Those who think fairies are just the sugary-sweet, glittery Disney type are really missing out. Thank you for showing them as they really are: Enchanting, yes, maybe even helpful to humans if they're so inclined, but always mischievous. The fairies are alchemists. They teach that everything has its price, that to gain something, you must give something of equal or mirrored value in return.

When I was in art class a random untouched book fell and then the sink water turned on. The teacher said "Oh, it's the cheeky fairy that lives with me here."

I'm from the west of Ireland and grew up learning about the faeries! To this day our farmers do not cut down lone trees or bushes in the middle of their fields for fear of bad luck from destroying fairy trees!

My daughter saw a fairy in a house in Michigan.. I remember my daughter running and crying to me. I asked her why was she crying and she said she saw a little winged person. That's when she described the fairy wearing gold. My daughter did say the fairy had said "you" to her. That's what scared my daughter. I told her not to be afraid from what she described the fairy sounded beautiful and was probably in disbelief that my daughter could see her.

I am from India and we too have fairy related myths in our folklores. My grand-mom says if lucky enough you could see them during dawn, dancing amidst flower plants, it’s believed that some even made contact with humans, she told us how a great grandfather had once made contact with one and had fallen in love with the fairy, it’s believed the fairy frequently made visits to him and had also been with him on his deathbed when he took his last breath.

I'm starting to believe that these fairytale creatures (dragons, fairies, elves, etc.) actually existed. Cause it doesn't make sense that all these different places from around the world have them all in their culture. Just using different names for them depending on where they from.

I live on the Isle of Man, a small island half way between Ireland and England. Up the hill from my flat is a literal Fairy Glen complete with a fairy circle.

As an Irish person this pronunciation kills me.

I believe in fairies. My grandmother had a plant called "encantada" ,it's vine climbing all over her porch with beautiful white flowers something like orchids but bigger. Nobody has that climbing plant except my grandmother. But the amazing part is it doesn't smell anything during the day but as soon as it's midnight it will have this beautiful fragrance that seems to envelop the whole room where I sleep at her house and for some reason, it always wake me up but not the others. I miss that plant. When my grandmother died, my mother inherited it, she had a new house built but the people who built the house destroyed the plant and eversince, I'm so scared to be in that house. It seems to have lost its protection from bad spirits.

Alaskan natives had "little people" who lived in the mountains and made the clouds, however they would steal young chuldren who wondered off too far from the village, and they are who really made the clouds. We stayed close to the village to avoid becoming slaves to the 'little people."

I feel like these depictions of fairies are so modernized and even Christianized. The one where the fairies fear some aspects of Christianity might be an attempt from missionaries at weakening Irish belief and strengthening Christian values. Likewise, explanation of fairies being fallen angels might be an attempt at blending in Christianity with Irish folklore to be more acceptable among Irish people. Having studied pre-Hinduism Malay through linguistics, I've found many things that differ from our modern sense of things. Perhaps if we look deeper into the etymology of words, and compare them with other words in Irish and outside Irish, we can look at a more accurate, Gaelic view of these creatures. Take notice that this is an amateur attempt, coming from a non-native Irish Gaelic speaker who just got interested in studying cultures and languages. The word _sí_ is used to describe fairy-related concepts, such as _bean sí_ (origin of English "banshee"). There are other words pronounced in a very similar manner like _sídh_ and _sídhe,_ along with _síthe_ meaning "peace", but you shouldn't automatically assume they're related. Modern Irish underwent many sound changes from Old Irish and Proto-Celtic, and these changes may have resulted in similar-sounding words with different meanings. However, the word _bean sí_ came from Old Irish _ben síde,_ suggesting that the words _sí, síthe,_ and _sídhe_ might be related in a sense. Irish preserves old orthography. The sounds /θ ð/ (as in English _teeθ_ and _faðer)_ in Old Irish changed into /h ɣ~j/ in Modern Irish, but Modern Irish keeps the orthography intact, allowing us to make an educated guess that _sí, síth, sídh, sídhe_ are all related. From here we can expand our understanding of _sí_ as not just the creature we call "fairy", but to the concept of things enchanting, deceiving, and misguiding. _Bean sí_ therefore can be understood as a "bewitching lady" or a "deceiving lady", whose keens signal future death of a family member. Looking at Teanglann too, the keyword "fairy" gives us many interesting results. Irish has a great deal of fairy vocabularies, some of which seem to be related. The word _síbhean_ (female fairy) seems to be a compound of _sí_ and _bean_ (woman), while _síbhruíon_ (fairy palace) a compound of _sí_ and _bruíon_ (palace). I'm placing my bet on the word _sióg_ (fairy) being a compound of _sí_ and _óg_ (young), suggesting a certain type of creature whose young look is deceiving. Extending this to _bansióg_ (female fairy), which can be understood as a compound of _bean_ and _sí óg._ Judging from my studies in pre-Hinduism Malay, I dare say that _sí_ is a concept in Irish Paganism/Animism that refers to things outside of human abilities. It may had used to explain things outside the ordinary, such as natural phenomenons and physical conditions, going back to the explanation of physical disabilities being the result of _sí_ and the changelings. This understanding of "powers and beauty outside of human power" could've been humanized then, into the small folks we know. We can take the term _bean sí_ (banshee) and _síofra_ (changeling) to be the results of this anthromorphism. Just then after Christianity came, _sí_ was depicted as fallen angels and fairies, and then the modern portrayal takes dominance and _sí_ turned into the fairy we know today. Apologies for the English, I'm not a native speaker and I might've made some mistakes here and there. Hopefully my message still reads clear, though.

