they probably rented the outfits or got it from other period productions, wich is wat every movie and series does in cases like this. Gaiman himself must have a easy way to get those, since amazon's Good Omens also had a lot of scenes in different time periods

I love Gaiman's Death because she is one of the best versions of a very used, very essential and powerful archetype: the gentle end, made beautiful and lovable by giving it the shape of a decent, caring, compassionate person. I love Hob Gadling even more, because he is the best version of a very rarely seen, very essential yet extremely forgotten archetype: the dignified refusal of the end, made beautiful and lovable by giving it the shape of a inquisitive, persevering yet humble person. Hob isn't a hero who FIGHTs death as something evil, or a monster who PERVERTs death's function. He just refuses to surrender to an end, even a gentle one. He's simply not done yet.

I LOVE how the very first time they enter the tavern there’s a man telling a dirty joke about a vicar hunting rabbits, and when Hob goes to meet Dream in the 1980s, the *same* exact punchline can be heard being delivered by an extra/offscreen bar patron, exemplifying the observation that “the more things change, the more the stay the same, quite literally, drinking the same liquor & telling the same old jokes ~400+ years later

I’m so happy to see this! There’s been an upsetting lack of analysis on UKposts about Sandman and it was such a great season. Going in completely blind to its history, I really enjoyed it and what it was trying to do. I especially loved the significance of Hob to the story and his relationship with Dream. I’ve since started reading the comics and have just finished Seasons of Mists. I understand why some comic viewers are upset about changes - as I’ve also seen things I love adapted and not the way I would have liked - but I think you’re correct in having to consider them as two seperate (but related) texts. The way I believe Neil and the producers approached it was that it had to be accepted and understandable by a general audience for it to be renewed by a cancel happy Netflix, plus they had other requirements they had to meet (such as 45+ min runtime). So I understand the padding and such. As well as changing/rearranging bits of the story to make more sense for a new audience and give it more cohesion. The fact that they sat down before approaching Netflix and outlined not just the first season but I think up to the fourth (???) tells me they have a plan on how to make it a good story. This also wouldn’t be the first time Neil had decided to update his work over the years as new editions are released and his views and storytelling skills change and adapt. All this to say, as the Netflix series I really enjoyed it. Yes it’s different from the comic but nothing is ever a 100% adaptation as context will always change, whether that’s medium or period and place a text is created in.

Very good analysis! However, Hob did not show up early in the 80s. He showed up right on time, but Morpheus was imprisoned and could not make the meeting. What Hob does do, however, was wait an extra 30 years, probably buying the new pub when the old one closed, and most likely visiting the Pub every year for 30 years on there scheduled date until Dream finally shows up. THat proved his great friendship, that he did not give up on Dream and kept waiting for him.

Hob is THE everyman and is so necessary as a character. By the nature of the Endless only other immortal beings can truly have a relationship or understanding of them, Hob is perfect because we know he is simply a man before anything else. @@HeadsAndTales Later I realized I was wrong too. "Nada" in Polish is used in a phrase "nada się", which is a verb meaning "will fit/suit" (It will suit this situation - usually it means something akin to "good enough", not really "great for this purpose"). It's rarer without "się" but it can happen and then it means "will transmit/emit", like "TV nada ten program"/"TV will emit this program" or "Oficer nada komunikat"/"Officer will transmit the message". I loved when Hob said, "I've learned a great deal from my mistakes, but that doesn't stop me from making them." Powerful, but simple statement. Really encapsulates the humanity of Hob, and sort of smashes this idea that "a long-life is equivalent to wisdom." No. It just means we have more time to make mistakes and learn from them, but there's so much we will never understand. Just like after 400+ years, Hobs still has so many unanswered questions about Dream. There's just so much we will never know, and that is okay...because it isn't our job to understand everything. We just need to discover what life means to us and do what we can to improve with the time that we have.

Hmmm.... The concept that the other Endless do not need "companionship" is wrong. It's more that you don't see it for each of them in the comics or the show and that what they need for their realm is different. Death does spend a day a century living a life because she needs to experience life to appreciate her part in it. Destruction abandoned his realm and went walkabout going places and trying other things out and in the comics is found trying to paint (an act of creation). Delirium has always been with people, her trouble wandering the world is how often she is observed. The twins, Despair and Desire are the questionable ones especially as Despair has already changed aspects once, I suspect they haven't been introduced to a fulcrum to balance their realm against the universe (at least in the comics that I've read). I'm hoping that there'll be two more seasons, the second to cover the Key to the Gates of Hell and Dreams relationship with his family, the third to cover the full change of the Aspect of an Endless.

