🎞 About Netflix One Piece 🎞
Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew explore a fantastical world of endless oceans and exotic islands in search of the world's ultimate treasure to become the next Pirate King. One Piece was developed by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda for Netflix. The series is a live action adaptation of the ongoing 1997 Japanese manga series of the same name by Eiichiro Oda, who himself served as a major creative consultant for the series. It is produced by Kaji Productions and Shueisha (who also publish the manga). The series stars an ensemble cast including Iñaki Godoy, Emily Rudd, Mackenyu, Jacob Romero Gibson, and Taz Skylar as the main five members of the Straw Hat Pirates.

I have two episode left but I'm really enjoying it. Minor complaints but overall, its great. Only watched a few episode of the anime and haven't read anything. So the show is a starting point for me and it does make me want to watch the anime, which is high praise. So happy fans appear to be please with show. Anime so hard to make live action but they were able to balance things nicely. Bring on season 2!

Seeing these reviews from people that know nothing of the series has been warming my heart as a 2 decade long fan. This is a beautiful adaptation, every theme, what One Piece is really about, all of that is suppose to come clear by this point in the anime and they NAILED IT! It is implied that Kuina's father instilled that insecurity of hers, making her think that she could never accomplish her dream to be the greatest swordmaster because of her sex (this is canon, by the way). Your criticism about Garp’s motivations probably comes from the fact that the whole Marine subplot is almost completely original to the live action. In the anime, after Coby joins the marines, we basically don’t see any more of him in the East Blue saga aside from a 2 episode mini-arc about how he and Helmeppo started training under Garp, then they don’t get reintroduced into the story until after episode 300. Garp is also a lot more laid back in the anime. While he did still try to force Luffy to become a marine instead of a pirate, he never really cared about his duties as a vice-admiral unless something very important was happening

I think if they made ax hand Morgan the Garp of the live action it would have played better. Especially if helmepo sees Captain Kuro alive. It would be a turning point for the character and be in harmony with challenging pre-conceptions
@That_Lamer
@That_Lamer 6 місяців тому
I wouldn't say it's completely original. It's basically some of the early koby/garp development via cover stories adapted to the romance dawn plot. We're just getting it really early, because they can kind of get away with introducing it now and building up the characters, so that when they're trying to cram alabasta, skypiea, etc sagas into a single season, they don't have to waste budget and episode run time building them up then. It's not truly plot faithful to those cover stories, but still distills the spirit of them.
@critica77y77
@critica77y77 6 місяців тому
On the one hand, Garp is pretty different from how he is in the manga, but I think the changes actually worked better than some people give them credit for. In the live-action, Luffy is just starting out as a pirate, and Garp understands how the World Government works. He understands that it's merciless and that by choosing to search for the One Piece, Luffy is putting himself in its crosshairs. Luffy has yet to really prove himself, and Garp isn't sure he can handle everything that comes with being a pirate. He may have a strained relationship with his grandson, but he does love him, and doesn't want Luffy to put himself in danger. Over the course of the season, he accepts that Luffy does have what it takes to face the challenges that come with his chosen path, and he won't be dissuaded from it. Expect Garp to be more laid-back when he returns in the live-action series. By that point, Garp will know that Luffy can take everything the WG can throw at him and then some.

I loved all of the koby/helmeppo development this early on by bringing the themes/vibe of early garp storyline and koby cover stories waaaaay forward. They weren't really 1:1, but given how infrequently we see those characters in the manga, it really helps instantly develop these characters, so that when they do show up in another season (thats probably trying to focus hard on getting the pace right for the main stories) we can instantly have a "oh hell yeah it's koby/garp/helmeppo" moment, rather than then having to build them. They really put together a dream team of a production crew and cast.

As a One Piece manga reader, I personally really loved this season. Yes, they removed minor characters and other moments, but they still kept that same emotional impact when those scenes needed them. As for FilmSpeak and other new comers, don't try to rush consuming One Piece. Use the backburner method: Finish other content that is shorter, but from time to time, consume One Piece until you want a break, then rinse and repeat. It's okay to not be caught up because One Piece is a story that is more about the adventures of the Straw Hats than the climax of each arc (even though I really enjoy most of the arcs). If you are interested in picking up where the live action season 1 ended: Anime: Episode 55ish (this is near the end of the East Blue Saga) Manga: I would say chapter 95/96 The live-action does take certain plot points and easter eggs that's introduced later in the manga/anime but instead introduces it this season (SPOILER EXAMPLE) Garp's relation to Luffy doesn't happen until the next few arcs, and Koby's Marine subplot is more off-screen where as in the live-action, we actually see Koby's growth in real-time (END SPOILER EXAMPLE). I don't want to make this comment any longer, but I'm just glad they did (in my opinion) the most faithful adaptation possible for live-action medium.

