The picture was taken in 1944 Normandy . He survived the war.

I seem to stumble upon this audiobook online and never tire of listening to this tale of wars tragedy and horror. Guy Sajers book is a masterpiece of wartime literature definitely worth a read / listening.

3:11:10 Powerful words. The concept of trying to explain what combat is like to someone who has never endured the reality. Explaining what can not be explained.
