The six-day stranding of the Ever Given in the Suez Canal last March did something incredibly rare: it made regular people care about shipping, the means by which more than 80% of the world’s goods are transported. It took only one wrong turn for the container ship to bring a critical trading artery to a standstill. This is how a $1 billion worth of cargo got stuck, freed and impounded as the courts took over.

Having transited the Suez Canal around 20 times between 1982 and 2005 I can declare that there is no single ‘pilot’ in the canal who leaves a ship without ‘ a gift’. These so called pilots consider themselves supermen. Every captain is glad when he has passed the canal without to much trouble. I am sure every experienced master is more able to pass the canal with his crew than with this corrupt pilots.

As a captain who crossed that waterways many times can honestly say there is a very thin line between safe passage and disasters like this one. If the canal authority puts a legal force that forbids the passage of huge vessels at certain wind force will be relaxing for the captains and pilots but companies will not accept it due to excessive waiting time. Can you blame the captain ? can you blame pilots ? The industry demands swift transaction but nobody takes the responsibility. This is the problem only captains face with. If you decide to wait , company will ask why are you waiting when others proceed. Many others may proceed without problems but one mistake is enough for a disaster. You can not justify yourself unless it is proven by an accident.

The Suez Canal pilots are regular beggars, asking mostly for cigarettes, but not one carton, they are very displeased if they only get one carton, the worst part is that no matter how many cartons you give them they continue to hassle the captain for more. I know because I have gone thru the canal many times as ship´s captain; in one occasion I was actually force to take myself to the opposite side of the bridge in order for the pilot to leave me alone. The Egyptians are notoriously avers to admitting fault, so it is not estrange that they deny reports of the shameful behaviour of their pilots, but every captain that has transited the canal knows all too well it is very true.

I looked up the Suez canal authority rules and it states the pilots don't take over the helm. I call BS on the theory that the bernoulli effect could be large enough to contribute to this failure. Sure, it is a quadratic relationship to speed, but the ship was operating in a storm and the wind load, erratic as it is, should have a much larger and chaotic effect than the gradual change in pressure differential between the two sides of the ship, due to increasing the speed. The bernoulli equation is not even relevant in most practical flows, and I would be very sceptical that it holds up in the canal under these conditions.

Yap, that sounds about right. They do ask for cartons of cigs. I was one lowly sailor who's in charge of giving them cigs away. They even bring along 3 or 4 people with them on board, claiming to be electricians and assistants, and demand to have cabins to stay in for the duration of the crossing. Then after they are settled in the cabins, they lay down their wares and trinkets for sale to the crew in the mess hall or the alleyways, from shirts to fake watches. I miss those days.

I traveled through the Suez Canal at least 20 times, and 60% of the pilots are useless except for begging for gifts. I can't agree. The captain, who speaks for the shipowner, is the only one with responsibility; the pilot serves merely as his or her advisor. In other words, the captain's actions have the same legal weight as those taken by the shipowner or firm. It is the captain's fault in this specific instance. That big loaded ship already had a minimum of bottom clearance, so he should first wait for better weather. He had to decline the pilot's request to increase the speed because higher speeds cause the ship's stern to sink further and steering to become more challenging. It appears that the captain or pilots were unable to maneuver the ship in the severe wind. Human errors due to lack of experience always cause panic, which results in disaster. The captain, who always agrees with company directives, was excellent until something went wrong, just like what happened with the Costa Concordia.

Suez canal authority is a joke. By personal experience, on an average you need to keep following number of cigarettes aside for Suez passage 5 cartons for the boarding agent, 2 for suez canal inspector, 3 for suez canal quarantine, 2 for suez crew and suez electrician, 2 for harbour pilot, 3 for first canal pilot, 3 for second canal pilot. Beware that those are the minimum numbers that will upset the pilot as he expects more and start a drama in order to get more cigarettes, some kg of cheese, some liters of milk and olive oil. In 10 years of passing the Suez Canal only recently one young suez canal inspector refused gifts. That gives hopes for the future.

Warren is an inspiration for many investors, but the times of opportunity are different today than they were back then. However, the principle of compounding remains the same. Money typically only starts compounding into big numbers, when big numbers are added to the formula as a basis. Compounding your way up to $100 starting with $1.00 without contributions may take a while. However inputs of experience, both positive and negative can sometimes yield numbers far greater and faster, than contributions to the currency itself. Also the compounding of time can result in a number of byproducts, reputation growth where people want to trade with you, or the reverse. Your body also, live on a steady diet of cigarettes and hard liquor, and your Ferrari is ready for the scrap heap by the time you're 30. Anyway what Warren was able to achieve is incredible, however I'm sure there was a ton that built his and others fortune that isn't typically mentioned other than those ready to hand over their money.

Before the ship start her transit to Canal, Authorities for inward clearance board the ship and they were the first to ask for gifts. When transit start, Electrician, Boatman and First Pilot board the vessel, they also asked for gifts. Second Pilot and Third Pilot also asked for gifts. Gifts include Cigarettes, Groceries, Things and Money if found some expired book or chart. Also, Suez Canal has the expensive AVCS Permit about $25 for 3 months and required paper charts even you are already Full Ecdis. I told to myself, they feed their family by working unfairly.

THE ACCIDENT WAS A PURE SABOTAGE INNITIATED BY THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT TO TEST OUT ECONOMICAL EFFECTS ! ITS A PRE TEST TO FUTURE SABOTAGE ACTIONS WORLDWIDE WHEN THEY ATTACK TAIWAN _ GLOBAL ATTACK ! WHY ARE WESTERN PAPERS _ BLOOMBERG SO SHY TO CALL CHINA A TOTALITARIAN REGIME WITH A FASCIST IDEA COPIED FROM GERMANY ? WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO SPEAK IT OUT ?

The problem was simple, it's been known to give(bribe) cigarettes(and other things) to canal pilots. But new policy of the company who owns the ship prohibited this practice, so the pilots didn't do their job properly....

How much is a pack of cigarettes worth ?! You call that a bribe?! Silly argument actually
@MichelNabil
@MichelNabil 2 роки тому
@@vinithamin2007 how could a single person carry 200 packs alone? Of course that's a false acquisition ... Also a typical transit may reach 12 to 14 hours, so no problem for them to sleep while waiting their turn to pass in the great bitter lake ...

Does not matter if the Capitan is at the other end of the ship jerking off. He is the final and authority on everything. You can advise him and help. But at the end of the day everything is on his shoulders.
