There are many companies working on this type of technology at the moment. We made ours in 2018, and Chad visited my house in January 2019 to film most of this. We didn't post it for various reasons, but decided now might be a good time. The fidelity of the inference is a function of how you train it.... so obviously the more data points you provide, the better it will perform. This particular type of machine learning is known as object detection, with the computation being performed by a deep neural network "on the edge". The video stream is processed locally and no internet is needed to find the object in real time. If you're working on something similar or could use this technology in your systems and would like to collaborate.... (or would simply like to support what we're doing) please reach out by using this link: www.lantern.systems/gun-detector

Do me a favor and PLEASE CONSIDER SHARING THIS VIDEO. I'm a bit worried it won't be distributed due to images in the video and the topic in general.... but I believe this is a positive thing and it's something people on both sides of the gun debate can get behind. I've been talking to people about this type of technology and in an upcoming video I will explain how this is simply one component in a much larger suite of tools which can be used. Are there flaws in this method? Absolutely. Is it possible to spoof a system like this? Yes... this could be easily tricked.... but would be perps would have to take the time to worry about it focus on tricking it. I personally think the main benefit is providing real time situational awareness. Another limitation is that it would identify toy guns as real guns and send a notification to authorities. The purpose of this video is to start the discussion because systems like this are frankly already here and in use. We don't claim to have all the answers, but we decided to use our engineering skills to try to make a positive step. We've found support amongst both sides of the gun debate, and in today's political climate that alone feels like a step in the right direction. If you'd like to reach out, we can be reached through a contact form here: www.lantern.systems/gun-detector

Not wrong. I would be curious, in maybe 5 years or so, about how machine learning is going to be used to identify common attributes of mass shooters. We are using it here to identify an active weapon, down the road I think it's obvious this will be used to profile/identify certain traits. I'm not saying that is a bad thing, I'm just raising an eyebrow at the idea and wondering how crazy this sort of tech will go.

@masasuka

The polarity is on whether we should ban guns or not, as Destin said, everyone can agree that gun deaths are bad, and the number of gun related deaths should go down. I think this tech is a great start, but the implementation will be limited, and I think the biggest opponent to its implementation will be the same as what Destin was talking about with the company that is developing the mass IR/x-ray system that will detect concealed weapons, Privacy. So my question to go along with this, if Destin is still looking, how does this differ, privacy wise, do these other technologies, you're still implementing a sort of big brother system that will constantly monitor, and detect incidents that you are teaching it, how are you planning to get over the whole 'my baby shouldn't be filmed all the time' thing that a lot of people, understandably, will voice as a blocker to getting this in schools, malls, and other public areas?

We had about 120 feeds. We had a person shoot them selves on site and only knew that we had an "active shooter" after the police got there and one of the guards had to ask what was going on. (While the guy had shot himself and no one else we didn't know that at the time) an automatic notification from cameras would allow for lock downs to go into effect much quicker.

The typical person has almost no concept of civics today. 25 years ago while selling cars trying to get a copy of a Drivers license for a test drive nearly resulted in a fight, today we have scanners that see you naked in the airport and national ID, people barely blink. This goes along with the complete lack of understanding of the Constitutional process regarding voting, Presidential and Congressional authority. AI software could also be built to detect a gun shot, and the moment a gun shot is fired then it would send the police/SWAT the face of the perp, live video of them and location of them in the building, it could also be designed to automatically lock them in the room the first shot is made.. preventing the bad guy from walking thru the school from room to room killing everyone. nothing is perfect but this would be a big improvement in the future, it may even be possible for AI to control the dispersion of sleeping gas, so if the bad guy gets locked out he falls asleep along with anyone else who is in the room, then the police show up in gas masks and he wakes up in handcuffs

I am by no means an expert but I have just finished writing a thesis on object detection using deep leaning algorithms and I can see some possible issues in your training data set that could possibly be causing some performance issues. Namely a lot of the training data seems to be high quality images taken close up to the gun which I don't think properly reflects the kind of images you would get from a security camera. Security cameras are generally low quality, positioned at a high angle and it is unlikely they would ever get such a close up view of the gun. Perhaps some artificial training data augmentation such as randomized down scaling, brightness and contrast adjustment and image rotation could help make the detector more robust. The image down scaling may improve the ability for the network to detect the gun when it is relatively far away, but something I found in my project was that the relative size of the object in frame also had an effect on performance. The objects i was detecting were anywhere from 20-100 pixels in size so I implemented a system where the input image is sliced into crops run through the detector and then stitched back together and it massively improved the performance. however it does lead to slower processing times as the network has to run multiple times per image so it may not work as well for your real-time application. Anyway, you may have already thought of these things but I thought I'd put them out there just in case you hadn't. Really cool project though, interested to see where it goes in the future.
@Jimbodawg
@Jimbodawg 4 роки тому
Very solid points, something along those lines crossed my mind when watching the video but I wasn't sure about how the technology could be improved to combat against video degradation. Maybe gesture tracking, combined with deep learning a large set of hand motions commonly used when handling firearms, like how the tech in video tracks finger placement but on a broader, more animated scale.

