Dive into Manila's Happy Land, where the locals have turned recycling into an art form. Ever heard of "PagPag"? It's a dish whipped up from fast food leftovers, and it's a lifeline for many here. But there's a catch: while it showcases incredible resourcefulness, it's also tinged with danger. In this video we cover the surprising truths behind PagPag, revealing both its risks and the undeniable grit and spirit of Manila's slums.

Brooklyn is so ready for a pagpag pop-up! Between the dumpster-diver culture and the extent to which foodies are getting a bit bored with dishes like sisig, but still want to embrace the culture, this seems like an obvious next move!.

I know a Filipino lady whose mom actually sells pagpag. She was actually very shy initially to let me know about her "family business" but once we became close she gave me plenty of information about this kind of food. I'm a little surprised that this vendor did not boil the meat before the marination process. This is to give the impression that the meat is very clean. A rice meal with pagpag sells for 20-30 pesos in my friend's mom's stall

The mental hurdle is to great a leap for me to overcome, regardless how "safe" or "clean" it is. No human being should have to eat someone's leftovers thrown in the trash. There's a certain dignity everyone deserves to have, and food is a basic survival need. To us, it's extreme. To them, it's their way of life. It's all they've ever known and will likely ever know. Lastly, all that fast food cooked in toxic seed oils consumed on a daily basis causes all kinds of illnesses, from diabetes to heart disease, obesity, etc. Eating friend chicken alone does not cover the body's need for essential nutrients. These people are poor and nutritionally deficient in the most severe way. And there's nothing they can do about it because poverty. Man, this sucks.

The food was superb, yet many students dumped their trays with food barely eaten, untouched - entire burgers, dishes, pasta, etc. Just outside the building there were carbon protesters. I'm too sick and tired to even get into the hypocrisy, but if people could just take a look this, how desparate people from other parts of the world are about food, maybe they would value their food more and start acting by simply not wasting, rather than having the meaningless protests.

I understand the circumstances my fellow Filipinos who resort to eating pagpag are in; still, this kind of situation is inhumane and in my opinion, should not exist. Filipinos are indeed resilient and resourceful but having these qualities do not mean that everyone has to just endure the cancer of poverty forever. Everyone deserves clean, proper food, regardless of how poor they are. Urban gardening and developing alternative types of food sustainability must be prioritized by the government and introduced to the people in these areas. My heart breaks for my fellow Filipinos having to eat pagpag to survive. Thank you for making this enlightening vlog.

That’s disgusting. I lived in the Philippines for 15 months and hated everything about it. However, seeing people eat garbage is unpleasant and I don’t wish that on anyone.

6:45 Dude, kudos to you for trying it for the experience. I don’t think I could ever do that for the sake of experience as it will stick into my mind where they came from and will always imagine at what horrible state they were at when collected. And I don’t think I can stomach it. Oh boy.

"There's a law against 'pagpag'". Laws and rules in the PH are like "guidelines". Corrupt government won't care unless you get in their way. Genuinely brave of you to go there because PH slums can get pretty crazy, especially when they see foreigners (there's a persistent stigma that Caucassian people are wealthy). I'd be scared to even take out my phone in such a place, let alone use high-end equipment so out in the open.