I honestly feel like the emotional impactful moments work better in the live action than the manga. Like everything is more relatable, more, well closer to reality. That is not to say that there wouldn't be 100 ways to do it wrong, but they didn't. For regional rankings, Nami came in 1st for North America. Nami *is* popular, is what I am saying. Also, Nami saves the crew like dozens of times by way of her being the most reasonable member of the crew until a certain lover of history joins. They would all be dead without her. But I guess the same could be said about all of the crew. Everyone gets moments where they save the crew from danger. Yes, even Usopp.

I understand it’s disappointing some things are absent but to me that doesn’t mean it’s bad. The show isn’t worse for not having those things and I get it I have the same emotional attachment to those moments. Could the show be better with those moments, maybe but if I were to look at the show on its own merit the absence of these things does not make it not feel like One Piece or make the show worse.

@@hidetakamiyazaki1825 Bowing is definitely a Japanese cultural habit and it would've been weird for western audiences to witness two European men doing it in real life. They could've done a hug but I think they chose not to, to emphasize their inability to show their real care and appreciation for each other until the very last moment when they realize it's really a goodbye. I guess this is a western trope of stubborn fathers and their sons having a very emotionally refrained relationship where even small change is really significant.

@@hidetakamiyazaki1825 We got Sanji and Zeff almost leaving on bad terms but making up in the end. Don Krieg vs Luffy being removed didn't really take away any of the story and themes. Outside of nesscary cuts to make for live action overall the live action makes much smarter changes. I like how much they devlop Koby made work even better with how great the acting for him is. My only complaint is, sometimes you can feel the pacing being too fast because of how much had to be trimmed down from the Manga and anime. But at the end of the day, everything just works. One thing about the original One Piece manga is that it 100% commits to the bit. Yes, there are sharkmen, restaurants in the middle of the ocean and fruits that can make you stretchy. But yes, there's also gut wrenching tragedy and uplifting victories and inescapable poignance. Because the live action follows its lead and both makes a larger than life ridiculous world _and_ commits to the emotional sincerity of the story, it works. It doesn't hurt that a lot of folks who worked on the show were fans, too.

Let me preface this by saying, this isn’t really a criticism of FilmSpeak at all because the impression he has of Luffy has been shaped entirely by OPLA and he can’t help that. Luffy certainly does embody the “rebellious act of being a pirate, the individualism of sticking it to the system, without giving way to malice” and ultimately being free. The show nailed that aspect of piracy in the world of One Piece. Where I think this video, (and in turn the show if it can lead you to have this impression) went wrong is this idea that Luffy is actively trying to change the public image of piracy. In the anime and manga, Luffy couldn’t care less about that. He’s repeatedly talked about not being a hero and how there’s no such thing as fighting dirty when you’re a pirate. I think Inãki’s Luffy has the same view of being a pirate but it might’ve been lost in translation. Luffy doesn’t care about how naysayers to the pirate life view the act of being a pirate. The reason Luffy is the way he is is specifically because he met Shanks and the rest of the Red Haired Pirates at such a young and impressionable age. The Red Haired Pirates are responsible for shaping Luffy’s view of what it means to be a pirate. They’re a crew of good men who happen to be pirates but that doesn’t stop Lucky Roo from casually shooting a man in the head in chapter 1. The Red Haired pirates embody the freedom of being a pirate in Luffy’s eyes and thus inspired him to become one. Luffy’s view of being a pirate doesn’t align with many others in the series, be they pirate or marine. I think the Netflix version went wrong by spreading Luffy’s backstory across multiple episodes (I get that it makes for good TV in an 8 episode show in the era of streaming) and by not placing more emphasis on Shanks decision not to fight the bandits. The bandits disrespect Shanks in a much more profound way in the anime/manga, with their leader literally pouring a drink over Shanks. Shanks not retaliating here is pivotal in Luffy’s development as a person. Here he learns that a pirate doesn’t always have to resort to violence and needs to know when it is and isn’t worth it. Shanks and his crew only retaliate against their enemies when Luffy, their friend, is put in danger because of them. These events culminate in Luffy learning that not everything is worth fighting over but protecting the people you care about certainly is. To Luffy, that’s what being a pirate is about. Had the live action done that flashback more justice, I think it would be clearer that Luffy doesn’t really care about rehabilitating the image of piracy, he’s just living life in the way that he thinks is right. He was 7 years old when the Red Haired pirates showed him what being a pirate could be. Had he met someone like Doflamingo as a child or pre time skip Bellamy, he could very well have ended up the marine that Garp hoped he’d become.