Why would cropping the image into smaller images help? You're still running the same # of pixels plus you risk chopping the object you're looking for in half and making it unrecognizable.
@arsenymakarov6961
@arsenymakarov6961 4 роки тому
I guess the real shipment ready solution should include multiple differently trained algorithms that work at different levels of intensity (in terms of processing power required) and have levels of alarm. For example one trained to find a person in stress that turns on the other network that gets a crop of that video feed and tracks more closely to see some other signs of potential violent behavior and if triggered the next network gets cropped up feeds of each hand and looks for a gun. And probably I'm missing some stuff that needs to be looked for.

I disagree, I think its too gimmicky. 1) easy to bypass, cover the gun with a cloth or something and the cam cant catch it. 2) most likely the system is to slow to prevent any casualties. even if it was instant and 100% perfect at detecting a gun. by the time it either allerts security or sets of an alarm, the shooter most likely has already shot at people. which, the gun shots themselves would warn everyone in the area what is going on faster than the alarm. 3) like he said about the more in depth system being too invasive of privacy, that would be whats needed to actually stop anyone like this. and systems like that are too easily abused.
@kumd
@kumd 3 роки тому
I just don’t see anything special here. Also once a shooter pulls out a gun, I’m pretty certain everyone in the room would know before the software does. The argument that the police can find the shooter with this is kind of irrelevant too, gun detection system or not they could just monitor the cameras and easily find the shooter. As brutal as it sounds, if I was an investor and or buyer I would pass on this too. Unless it had some under clothes detection technology to prevent a shooting from happening in the first place, it’s really nothing special. Also, anyone that knows or has written in Python could easily make this program using OpenCV. Item detection software can sometimes take a matter of hours to make and it’s honestly not that complicated if you use a prebuilt framework like OpenCV.

Well if the guns already in your hands chances are they're going to start firing immediately. Have you ever seen cop footage? The second the gun is out the person with it starts shooting every time guaranteed, unless it was a robbery. It's redundant. You will already be aware if they have a gun by the fact they'd be shooting or the fact you can see the goddamn gun. I understand if it's like at an entrance of a school or something, but what's the point in warning about that then? Think about it this way. Almost every single school I have ever seen or been to the cafeteria is right next to the front Entrance. A wide open space where a lot of people gather. The gunman can go from front door with gun drawn straight to shooting at masses of kids in the span of seconds. So what's the point in the system? For the other kids? They'd know before the warning because you could hear the gunshots. This isn't gonna go anywhere. There is no point.

I would support legislation requiring obfuscation of the subjects. Facial recognition is already in billions of consumer devices, and could blur them out before passing the output to a monitor. Know this was a joke, but I (like I assume most engineers) have a compulsion to analyze --if they're detecting it on a given deck, they know where it is, they're just filtering the report for the captain's ears. While the captain's managing 3 hull breaches, thruster failure, and navigating through a debris field while engaging 4 Romulan BOP's, the fact that the sensors picked up a firing arc between spatial coordinates (1,3,5) and (3,5,7) in compartment 4 (or in the hall outside) of deck 11 is probably not an appropriate level of granularity for verbal communication. The full staff on the bridge micromanages so that the captain can make the big decisions. Also, he can access info on the chair-arm displays in front of him, so most of the verbal communication is to make really sure he's aware of a strategically salient event.

It could send a message to all of the staff members, and put the whole building on lock down with first responders silently. You don't need a vocal alert, you could have a light that flashes next to the clock in the room. That could show an intruder is in the building. I have to imagine that detection would need to be more body language based. If you could tie the system into the 911 system, then when a city gets a 911 call about a robbery this could filter the footage in an area to find the potential suspect and track his location based on other cameras.
@MichaelScholten

A visual system like this will certainly have it's limitations. A system like Destin mentioned that uses another form of detection, like microwave/radar, that can see through objects such as clothes, and determine the difference between metal and skin/cloth would most likely be more accurate, however, then you're dealing with invasion of privacy along with various forms of radiation. Obviously this doesn't mean that only one type of sensor would be used world wide. Just as a business can opt to use "dumb" motion detectors over a more sophisticated camera system due to cost likewise it could be decided to just use camera assisted detection (like in Destin's video) in one location while another may opt to use a more robust system that will certainly have a higher cost, both financially and socially.

@@MrWizardjr9 I'd be for with a universal delete button on all weapons, but let's be honest, the ease of access to guns can't logically be the only, nor largest factor. Seeing as how US gun laws have gotten more restrictive over time, while mass shootings have gotten more common. Also taking into consideration that they're a relatively new issue, yet the US has had not only the 2nd Amendment the whole time, but also again firearms used to be LESS restricted than they are today. If access to guns was the main or only large factor, this would have always been an issue and just as, if not more, common than it is today in the past. Also, to suggest that the only difference culturally, politically, socially, etc between the US and Japan is firearm access is absolutely absurd. People like to point out "it's only an issue in the US, and the US has more guns. Gotcha.", but that's always been the case while mass shootings haven't always been a major issue in the US. So it doesn't logically follow that it is the deciding factor.

