication between Earth and the space craft. Even sending a message to the moon there is a delay of 2.5 seconds.. Then finally, so when the "event" occurred, no one at NASA decided to send out a message to the ship.. They all just packed up their stuff and said screw em and left.. I really dont think so.. This movie could have been so much better if they had taken the time to make a story that makes sense.. all these mistakes just simply were not necessary..
