Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason & Science

15 років тому

richarddawkins.net - On the 30th of September 2007, Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens sat down for a first-of-its-kind, unmoderated 2-hour discussion, convened by RDFRS and filmed by Josh Timonen.
All four authors have recently received a large amount of media attention for their writings against religion - some positive, and some negative. In this conversation the group trades stories of the public's reaction to their recent books, their unexpected successes, criticisms and common misrepresentations. They discuss the tough questions about religion that face the world today, and propose new strategies for going forward.
This video is provided free online by The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science (RDFRS) and RichardDawkins.net . If you would like to support our work and help us provide more videos like this, please purchase the DVD through our online store richarddawkins.net/store/index... and/or consider donating to RDFRS: richarddawkinsfoundation.org/f...
Books by these authors:
"The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins
"The End of Faith" by Sam Harris
"Letter to a Christian Nation" by Sam Harris
"God is Not Great" by Christopher Hitchens
"Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon" by Daniel Dennett
Filmed and Edited by Josh Timonen

In this decade many of those who constituted my culture of thinking will be aging out ;( Those 15 years from this discussion have gone blindingly fast. Every old videos from Peterson to Hitch from Ted to podcasts are like postcards from past like great books, a nice poem from the specific period of our lives. I was 25 when I did watch this, I will miss every person religious or not that was with us through those videos in that journey called life.

Hi 'Sok--01', I miss Hitchens too; but since I am both an Atheist as well as an Existential, I well understand that though he(The Master) is no longer 'with-us'; he gave us his whole Being while here. We alone realize he actually is 'NoWhere'(see the organic disperse-ment of our own atoms and elements)--when we 'die' and rot-away, but NoLonger here. Master-Beings such as Mister Hitchens is otherwise 'extended' in leaps-and-bounds by those of us who fondly followed and remember him.

Well your pastor is subjectively right. He truly believes and taking that from him could potentially make him miserable. The problem comes when you impose your subjective truth to other people. Tolstoy was not a stupid person, in the essay "A Confession" in his late life after heavy suicidal depression he turns into religion, finding some meaning (He saw and experienced a lot in his life). Is this "self-illusion tale" bad ? Not necessarily.

Manitou, they are just four fools. Hitch who pretends to know the bible as he screws up on it over and over again including what faith means biblically. ---"Faith is the surrender of the mind, it's the surrender of reason, it's the surrender of the only thing that makes us different from other animals. It's our need to believe and to surrender our skepticism and our reason, our yearning to discard that and put all our trust or faith in someone or something, that is the sinister thing to me. ... Out of all the virtues, all the supposed virtues, faith must be the most overrated”--- Christopher Hitchens Now, look at what biblical faith really means that Hitch the dumbass didn't even look at: Biblically, faith means trust. It's a trust by evidence seen. God asks that we prove things. To reason. To get knowledge. To study. God has nothing to hide. We develop trust from what is seen, and that which is not seen yet is trusted also because of the trust built up from what is seen. It's much like a human relationship. We don't trust much until a person has gained that trust from what is observed. The difference is though, God is not limited to human powers. He created us. Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. crossexamined.org/biblical-faith-vs-blind-faith/ www.truthortradition.com/articles/what-does-the-bible-say-about-faith www.revisedenglishversion.com/Appendix/16/Faith_is_Trust www.truthortradition.com/articles/faith-a-confident-expectation-of-gods-promises-coming-to-pass www.truthortradition.com/articles/hebrews-1-11-and-faith Hitchens always went into evasive word farting to avoid key questions like how we got the creation of the universe. Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it. We can't even get science without God. The laws of nature only can come from a Lawgiver, God. Only fools follow dumbass Hitchens.
@SCQT

@@pranavlimaye "Boom, gotcha." All you've got is a dumb ass syndrome. "In an afterlife?" Just as I said, the dumbass is dead. He's not anywhere. There is no conscience. Even Christians are DEAD. Rather than explain anything to a bozo like you, show that you know what the bible is saying. For years I used to go through verses you dumbasses have no idea what you're talking about and clarify things in not only the context, but the whole picture. Then the dumbasses would just deny it all even though they had no proof why and go to anther bible subject they were dumbasses about. The bible says the fools have no delight in understanding. This shows even with the beginning, creation. Fools set their pattern from the beginning that they don't care about being logical, honest and scientific in their approach to the evidence, they just want what they want and to hell with truth. So, show that you cherish a good pattern about creation and what follows.Show that you went through the bible and just didn't jump around but started with a logical process. Did you ever read the first verse of the bible about the supernatural creation done by the supernatural creator, God? If you want to mock God, then you should have great evidence that creation happened all on its own. There is NO proof of that. Only a fool will even think that and accept it. Once that's accepted, then all the rest of foolish thoughts not caring about details will follow. Here is a great example of what a fool accepts. They started it by accepting a natural creation and is not embarrassed to show their ignorance from that point on. So if you want to pretend you know what the bible says and took it in a sequential manner to understand it (which generally how books go), then show what a real bible expert you are and how much you love reasoning by giving evidence that creation happened differently from how the bible says it happened.