I’m indigenous from North America, I remember hearing elders and other knowledge keepers about fairylike beings, they’re simply called the “Little people”.

I grew up in a large 100 acre botanical garden, with ponds plants, waterfalls, trees, flowers everything. My parents lived and worked on site for 30 years. My entire life. My mom and I firmly believe it fairies and forest spirits.

I'd love to hear about this concept I've seen going around that fairies will bargain for gifts and such and if you mess up being polite or take more than you give they'll like steal your soul or something. i haven't been able to find out where that idea comes from

As someone who loves Celtic lore and is a paranormal romance fan I like.

I do believe there are various different beings of all shapes and sizes that are in a different reality (behind the veil) but not necessarily a fairy. I think these creatures once existed but you know how humans are. I think there are winged beings and unicorns etc., but they are extinct. The fairies that we see now, you might see a flash and then they are gone. They can’t trust humans.

My sister had a book of Good Faeries and Bad Faeries when we were younger. I'd love to get my hands on that book again

Fairies is a pretty broad term. Some sources go so far as to include Dullahans (and by that extent, the headless horsemen from sleepy hollow) to be labeled as Fairies. They're not all Tinkerbell from Peter Pan.

No, the Irish Gaelic word is not derived from the Persian word. Different histories and traditions. Irish Gaelic and Persian, as well as Sanskrit, Latin, English, Greek, Russian, many others are all descended from a common ancestor language. There are also at least some common mythological elements that were modified in each descendant language group.

in malaysia we have 'orang bunian' im unsure of the size (but im pretty sure theyre normal human sized) and theyre invisible! theyre usually told to be located in jungles and mountains etc. there has been many cases of people getting transported to their land and being asked to stay and marry someone or pray and etc. id loooove if you could make a video on them! always wanted to know what exactly they are etc

How mythological creatures change throughout the years is so interesting!

That was pretty good. My mom had a brownie, who would sometimes do things. Once, the brownie embarrassed the neighbor lady when she laughed at my Mom's companion. However, the thing that stands out the most is when my mom tripped on the steps, coming down from upstairs, to our living room. She was going head-long when she was jerked up right. We all laughed at her and made jokes about her being an acrobat. Well the next morning she showed me the back of her arm, at the back of her elbow. There were a series of bruises there, and when mom closed her arm, the bruises formed and hand-print. Pretty cool huh? Before my mom died, the brownie got with my sister, who has become quite the Wiccan. Glad I missed that bullet. The supernatural was natural in our house. Still, experiencing a thing and understanding a thing can be quite difficult. Your work has helped connect a few of the dots. Mike L

Very intetesting lore. Id like to see more vids about these types of topics. Ive done mushrooms a few times, and along with feeling very connected to God and nature, I start seeing small smiling faces fly around in my line of sight. They looked loving and innocent yet also mischivious. Always assumed they must be fairies or tiny angels.

When I was little in our province there's a lot of trees and our was located on of them and there's always a power out. One night around 10 pm I go out and accidentally see a huge firefly with a huge wings around the growing rose and I was very scared and it was starting to summer and more flowers were growing . And I saw 3 fireflies and one of them was like carrying a thing that's seems heavy but as I grow up I start to realize it just too big for a firefly.

Whenst looking at non-Celtic fæ, the lore of several North American Native tribes is abundantly full of tales of "Little People," who sometimes cause mischief to those who trespass into their sacred spaces (often natural freshwater sources, such as springs & certain brookes,) but who also actively allied themselves with prominent members of certain specific tribes. I'd LOVE to see a video on them!
