The Fall is our biggest song production yet. First ever shredding keyboard solo! Distorted guitar, etc!
Some inspirations within this sound - Lower Brinstar from Super Metroid, King K. Rool final battle, Donkey Kong Country (David Wise!)!
What is this song's meaning? It can be interpreted many ways and I've included some different takes!
Josiah: being more afraid of the transition to the afterlife or how it comes about, instead of the afterlife itself.
Michelle: I see it being about learning something new about something you strongly believed before - a veil being lifted - and not being able to unsee the new truth. Questioning or losing faith in something.
Our friend Hartwolf's interpretation: "Imagine if we grew wings upon reaching adulthood, and one person just didn't for whatever reason, and then get told, "You just need to try harder to grow them. My interpretation may have used metaphorical imagery, but it's more or less expressing these sentiments. Particularly from the perspective of being neurodivergent in a world not set up to support that effectively."
freshpogs aka poggies says: "The Fall reminds me of a fall from grace, where you thought you were doing well and meeting your own, others’ and society’s expectations, but at some point, as life gets more complicated and you have figure out how to stand on your own, you become overwhelmed with life’s increasing demands and become terrified of failure. On a personal level, it reminds me of “gifted kid burnout” where you are praised as a child for academic success and told that’s all that really matters, but then when you grow up, you realize that isn’t enough and feel like you weren’t prepared for reality and are not set up for success like you always thought you were. The societal pressure to always be on top can never be met, and you feel that you are falling behind in life and are just never enough."
Hazel: "To me it sounds like believing a lie/delusion and realizing the truth. The last verse offers a glimmer of hope but still feels like it lingers in that mourning stage, so I'd say it offers hope for the future? Like "I feel bad, and I know I'll feel bad for a bit, but ultimately I know things would get better".
Maurica: "To elaborate on poggies' take - like when you're a "gifted" child and always told you're doing great and held to high expectations. Then you enter the real world and realize you weren't actually prepared for it and feel like you're failing because there's so much you don't understand. Suddenly there's no more praise, only being scolded. And you can't figure out why there was this sudden shift. You can't find the ground because everything you were taught isn't applicable now."
Shark: "In my view, The Fall is about the mental consequences of a life-altering event or revelation. Something that happens or changes in such a way that you will never be able to view the world in the same way again. This event is the catalyst of anxiety and paranoia about the ever-changing nature of the world, and a constant obsession over everything that could possibly go wrong; so much that you miss out on all the good in life. It's a vicious cycle and a self-fulfilling prophecy. If death is an inevitability, then life is an illusion."
Thanks to our friends for telling us your takes on this song's meaning. I love to hear people's interpretations. It's so awesome. let me know yours!!
Lyrics (Josiah Everhart)
I thought I was floating
But the ground’s getting closer
The sky is my walkway
But the floor is collapsing
Don’t let me fall
It’s not quite my time
The fall is all
The fall is all
I’m afraid of
You said I was lucky
That I’d swim through the clouds
So where are my wings now
And why aren’t you proud?
Don’t let me fall
It’s not quite my time
The fall is all
The fall is all
I’m afraid of
I’ve come to realize
That my legs are still working
But how can I stand up
When the floor is an illusion
