The Chieftains and Sinéad O’Connor perform ‘The Foggy Dew’ at the IRMA Awards.
The 10th Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) Awards take place in the Burlington Hotel, Dublin. The hosts for the event are broadcaster Ray D’Arcy and musician Eleanor McEvoy. During the ceremony, film director Neil Jordan presents Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains with the Special Industry Award in recognition of the group’s contribution to Irish traditional music since the 1960s.
The Chieftains then perform a version of ‘The Foggy Dew’ with singer Sinéád O’Connor. The band members are Derek Bell (harp), Matt Molloy (flute), Paddy Moloney (tin whistle and uilleann pipes), Seán Keane (fiddle) and Martin Fay (fiddle) and Kevin Conneff (bodhrán).
‘The Foggy Dew’ is included on The Chieftains 1995 album ‘The Long Black Veil’. As well as featuring Sinéad O’Connor, it also includes guest appearances from musicians such as The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Marianne Faithfull and Tom Jones.
The lyrics to ‘The Foggy Dew’ were written by a Belfast curate Father Charles O’Neill. The ballad praises the Irishmen who fought for Irish independence in the Easter Rising of 1916, rather than fighting for the British Empire in World War 1.
Highlights from the IRMA Awards were broadcast on Network 2 and 2FM on 1 April 1995.

Her son's death (last year) was obviously too much for her to cope with . I've suffered two Familly bereavements in the past 21 months , and it is difficult . I think time eases such pain , though , and its important to remember that . R.I.P to an Irish favourite from a time when we could produce musicians who had soul, talent and character.

My God. A song that’s been sung a thousand times by a thousand singers(many quite well), but after hearing Sinead put HER stamp on it, accompanied by the Chieftains, I don’t think that I ever care to hear another artist even attempt it. n fact, one of Ireland's most enduring anthems was written by Fr Charles O'Neill and the blind musician Carl Gilbert Hardebeck. Born on 20 September 1887 in Portglenone, Co. Antrim, Charles O'Neill attended his local primary school before furthering his education at St Malachy's College, Belfast. (Google) But she sang it beautifully - a magnificent poem, the words to which match the depth of her talent and soul.

As down the glen one Easter morn To a city fair rode I There armed lines of marching men In squadrons passed me by No pipe did hum No battle drum did sound its loud tattoo But the Angelus Bells o'er the Liffey swells Rang out in the foggy dew Right proudly high in Dublin town Hung they out a flag of war 'Twas better to die 'neath that Irish sky Than at Sulva or Sud-El-Bar And from the plains of Royal Meath Strong men came hurrying through While Brittania's Huns with their long range guns Sailed in through the foggy dew Their bravest fell and the requiem bell Rang mournfully and clear For those who died that Eastertide in the Springing of the year While the world did gaze with deep amaze At those fearless men but few Who bore the fight that freedom's light Might shine through the foggy dew And back through the glen, I rode again And my heart with grief was sore For I parted then with valiant men Whom I never shall see n'more But to and fro in my dreams I go And I kneel and pray for you For slavery fled, O glorious dead When you fell in the foggy dew

So they sent smaller contingent later. Napoleon on his deadbad said that he would be better if he invaded Ireland with full force and not Egypt. And that is how Sinn Fein came to be.
