Files update is more important than stage manager, I think. You can look at four apps, but you can’t work in all four at the same time…files management is the hidden gem of the update and nobody speaks about it

This is Apple desperately trying to keep the iPad a “tablet” and keep it in that market segment so it doesn’t consume their laptop division… which honestly I don’t think it would but I can understand their worry. Attempts by companies to reinforce these walls between divisions that they themselves have made kind of blurry have always upset consumers.

I have the big iPad Pro that I use primarily as pencil/paper replacement for notes, homework assignments, etc... I think its a great device for this. One nagging gripe I have about the OS though, is that there still isn't the ability to have the screen split horizontally into top and bottom while in portrait orientation. When school was mostly remote, it would have been sooo nice to have Zoom or whatever video streaming app in the upper half with notetaking app in the bottom half while the device is in portrait so you basically have 2 stacked landscape screens. It seems like a no-brainer to me!

Nursing student here: my iPad is indispensable. I’m having to get a new one (I’ve had my current one for at least 4 years so it’s gone a while) because I truly love it’s note-taking ability. Our profs use various things like PowerPoint, Teams, Zoom, Canvas, etc and having the ability to write all over a PowerPoint they’ve sent and then exchange notes between classmates for studying. I would guess at least 1/2 our cohort are using iPads with Apple Pencil for lectures and seminars.

I think they should try making a really useful graphing calculator type of calculator app for the iPad. Thinking back to my high school days, that would've been insanely useful. Wouldn't need a TI-83 or whatever, and they could make it several times simpler and more intuitive. I had to graph equations all the time, and the extra space on an iPad would be perfect for graphing.

Stage manager seemed weird when it was announced, and that doesn’t change with each video I see where someone demos/explains it. I’m a pretty hardcore iPad user-I use my 11” Pro everyday, for work and leisure, and am regularly using split screens + slide over windows-but I just don’t ‘get’ how Stage manager will improve my workflow as its presently designed.

iPad, it is an amazing piece of hardware held hostage by the operating system. We are at a point that an IPad or an IPhone could be transformed into a low performance MAC, but profits will forever prevent any of these from materializing. Fun fact, in the early days of the IPad, Apple commissioned a few machine shops to create a frame for an IPad/MAC device but it seems the idea was not implemented.

Well, I personally use iPad as a media device, you know, youtube, tv shows and stuff. Sometimes I do paint in procreate, the other times (not that many), some multitasking. One day I was on my vacation and needed to connect to my office PC and do some stuff, and I used an iPad, remotely connected, had some chats opened in the stage manager, went back and forth. I think it was an "ok" experience, not considering the "aim assist" of a mouse thingy.

As a software developer, I can't imagine someone giving our team this set of requirements for a project. The whole multitasking flow is so confusing. Almost every "distinctly iPad" feature makes me think "who is asking for this?"

I appreciate the thoughtful way Marques presents technology on this channel. He isn't shy about addressing shortcomings (as he sees them) of a given device. But he does so in a way that is still respectful of the work that other intelligent human beings have put into the product.

I completely agree with your point of view. I’m a college student and i use my iPad Air 4th gen for notes taking and watching UKposts. I’m a everyday user of the multitasking and personally i love it. When i saw the stage manager coming on the iPad I wasn’t really happy for to reasons: 1- my iPad doesn’t have the M1 chip. 2- it didn’t seem as easy and good to use as the multitasking. For these reasons I’m still happy to use the multitasking and stage Magee won’t convince me to change my iPad.

Been trying to use my iPad as a strictly, trackpad-only device sometimes for Apple Pencil use with photo editing, however it’s only slightly available by editing on the iPad, looking at the iPad and having sidecar to the main screen mirrored, but it would be amazing if apple actually allowed mouse cursor control with the pencil and a pressure sensor to detect when “painting” or “cloning” etc would activate. Surprised they haven’t added this small feature yet

Most of the apps I use on the iPad are in full screen mode. However sometimes, e.g. while doing some research, split view comes into play. What I found interesting is what Craig Federighi said in this year's John Gruber WWDC talk show: Apple wants the iPad to have a very focused and clean experience unlike the mac where you can have windows all over the place.

