The carbon wrapped motor is insane, probably was super hard to achieve and may have delayed the release. But Musk implied that the new cooling/heating system is a step up from the octovalve in the Y... basically the fourth generation iteration of what started with the Superbottle...and it may well be much more important than the carbon motor thing especially for drivers in places that get cold.

The ultra-light, carbon-sleeved, machine-wrapped, motor announced at Plaid Day could be bigger than 4680, due to efficiencies that apply to ALL battery formats, not just tabless! Quibbles: There's no steel casing around the rotor, which is built up of numerous thin steel sheets stacked along the axis. (The carbon sleeve is a significant departure from the prior mechanical design.) These thin sheets themselves provide the tensile strength against centrifugal forces. Also, I think that all three motors in the Model S are IPMSynRM (Internal Permanent Magnet Synchronous Reluctance Motor) - they combine the effects of the reluctance geometry of the steel rotor body with those of permanent magnets embedded within that body under the influence of the rotating magnetic field generated by the changing current in the stator coils.

Something to look into on cold-weather degradation. There seems to be more to it than just cabin heating. I’ve noticed driving in extreme cold, as long as the battery stays warm, the battery capacity does not degrade. If the battery is pre-conditioned or your just driving around town, I don’t see significant degradation;. However, driving on the interstate, when the battery gets cold, the battery capacity suddenly gets cut in half (or so). It’s not a steady drain, it’s a sudden drop. So, I think that the new heat exchanger is more about thermal management of the battery, than improving cabin heating. Just my observations.
@tianjohan4633
@tianjohan4633 2 роки тому
Well carbon itself can handle extreme heat. But one important thing to remember is that the resin used does melt long before the carbon itself so that is why we don't see entire carbon fiber exhaust systems ie on sportsbikes. Due to the heat in the exhaust gases, only that pipe on the end of the exhaust system can be made of carbon fiber. Because if you tried to make an entire exhaust system in carbon fiber the resin would melt and soon you would be driving without any exhaust system. Electric motors themselves are heat restricted. Too high temperature will render magnets useless. Even the highest quality magnets can only withstand around 200 degress celsius (iirc) or 220 ish C, and that is more or less in line with what the resin in carbon fiber can take of heat.

I've seen a report by Warren Reddich who was told by a Tesla employee, at the event, that the issue wasn't the cells, but the electronics overheating. That Tesla has achieved Plaid performance with the "old" cell format, AND to the extent that there was insufficient difference to justify the Plaid Plus (for road use), is impressive and removes another layer of FUD.

Although Tesla has lower Cd (drag coefficient), it may still require more energy than Porsche to move. The drag equation also includes (frontal) area (A). You have to multiply Cd by A for a true relative comparison. Lucid claims both a low Cd and A, so ought to be pretty efficient. Teslas are quite large cars relatively speaking (especially when compared with European cars). Edit: other things in the drag equation are constants (at same speed). The only 'variable' is are density (r, rho). High temperatures would reduce r for better acceleration and top end, (but both of these are also dependent on rolling friction and motor power and efficiency).

Tesla has in the past used different motors front and rear to optimise for power or range. If all three motors are the same, then the limiting factor may be how fast they can discharge the batteries. So your speculation that the 4680 might allow for 3*400hp could be right and the reason for the Plaid + expected to be quicker.

I heard Brooke from drag times mentioned 400 hp per motor. I believe this is for the torque vectoring. It may not be for future upscaling of power output. The motor will probably be revised again. Torque vectoring requires completely cutting off the power on one wheel, so for a fractions of a second outwould only have 800 hp
@altosack
@altosack 2 роки тому
Torque vectoring does not require shutting off one motor completely. Normally, the force vectors (meaning amplitude and direction of force) are equal; by changing the force of one wheel relative to the other, you can change the direction of the resulting summed vector of the forces from the two wheels. This difference could be only 1%, and it would still change the direction of the vector, albeit only slightly. The current can be delivered very precisely, which is directly proportional to the torque (and thus force exerted by the wheel). Modern electronics can adjust this hundreds to thousands of times per second to optimize control of the car through a turn. This is torque vectoring. If you just have one motor per axle, this is not possible, even with a torsen (torque-sensing) limited slip differential. Edit: A limited form of torque vectoring is possible with front and rear electric motors when the wheels are turned; since the force vectors are not aligned, adjusting the relative torque (force) will also change the direction of the vector, although this is quite limited compared to changing the relative force of two wheels on the same axle.
@user-vp1sc7tt4m
@user-vp1sc7tt4m 2 роки тому
I think we have just over 1000 HP total possible with all three motors in play at max at one time but when torque vectoring you can 400 two and 200 one... split it up real time and you have the split power application needed to make torque vectoring really make a difference on the track OR on the road in emergency conditions. Torque vectoring using braking has been effective for safety up to now but torque vectoring without the need for braking may make a big difference.

