The fact that they waited over 6 weeks to let the public know and to get help to search for her and the fact that they so quickly wrote her out of the will and essentially asked the police to stop looking for her, seems to make me think as though the family was involved with their disappearance.

If she died getting an abortion and her family discovered that later on, maybe they wanted to save their reputation and honor or whatever. Which would make sense why they would want the case closed only after 4.5 months. It’s 1910 after all and if something like that was to be discovered, it wouldn’t have looked good, especially in the upper east side.

I kind of want to see Shane and Ryan cover the disappearance of Theodosia Burr. It's a fascinating case and it was a big deal at the time because she was such a prominent figure in the colonies. It was a high profile case because she boarded a ship and the ship itself disappeared without a trace, along with her, the captain, and a friend of Aaron Burr's. I would highly recommend anyone interested in American history to look it up. There were actual novels and poems written with theories about what happened.

My theory: When Dorothy met up with George a couple months before she disappeared, she got pregnant. 2 months later she realised she couldn’t hide her pregnancy for much longer, and couldn’t have her parents find out, especially with George being the father. She went to get an abortion in secret, using dress shopping as her excuse, however she did not survive the abortion. #postmortem

That's what I'm thinking, too. The weird way she responded to her mother when her mom asked to come along for dress shopping sounds suspicious, imo. It's as if Dorothy was suddenly panicked her mom would insist on coming along, ruining Dorothy's plan to have the abortion, and so she just said what came to her mind to try and get her mom off her back. Also, maybe her reason for carrying so much money with her on that day was to pay out-of-pocket for the surgery. The chocolates and book, too, sound like things she could've been buying to help comfort herself, knowing she was going to have the medical procedure done. All in all, it's a sad but quite plausible outcome.

Oh, to add to the theory, maybe the family did eventually find out about the circumstances of her death through a private investigator, and that is why they started asking for the police department to stop investigating the case... Considering it was the 1910s they'd most likely prefer Dorothy to be remembered as a murder victim who was kidnapped than a woman who died getting an abortion since it would have damaged the family's name :/

Another theory: Dorathy seemed fairly demanding and she was engaging with a man her family did not approve of and didnt want to pay a dowryto this family. I think she definitely ran away. George was in Italy when she was missing, and she had those pamphlets for the cruise ships that take you to Europe. She could have easily assumed another name and met him in Italy where they could Elope. And the family found this out, so they wrote her off the will so she could never come back. She seemed to be a romantic. She was an author and a poet, and the last thing she did before disappearing was pick up a romance book.