Are you with me so far or is the hurting your brain capacity? Biblically, faith means trust. It's a trust based on reasonable evidence. Faith (trust) comes by hearing the word of God. I don't trust God because I could disprove what He said in the bible. You don't like me saying how the bible starts with a supernatural creation. They suggest "the gods" give these tools, but I prefer the term "higher power", whom I make no claims as to their characteristics other than as the original spark that got the whole thing moving. Your god claims to have given us the universe, fine-tuning of the universe for life, life from non-life, information for life before and after it began, the laws of nature, etc, etc, when we know that your god of nothing can do nothing. Your god of nothing has nothing to offer and its followers only offer nothing of evidence for their god of nothing. That makes them nothing of importance but the followers of the god of nothing are so delusional that they think they do have something to offer to defend their god of nothing. www.talkorigins.org/faqs/abioprob/originoflife.html The true God beats the crap out of the atheist/agnostic god of nothing. It's the atheistic/agnostic types that supply the greatest comedy. They think the universe came about by natural means. There's NO science for it and ALL the science we know proves that creation had to be supernatural and done by a supernatural creator, but...., not to atheists/agnostics. Isn't that funny?! You can't do it because you devoted your life to the god of nothing and love being a dumbass. ----Real science says nothing does nothing. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it.----- Then the extreme order we have in our universe that defies all physics, but....., not to atheists/agnostics. It's just happened by mere chances even though we prove it can't happen by chance. Funny! www.inplainsite.org/html/anthropic_principles.html kgov.com/fine-tuning-of-the-universe And life? Well, it just came from non-life. It's so absurd it's even hard to type that, but....., atheists/agnostics claim to believe it happened somehow by natural means. Again, funny! I can provide much deeper, yet there's no need to since each point proves there is no explanation for such things to have happened naturally. This IS evidence against such things happening naturally. Lame excuses of why it can still have happened naturally with no science to support it are just that, lame excuses. There's a ton more. If you want a laugh, see what atheists/agnostics believe.

Richard's mind is so amazing. That question about 55:30 around "if you decide that fooling people is better than harming them with facts, do you also apply that to yourself and fool yourself?" is exactly how to put a sharp point on this issue. If you would not fool yourself and still like to fool others, what does that say about your opinion of others? I think that Hitch really gets this, and that is why he was a no holds barred critic. That is the only respectful position to take, no matter how you cut it.

Of course they don't. Most of them are funded by various states. Few bite the hand that feeds them. In part 2, Hitch even specifically states that people have "confirmation bias" in how they might hate statism, but still cough up the rental fees. He even says that this is a way in which confirmation bias is useful!?

The element of it which I wish wasn't ignored is that the shepherd doesn't do so for his love of the lives of the sheep, but rather so he can take their wool and eat their flesh. I'm so happy to have found this, I have so so much to learn and its great to have teachers like these four. I have been over much of Mr Hitchens works, same with Mr Dawkins, also I have known a great lot about Mr Harris but I haven't delved into his work until lately. But what a charm it is, to figure there is another man that was at close standings with the 3 I mentioned moments before, Daniel Dennett seems to be a whole new chapter in the book of theology, that I cannot wait to find out more information about! This is quite exciting.

Hitchens had such a tremendous amount of inherent style. Not just in his discourse, but in his entire persona and the way in which he carried himself with confidence and respect when speaking with fellow intellectuals (who weren't representatives of religion). It's never come across as arrogance to me (note how softly and measured he addresses his colleagues when he doesn't have to combat an ideology) but a genuine knowledge of himself.

Religious opinion is merely an opinon based on a belief system. An examined, nunaced opinion based on factual analysis could easily coincide with religious opinion. In the grand scheme, how do we know what is wrong? We cannot see the eyes that veiw us in the far future.