Honestly I had a lot of issues with the show mainly that they were so desperate to mark checkboxes that the show is set in a universe where straight people are more rare than winning the lottery. But the part I absolutely loved the most was Sandman and this dude. See when their relationship started and sandman gave the guy immortality, I figured.. here we fkn go again. Another dumb fkn preachy bs bit about how horrible and bad it is to want to live for ever. How boring it would get. Oh, how you'd suffer and beg to stop living, beg for death... But then we see the guy, get richer every millennia until he loses it all and hits rock bottom. Lives on the street goes so hungry he would have died multiple times over if it wasn't for his immortality. And he's telling all his horrible suffering to the sandman and sandman is smugly smiling like "got'em". But then when the sandman asks if he wants it to end, the guy is like... the fk? Are you insane? Of course I don't want it to end. And that .. ladies and gentlemen... that is the real truth of human existence. All those anti immortality arguments are idiotic and so insanely flawed. So then why do we say sht like "omg that would get so boring.. why would you want to live for ever" .. Boring fkn how? Tech is advancing exponentially, new stuff is happening, being discovered, invented and created all the time. There are billions of people to meet. There are innumerous amount of places to visit and they will all change beyond recognition by the time you visit them again. Plus you never have to worry, you can do everything you want in life. You can put hours into a hobby and not feel guilty. You don't ever have to worry you won't have the time to travel, to meet people, to write that book or try that game. People who say they wouldn't want to live forever are coping super hard with the fact that they are going todie or just have an insanely limited imagination and don't understand the possibilities that no longer aging gives us

The show it´s a frame by frame from the comics. What are you talking. The comic and show are frame by frame, nothing it´s wasted in both.

Should this have been ep1? The only downside of doing that is that you should not put your best episode right away. But then gain, the best episode almost feels like a filler.

Sandman's sister Death is a big part of concluding the mini arc of him finding his tools and losing his purpose. Hob is an extension of that character development. I think the positioning makes sense here.

I think that Hob would have seeked death if his immortality didn't make him young, like he will get older, his body shutting down but being unable to die, he gets older and older till he becomes like a living corpse. Immortality wouldn't be fun if you are not young biologically.

Dream was imprisoned with a bad hair style, then was released with a $1000 haircut from LA.😂😂😂 This silly ass series that takes all of its esthetical cues from the Twilight saga, is SO EFFING SILLY!!! GODDAMN MODERN MOVIES/SERIES ABSOLUTELY SUCK ASS!!

In my opinion, this show falls into the pile of all the other fails. The concept was good and piqued imagination and curiosity, but the writing and overall execution was idiotic. It's a pity.

There is so much about Netflix Sandman that was COMPLETE TRASH. The ENTIRE Dream Ruby story was such garbage. Thank god they didn't mess up the story of Hob.That was one of the best stories in the first run of Sandman, with a close second being the story of the Cats, and maybe the duel with the Devil. Netflix has destroyed SO MANY good stories with their trash liberal, gay non-sense re-writes (see Cowboy BeBop), but this one story gives me hope that maybe Netflix can redeem themselves... someday.

There's a depth the comics provide that's hard to match on television. I understand your frustration. I also went into it wanting it to make the same impression on me as reading it did, but that's impossible. It helps to realize the show isn't the same as the comics because it's "the show". They also need to make a show that appeals to a lot of people, not only the Sandman comic fans. They basically attempted an adaptation that people thought was impossible. I'm just enjoying seeing how they've adapted it all and the creative changes they made.

Honestly, I think you're being too kind to the series. Even in the stories you say are better, there are subtle changes and choices made that depart unnecessarily from the original that I think really changes Dream as a character. I think it could have been a lot worse, but subtle differences could have greatly improved it by keeping it closer to the original. (Not that adaptations should be judged based on how close to the original they are. The Boys for example is a much better series than it ever was a comic in my opinion and that made some far more major changes. I do think that the Sandman comic is so good that they could and should have been more careful with the minor changes they did make, because at the end of the day, small changes can reframe the meanings of things majorly.)