The 4680 cell has an aging issue? Premature aging of thermal and electrical conduction performance. Per Tesla’s patent, 4680 cell removed the “single welded tab” in the tab-less design. Eliminating the tab breaks the circuit between electrode and output terminal - cell wall. To undo the break, Tesla employ multi flap (are copper flaps protruded from periphery of electrode) to complete the circuit plus pretension induced in the cell capping process. If all goes well these flaps provide thermal and electrical conduction as expected starting from the delivery day, and will begin aging as soon as it is put on use under inertial and thermal shock in road. Why? It the flaps are annealed soft copper that can’t flex back to its original shape once deformed by inertial shocks. One by one begins to disconnect from the cell wall, until only one flap left in circuit. From there on further inertial shock will cause momentary open circuit at the cell wall. Leaving thermal and electrical conduction worse than cells with one welded tab. All chemistry improvement in the 4680 will be gated by those soft copper flaps. Failing to addressing those issue will let Tesla lost all their claims on 4680 cell. Cells that degrade below Panasonic 18650 and pouch cells. Almost all Tesla’s competitions use pouch format. If the thermal management in model3 isn’t implemented with 4680 cell pack can degrade chemical performance for modelY and future models on 4680.

1865s have some advantages over 2170s due to their smaller size, such as higher aggregate power draw and greater surface area for thermal transfer, that are particularly beneficial for the performance demands of Models S&X. I wonder if the new pack uses plate instead of ribbon cooling.

Probably not "software limited at that speed", it is battery output limited at ~750Kw. Each motor is capable of 400hp, with more battery output it should be able to go up to somewhere nearer 3 x 400 = 1200hp (depending on other limitations). Probably looking to roadster, which will be a beast.

Legacy 18650 cells. What is new is battery pack is redesigned to be higher voltage (still class 400 V), like introduced by Jaguar I-Pace and Audi E-tron in 2018, this allows higher power usage with less waste heat.

I don't think we know yet. But I expect the new pack has eliminated modules and made huge strides in the cooling system. Likely that both have helped cut significant amounts of weight. Also may allow them to fit in more cells.
@andrewpaulhart

@@sgill4833 I’d be very surprised if the batteries were tabless. This innovation was only required because of the larger form factor of the 4680 cells. Also, The whole point of sticking with the old form factor is that they can take advantage of the existing battery manufacturing capacity. This means that only tweaks to cell chemistry and pack design would be possible
@peterhelm522
@peterhelm522 2 роки тому
I would say, they had to use the 18650 cells due to better cooling possibilities than with the new 4680 cells (lower surface to volume ratio). It could be the reason why they dropped the plaid +. Due to cooling problems with the 4680 cells. It would not be reasonable that the plaid + has lower full power capabilities than the normal plaid.

What are the engineering tradeoffs in choosing to have a single speed gearbox vs two speed? Does the carbon fiber wrap offer advantages at low speed, or is it purely to be able to advertise a 200 mph top speed that almost nobody will ever make use of? (Not that this would be such a bad thing - it is a tech demonstration of the capabilities of electric cars, and anyone who doesn't want the silly top speed can not pay for it and save $50k.)

EVs with this much torque are severely traction limited, so it's the downforce that's most useful. They have far more power than the tires can handle and need the downforce. Aerodynamic drag at these relatively low speeds is relatively insignificant, especially given the motive power available.