Could you do a video which briefly explains how the program works, then tell us how to set it up and train it to recognize different things? Maybe a follow-up video could show how to have the computer give an output like closing a switch or numerical x-y in frame positions so it could be used to automate stuff like a sweeper arm that removes flawed product from a conveyor or an x-y-z gantry to pick a part out of a bin.

So one interesting thing about computer vision algorithms like this is their inherent bias based on how they were trained. Y'all touched on this a little with the comment that you needed "lots of different hands". This is a subtle point, but super important to think about when deploying algorithms like this so that you don't end up with "racist" or "sexist" algorithms. This is a big deal in many applications of machine learning and something we think about a lot as computational biologists where these algorithms are increasingly being applied to diagnostic and prognostic predictions.

I love how respectfully you treat the topic, and the mention of the 4th amendment is important to me as well. Would also be good to talk over how technology like this could be misused and some protections we can build into it. Simple example - a bad actor could alter the training algorithm to recognize credit cards then surreptitiously place a camera in a retail location to capture the details when cards are swiped.
@Z6D4C4
@Z6D4C4 4 роки тому

@tylerreeves8026
@tylerreeves8026 4 роки тому
It may be a couple orders of magnitude easier to just use a card sniffer/scimmer then train one of the classical computer vision algorithms out there to detect credit cards. You would need a sufficiently high res camera which in turn needs an exponentially more complex neural net topology (if we use one of the ANN as our computer vision model) which in turn needs exponentially more computation power. Putting all this in a package small enough to hide discretly in a retail environment would be tricky. But you are 100% right, we do need to have serious conversations about the not so legal potentials of this technology as machines become optimized for computer learning and thus smaller and more readily available and information on how to use these coding techniques and algorithms becomes easier to learn with large libraries being written and available for free.
@gszrama
@gszrama 4 роки тому
My example was simplistic - though it does have the benefit over card skimmers in that it requires no physical manipulation of the card swiper. I'm operating under the assumption that this tech would have to process the video remotely, most likely in the cloud. A big part of their problem, as described in the video, is gaining enough image data in each frame to accurately identify a handgun regardless of orientation. Solve that problem and you've paved the way for any number of illicit uses, including my example. A mesh network of concealed cameras could hand data off to a base unit that can either process it or connect to a server/cloud instance that can. In any case, as you hinted at, @Tyler Reeves, my point was not to say that's how this tech would be used, but to say that I'd love to hear @SmarterEveryDay consider in a follow-up how the process could be guarded against misuse by bad actors, acknowledging that it's a pandora problem and it's impossible to completely safeguard any new technology from misuse.

I as a firearm owner am totally on board with this system being used the way you are talking about implementing it. I also respect you a great deal for upholding the 4th and a willingness to not violate others privacy. I think this has a lot of usefulness in places like schools and other areas where firearms not in the hands of law-enforcement officers present a danger. Sadly I can also see this being used in places and ways that it clearly should not. The tech itself is neither good nor bad but how it's used, like most things.

Destin, this was very well executed, and I like where your head is at. I am currently a Political Science student at a large public university in Colorado. I have some concerns about what this technology might hold in store for the average citizen. Here in Colorado we have campus carry and my primary concern is that in the event of an active shooter this could manifest in a situation where someone defending themselves gets shot because this technology identifies them as a threat. How can something like that be addressed? You mention in the video that there is a potential for this to happen and I think that is something which needs to be considered more heavily. Secondly I would like to consider further the implications to privacy. It is well documented that in the UK there are literally hundreds of thousands of CCTV cameras peppering London. I see a potential for this technology to encourage that sort of Surveillance State in the name of "public safety." Again, you mentioned in your video your concern for the 4th Amendment, and I would like to take a moment to reflect on how the propagation of this technology could very easily spin out of control. What are the limits? At what point does this technology go too far, and what are some practical limits to it? Given that Americans have already consented to millimeter wave detection in things like airports, could a system like this potentially desensitize a populace to further incursions on their rights? I would like to conclude by thanking anyone who read that novel and actually considered it. I understand that the spirit of this technology is to help the public and aid in offering some sort of solution to what is perceived to be a large problem in this country. I'm not taking a stance one way or another, I am just concerned about abuses and how those sorts of things may play out for the average person.

To your first concern, I would imagine that any images of someone in an active shooter situation with someone identified as brandishing a gun would have to go through a person who by looking at the footage should be able to determine if the person is a threat or not. Actually, I'd go as far as to say that innocent civilians defending themselves and other people with their own weapons are less at risk of being misidentified as threats with this AI system because someone off site who is not at risk of getting shot if they misidentify an actual threat can take more time to make the determination than someone in the heat of the moment.

In your studies have you found many instances where a CC'er was able to assist in an active shooter situation? @@mrsuperguy2073 In that instance though, it isn't misidentifying. It identified someone holding a gun and notified people with that information. Which means if a innocent civilian is caught on camera holding a gun for self defense (but the perpetrator is out of frame), the police would still get contacted and come to check out the situation. Te police would want to talk to the innocent civilian, and get as much information as they can. I see that as a win in the system. If the police mess up, and shoot the civilian for being armed, that isn't the system's fault -- that is bad police work.