Interesting analysis. So I started using an iPad as a sketchbook, image browser, concept board portfolio kind of thing before finishing the art projects on a Wacom graphics tablet connected to an iMac. But since the iMac OS stopped being supported any more and the iPad art programs improved, I’ve drifted into using the iPad as a both a portable laptop computer on the road and as the primary graphics tablet a lot of the time. It’s a bit frustrating as a laptop for spreadsheets, accounts and word type documents, great for concept/story board stuff and adequate for most graphic work- but just fantastic for portability. I watch my daughter push her iPad to do more stuff than I could with animation as well as multi-tasking, it’s probably more intuitive for her as she’s grown up on this tech and I didn’t.

I use my iPad as my daily computer, and I think this update is a massive improvement for multitasking. I can have a PDF editor behind Safari so I can scribble easier. I can have translate behind my notes for quicker translations. I use my iPad for research (in physics and biology) as well as language learning, writing, and editing. I think it’s perfect for these needs, and really enjoyable to use. And again, not everyone requires coding or intensive programs for their daily work.

I'm actually really happy with the current multitasking options. Having a lecture on one side and notes on the other and occasionally bring in the slide over calculator is a great workflow for studying. Only thing that always bothered me is how you can't have two apps vertically in portrait orientation. But stage manager looks too cluttered. Just give me a 4x4 grid i can resize and it would be perfect.

The big thing I really hate about ALL of these iPad features is a feeling of lack of control. When I adjust the size of a window, I want to adjust it to the size that I want in that moment, and having the whole window automatically pop into a predetermined window size undermines my sense of control. When I move a window around, all my other windows rearrange to different locations, and its not necessarily where I wanted them. When I rearrange a split screen slider, I’m stuck with fixed positions that don’t necessarily fit with the app sizes I had in mind. Even the way the mouse snaps to objects makes me feel less in control. Overall, it ends up being a slightly more frustrating experience, even if everything it’s doing is ultimately helpful. Just let me position things exactly where I want, because the way it is now feels like someone else is using the steering wheel at the same time. Sure, that helping hand may guide me but I feel more out of control at the same time

I use my iPad (5th gen) mainly for taking notes with the Apple Pencil in class on Goodnotes. The most multitasking I’ll do is having Goodnotes on the right, and the lecture slides or the syllable on the left for reference. I also draw a bit in Procreate, though drawing isn’t as comfortable on the 5th gen iPad and it’s large gap between the glass & the actual screen 😅

I have a 12 inch iPad Pro with the M1 chip. I use it for taking notes in meetings with clients at work and any time in general I need to take notes. Also use it for basic browsing. Drawing and general art making is the main reason why I bought it because that is my passion, this is where the multitasking issues actually start to take place. Imagine watching a video, needing multiple reference photos in front of you and the art that you are actually doing. I think they should have a mode where you have one full page up and be able to put small windows on top of that where you have full control over placement and sizing. This would make it easier to do art because when a window gets in the way I can simply resize or move it to an obscure location

I have used both the 10” and 12.9” iPad and I felt the multitasking works much better on the bigger screen. With that said, I still use 95% of the app fullscreen. The time when I do multi-app is when I need to take some notes/reminders while browsing the web or writing a message while watching UKposts - which I found to be quite a good feature when you know how to get the most out of it. But still, like you said, it’s not that intuitive for most users.

I’m a med student and I use my iPad Pro 13” as my only device. Sat down at a computer the other day and was really lost trying to navigate through settings, files, etc… I agree there are a lot of things you can’t do on the iPad that lots of people use a laptop or computer for, but I don’t do those things, so I’m now completely immersed in this iPad way of things. It’s like you said, they’re creating an ‘iPad way’ of doing things, and it really is just different. I use my iPad in almost every configurable way possible. I have the keyboard case when I’m browsing the internet/using websites. I take it off and take notes with the Apple Pencil in class. I always have a few different apps in the slide-over open. I use split screen when I’m working on something, but need to quickly reference my notes on the other half. I use lots of widgets, and lots of custom made shortcuts/automations. A lot of the shortcuts I made I assigned a keyboard short cut to so I can run a quick “drop down app” over the top of everything i have open. I agree the water is a little muddy with all the different ways to multitask, but once I integrate it into my routines I find ways to utilize each one for what i need. I’m all for the new update coming!