It’s tragic, deep, full of action, magic, campaigns, war, monsters, knights, mages, Paladins, HOT sex, so full of emotions!! The character development is beyond good and a very realistic take on marriage.

As a long time One Piece anime watcher (on and off Manga reader), I am highly impressed by the live action. I think everyone involved truly cared about the product and source material and it shows! I am glad Oda was a huge part of the production journey, as well. I think that helped them a lot too. I am excited for season 2!

Great picking up of the elements that have translated into the live action from the One Piece manga that show why it's so good and lasted so long! A suggestion - the quick cuts and repetitive B roll especially in the first half of the video really distracted from your video essay. Hope you can make it feel less jarringly repetitive in future videos!

Once you read/watch One Piece you come to realize there isn't enough One Piece. Greatest piece of modern fiction, period.

I believe Netflix One-piece is successful because the producers worked so closely with One Pieces creator. He was there with the writing team, and the production team to make sure the story that Netflix was crafting would be respecting and paying homage to the source material.

the show is basically what finally gave me the last little push i needed to actually sit down and read the manga. highly worth it, and i like how much the show reflects the actual characters, even if they did change a few details and added in some stuff

Nami Is Honestly really loved by the fanbase, only a small minority that didn't get where she is coming from don't like her, they didn't get how nami's love for money comes directly from her fear of losing the ppl she loves.

WELCOME NEW NAKAMA!!!!! hilarious that you caught on to so many themes i feel are obvious in the manga but less obvious in the live action. Well done to you and the shows producers !!

Based on the themes im seeing you pick up, you absolutely need to read the manga or something. You'll love the full story. It's high praise when the story is 1091 chapters long (so far) and I'm worried that when it ends I'll still want more.

As a manga reader, I didn't really like the Garp/Koby additions, but it seems like most new watchers thought it added a lot more complexity and moral/ethical dilemmas. That whole arc was a show only addition, but I guess it did introduce some of the more complex themes earlier into the series. In the manga, the whole East Blue arc was relatively straightforward and just a bunch of people getting together, fighting their demons, and chasing their dreams. Whether the Marines were a force of good or evil was mostly just a footnote since interactions with the marines were relatively brief and self-contained without Garp chasing the crew. It came at the cost of losing some character moments with characters like Zoro and Usopp, who had less shine for their backstories, and the Black Cat pirates also got done pretty dirty. But, if it was good for new watchers, then I guess I'm okay with it.

For those looking to read the manga or watch the anime now be prepared because you're gonna get as much of a change in story as we long time fans have gotten with the LA. NOT to its detriment, mind you. Things like Garp chasing Luffy around is not an event that happens. Which, to answer the question posed in the video: I think at first Garp wanted to stop Luffy, send him back to Fushcia Village, but then by the time he leaves Baratie it becomes a "test".

I have been huge of One Piece for years, so when I first heard the news of live adaptation, I was very sceptical. I had ptsd of other anime's live action. So I was definitely not looking forward. But still when the series came out, I gave it a try. And oh boy I was blown away to the other universe. Though the story changed a bit here and there, they perfectly managed to capture the essence. Actors portrayed the role so well, the details 🤌 And the most mindblowing thing was the set, most of them were made from scratch. I thought it was CGI and was very impressed with the technology. This is hands down the best live adaptation. As a fan, I love love love it.

I loved your synopsis and how you caught all the important details. I discovered One Piece about 4 yrs ago and I'm current with the story. What put me off in the beginning was some of the bizarre character designs, especially those with objects affixed to their faces or weird stich lines, but once I got into it I realized the story was so much much more than some zany pirate adventure eith cool fights but about the people you meet along the way and the impact people make on one another. There even are a number of redemption arcs as characters begin to understand each other better. Its not about where someone is in life but where they're going. Its absolutely refreshing and inspiring and reminder to have real life hope and compassion.

I'm saying this as someone who has been a lifelong fan of the manga and anime, the live action series is excellent. The changes made make a lot of sense for this season. I expect far less major changes as the show goes on.
