We have signed hundreds of bilateral agreements with the EU and we pay into EU funds and we transform (i.e. copy) thousands of articles of EU law into Swiss law in order to comply and be able to continue trading with the EU. Actually Switzerland had an active request to join until a few years ago. It was sent in the early 1990s and then frozen when we tried to figure out how to profit from the EU development without having to join. That process resulted in the bilateral agreements, which we have signed hundreds of by now. However this special treatment is coming to an end, as the EU are getting tired of having to deal with the special kid in the middle. In the long run only full membership is reasonable. We are paying, we are adhering to EU laws and programs, but we have no representation in Brussels. Not exactly smart.

The channel just simplified everything and didn't go too much in detail because then the video would be too long and maybe contain too much info for people who don't know a lot about the EU to retain. This is history of the EU so an overview of all countries. If it was a history of UK in the EU, they might would add more details.

@@pandaonsteroids5154 your first point is a lie! the French didn't want the UK to prosper from the closer ties, France and Britain are historical Enemies and France still resents the UK for the loss of its colonies in North America. apparently bankrupting and expending millions of British lives in 2 world wars on french soil plus hosting the French government in London during ww2 was not enough for France to extend the arm of brotherhood to the UK. this is the reason the UK left the EU .. France had control over the UK in ways which was never intended nor accepted. we were treated badly and used as a piggy bank for your New Empire. many will follow us out the door. its sad it had to come to this but the EEC we joined no longer exists.

@@thetechoasis2179 Erm, no you are wrong. Only after the British tried to establish EFTA and failed miserably they wanted to sneak into the ECSC to suck on EUropes blood and try to sabotage France and Germany whenever possible.

BENELUX history isn't really a part of the direct history of the EU since it is not open to all European countries (only Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg can be part of the BENELUX). BENELUX countries have been great promoters of European integration though.