Great video as always! I’m a freelance graphic designer, and I use an iPad as a support device for work. With Universal Control, my iPad becomes a third screen after my iMac & MacBook. I use it to keep my to do list and project notes up, run my work timers, and occasionally send invoices. I also use it on the go for presentations and emailing out files. I’m not too excited for the new features, Stage Manager seems unnecessary to me, but I also don’t want or need my iPad to replace my MacBook. I think you may be right that Apple is looking for ways to do things in an “iPad way”, maybe to justify having a third set of product lines instead of merging with MacBook?

I have a 2018 iPad Pro and it’s still fast! I used to use it for everything in college. Papers, notes, reading music…. Once I got my MacBook I switched to using it for everything except for reading music. I still use my iPad but only while playing music and I have a foot petal to change pages. That’s it. I went to just using the MacBook because of the ease of use and the multitasking capabilities.

I use my iPad for resource management really, it’s excellent for viewing and editing on a basic level, but the second you try to do more either it takes an extra app, or odd work-around, if at all. But for note taking and project management it shines, it’s wonderful to use, and using it at school has been a joy.

The split view use for drawing in procreate is incredible and it feels amazing to own this device, that’s of course until I want to work on a word document and 89 % of the features are not available for use on the iPad.

Since going to Uni, I've been starting to use my iPad a whole lot more. I used to only work on a full screen app but now I use pretty much all the different Multi-tasking modes to have different apps open and I've gotten pretty used to it! No it won't be my computer, but now it's my Book, Notebook, and much more!

I have the the iPad Pro 11” Gen 1, I use the Magic Keyboard (the one for a Mac) and the Magic Mouse. I like having the separate keyboard. I just find it a little more convenient then the all in one iPad Magic Keyboard. I usually use one app at a time and occasionally a slide over app. I use my iPad Pro to take meeting notes using the pencil. I can separate notes by project and easily refer back to them as needed. It’s a great tool for me.

When I first got my iPad, I only used it for digital art and some photo editing. But now I also use it for editing videos, I take notes on it, read on it(not just books, reading internet articles on the iPad is a breath) and even play some games on it. I’m currently learning chess with an interactive game. The iPad has become my favorite tech product ever. I do t multitask a lot, and I usually don’t feel the need. I take notes while watching a video, or browse through images while I draw. And that’s enough for me.

Can we just appreciate how much staging is done in these frames? EVERYTHING is colour-coordinated to the subject of the shot. Everything is balanced by hue in the frame. I actually missed much of the spoken content because I was inspecting the frame so intently. Dang. Well done. *slow clap*

For work, I use my iPad for drawing markups, a screen for flying my drone, video conferencing, email, lite photoshop work… Sometimes all together. At a recent site visit I was flying the drone while on a conference call with a client showing them what the drone sees. It eats up the battery but it works really well and impresses the clients.

On iPad if I'm taking notes or something, I tend to have my notes on that little vertical sidebar menu, or I do splitscreen. The other side is to look at PDF documents, web pages, whatever the presenter needs me to see. When I'm teaching I use OneNote to show my lesson plan, and if I want to play music for the class (music teacher) I have spotify or UKposts in that vertical swipe menu. Other than that I use it for music production, and using splitscreen makes dragging files and clips from the files app into a music program is pretty nice.

I’ve used the iPad Pro as my “daily driver” for years. This will be huge for me. Even just having apps full screen on an external monitor. The new quirks regarding app movement and placement are fairly easy to learn if you actually need them… and anyone who doesn’t need them can happily ignore the feature. Three big use cases: 1) writing full screen on iPad with reference material and notes on monitor, 2) Apple Pencil in a notes app on iPad with main writing app open on a monitor, 3) video editing in full screen with reference material and notes on a separate monitor

As a musician, I mostly use my 2018 iPad Pro for sheet music. While it excels in the areas I need it to, I do wish I could use it as an entire laptop replacement. The problem is, even though “laptop” features have become available for iPad (except I won’t get Stage Manager bc no M1 😭) you have to completely sacrifice the iPad’s trademark convenience to use them. And the fact that you can’t use desktop apps on it is a dealbreaker; I ended up needing to get a laptop anyway. That being said, it’s still a great piece of tech over 3 years later that I use daily.

I use my iPad mostly for sheets and music notation, and it is incredibly easy to use for that purpose. I'm not sure if this will be the update for me as a music student, but I'm sure it will come in handy some time in the future. Also I have the 11" iPad Pro early 2020 so it does not have the M1 chip. It will be exiting to se if the not that powerful iPads will support this in the final update though.

Just waited for the full screen function so 16 beta on my ipad pro 11 m1... and yes i love it this stage manager...also now i feel better the multi window management too.. so for me this is much better then before. Video editing with Luma fusion is great for me..

I use my iPad for college, and I am so glad Stage Manager is coming to iPad. iPad’s trackpad support allows me to remote access computers and use iPad as a computer through desktop streaming. It becomes such a versatile device. It can be paired with the Mac as a 2nd display, can window manage now, and can complete many computer related tasks in a smaller form factor.

When I had my 11” iPad Pro, I would use a lot of split-screen apps. On my Mini, I mostly use split-screen when I’m using UKposts, since it doesn’t yet reliably support PiP. I mostly use slideover and PiP now I wish I could connect the Mini to an external display without mirroring. I don’t even *need* Stage Manager, I just want to be able to make my little iPad a big iPad when I need it without having to worry about black bars. I just need one full-screen app to throw onto the external display, maybe also slideover and PiP

I use my iPad mainly for work based web browsing split view with emails on a smaller sized window using spark app and a 3rd app view overlay for getting to other apps I use on the quick. Very handy and find it’s plenty enough and keeps things tidy from a use case perspective.

I use my Ipad Pro 12.9 inch 2022 model as a digital sculpting/drawing tablet and I couldnt be happier with it from that perspective. I dont do alot of multi-tasking on the Ipad, since I use my PC for that, but for artists Ipad is in a league of its own with no serious competition.

I mostly do illustration work on my iPad, so my most used case scenario is split-screen. I’d open Procreate on one side and have visual references/inspirations to work from.

I use the iPad for almost everything. Writing, admin work, even photo editing. Up until late last year I was even editing videos on it. Unfortunately I was having some issues with bugs and the app I was using, so I had to shift to a Mac for video editing. Every other task I do business or personal related is done on the iPad. I truly love the new stage manager feature and it fits perfectly with the way I work. There are a few changes I would like to see but they’re minor. The core of what stage manager is what’s important to me right now and I think it’s exciting.

Most definitely I’ll answer this question. As a student I use it everyday for; essay writing and research as my courses relies on it a lot, photography editing as I am apart of the photography society and of course to watch content like right now. Having the Apple Pencil and keyboard is a big help. I also love to use my iPad and laptop at the same time which is great. Multitasking is great but, can be better as you say in the video.

I normally use my iPad for editing shorts form videos, research, recording voiceovers and sometimes recording videos with it. The split screen comes in helpful when I want to read and record a script with the Note app here and the voice memos app on the other side

"It's a bunch of sizes Apple picked" This pretty much sums up one of the biggest not-really-important but infuriating things I hate about Apple's products. The similar behavior of MacOS is one of the most frustrating things about using it every time I have to. Their "this is the way it is because we said so, and if you think otherwise you're wrong" is just... I like Linus's description: arrogant.

Hi. I’m using the iPad Pro for: 1. Sketching, design, handwriting recognition, web browsing, watching videos. 2. As a portable drawing tablet for the Mac using Sidecar. I typically use full screen apps. But maybe 10-20% of the time I use split screen. And sometimes notes or Safari in a floating tall window. I will probably never use Stage manager on the Mac. Looks incredibly space inefficient. I will definitely try it out in the iPad. Although I don’t like the idea of not going full screen on the iPad.

I got my first iPad late 2020 and use it for googling, video content, taking some notes, reading stuff... entertainment. It does NOT feel like a work machine at all (though I'm sure it has performance), but I could never imagine it for work related stuff (docs, spreadsheets, presentation etc.) the apps are just basic and lack functions/shortcuts. work would take 2x 3x more time with an iPad

I use my iPad Pro 11-inch for anything away from home, for example on university campus or in a coffee shop and predominantly for taking notes with Apple Pencil (for which I use the Notes app in split screen with Files or Safari. The exception to this is whenever I need some serious fan-cooled power for Computer Aided Design or programming. I use my MacBook Pro 16-inch as a desktop, mainly because I'm nervous about dropping it or having it stolen and it's not as easy to put in a backpack as the iPad. Universal Control is awesome and means I can use the iPad as an external monitor when at my desk; I'll often have Safari on the iPad and Calendar, Reminders, FaceTime and Preview on my MacBook desktop when in a meeting for example. I use multiple desktops on the MacBook and have been impressed by flawlessly running every app I need simultaneously with the iPad to hand if I want a touchscreen interface to sketch something, play a game or watch MKBHD on UKposts whilst cooking. I also usually take my iPad as a computer when travelling and for any engineers out there I highly recommend checking out Shapr3D for CAD on the move.

I have the big m1 iPad Pro and I use it for college and design. I’m an engineering major and I exclusively use the touch screen and tbh switching to digital everything has been sooo nice. For my degree I need to be really organized and having all my hand written notes in one spot that can be accessed from any of my devices is MAD convenient. And for creative projects there are 3d modeling softwares that are comparable to my professional software on PC and it’s damn powerful, and the ecosystem benefits of apple are really nice. My iPad has become my primary device but it didn’t replace my main desktop though I have fewer reasons to use it. I love how it’s simplified my workflows. I constantly use spllitview since the screen is big enough to support them and I bet I’ll use the new shit all the time. Feel like this device was made for me.

My honest two cents: I bought a 2018 iPad Pro about 3 years ago for a good price, have been using it daily since, and tbh it's been my #1 best purchase I've ever made dollar for dollar for how much use I get from it, I've never gotten more value or longevity out of any other tech product, so kudos there. I use it as my sole Apple device as my desktop is a PC, I have no traditional laptop, and I've used Android phones since 2009 so I can't comment on any features that involve Apple's ecosystem. I am a med student using it as my sole laptop replacement and it has been performing admirably in that role with no slow downs over the 3 years, if anything recent updates have it feeling more fast and fluid than ever, it's really quite uncanny and unlike anything I've ever experienced with either Android phones or tablets. I love taking notes on it with the Magic Keyboard+Apple Pencil combo, the fact the it floats in the case combined with its diminutive size(11 in) means it fits rather nicely on those small, foldy lecture hall desks, and due to my specific subject matter, being able to draw diagrams and pictures of organs or physiological processes happening in the body can help to visualize these concepts more clearly and effectively, not to mention the myriad high-quality apps that 3d model the body. Last thing I would mention is that though I agree with the desire for more desktop-class features like a more natural version of multi-tasking, I've noticed that I don't actually do that many desktop-y things on my iPad often enough that I really found those features to be lacking(if that even makes any sense lol), and for anything that requires me to sit down for more than like 15-20 min I'm probably just going to use my desktop anyways so it really never ended up mattering. All things considered, ymmv but it's enough of a "PC" for enough of the time to be a worthy laptop replacement for me, it just has the added bonus of having access to the App Store so I get access to all those juicy apps and games :)

Haven’t tried Stage Manager but use split screen every day on my M1 iPad Pro 2021 and love it.

I mainly use my iPad Pro for note taking in school and occasionally use multitasking with split screening. I do think that stage manager is a better way to multitask but in this aspect, I think a simpler solution is found on competitor tablets, specifically DeX mode on Samsung phones and tablets. Doing it the iPad way may be original but they're definitely sacrificing simplicity for it.

I use the iPad just for media, keeping track of my day during work and as a second mini computer on the side at work, when I travel and need to take notes in a compact form, sometimes as a tool to prep for certain meetings that don't require a laptop, a place to brainstorm when it comes to things that are creative/don't need a computer. It's very niche and depends on the person, but it's basically fitting the "everything I need that's not a desktop" need for me.

I have an iPad mini 6 and I use a single app in portrait mode, or split screen in landscape. The new mini is great in landscape, it's like having three iPhones stuck together. Great for chatting in multiple apps when combined with the floating keyboard. I rarely use slide over. Because the mini is small, it's easy to reach all the buttons and gestures for managing split screen. By far my favorite iPad form factor and I've tried every size.

Mainly use my iPad in either single screen mode or split screen where I can keep a video on the left and notes on the right. I also had a play with stage manager recently (have an m1 air)… and normally I can work out how to do things but had to google to work out how to resize etc (hadn’t watched any of the bumf on stage manager - just turned it on for the first time!)… For a small screen iPad like mine I think 2 apps up is the limit and most workflows I would use this would be fine or even just one app and switching… But I still have and for foreseeable future will keep a laptop (which does seem to get less and less use these days). I also think it’s a bit easier to use iMovie on the laptop but then I only edit videos rarely and have done some on the iPad recently to make some magic movies for the kids ! Great bit of kit… I think you’re bang on that stage manager and other features are indeed a little bit weird but what’s the odds it will improve massively with little tweaks and we may look back at this as revolutionary! They rarely get things wrong or not fixable…!

I’ve used iPad Pro as my only personal computer since 2018. I realized I didn’t need a full blown OS to do 99% of the things I do at home, so I prioritized screen quality for media consumption and portability. The only times I ever have multiple windows open are when taking notes or juggling password manager or authentication apps, but I like having the option.

I loved the idea of the iPad from it's debut, and bought my first one (first gen air) right after it came out. At first, I used it with a non keyboard type of case, and tried every type of app I could find. I ended up composing an entire electronic album using Korg's Gadget app, and dreamed of one day using Logic on an iPad. A couple of years later, I found out about Brydge keyboards and started using my iPad more like a laptop. It was an adjustment, but I mostly liked using it this way. I was able to do almost everything I needed to do on an iPad, and only used a Mac when I needed to use Logic. I was also hoping that one day real trackpad support would come. I upgraded to a 2018 11" iPad Pro, and bought the Magic keyboard not long after. My mind was blown. I had also read rumors that Final Cut and Logic would finally come to the iPad in 2020 or 2021. iPad versions of those apps never materialized of course, but I still loved my new setup, and the ability to seamlessly switch from clamshell mode to no case mode (something that was quite the hassle with the Brydge keyboard). 2022 comes along and my aging Mac needed to be replaced, I decided to go with the M1 14" MBP, and use a standalone display when working in my studio. I was ready to go back to having a laptop (something I hadn't had since 2013, I had been on an iMac). I noticed that I was WAY more productive using the MBP, especially for the type of things I use computers for (music, editing, retro gaming). A few weeks later, my poor iPad fell out of the back of my vehicle and completely shattered. 3 months later and I have not replaced it. I have instead opted to upgrade to the iPhone Pro Max from my mini. I rarely used the Apple Pencil, and will just use my wife's iPad if I ever really need to draw something. I don't see myself buying a new iPad anytime soon. The iPad was a really fun experiment for me, and it was fun to see all the new software features and all the new hardware over the years, but ultimately, I think I'm a Mac guy.

Great video! Use my iPad in 2 ways... as a second monitor for my Mac mini for work and as a media consumption device. I use often the split screen functionality with the 3 dots but would probably use it more as a "computer" if the multitasking was easier.

I do my personal finances and my digital planning on my M1 11in iPad Pro. When doing my budgeting I usually have 3 apps opened, my personal finance/budgeting software (YNAB), an excel spreadsheet and my banking app. I tried stage manager for a few days for this. I literally hated it. And I consider myself a tech geek who loves to discover new ways of doing tech things. I just literally hated stage manager on my ipad and reverted to split screen + Slide Over page to handle my finances. As far as my digital planning, it’s a hobby and a way of relaxing doing creativity and scheduling in the same time. I absolutely love using my Apple Pencil 2 to do my digital planning and get some creativity going. Loved this video ❤

Sits on my desk for months at a time with no charge. I think this video brought be some clarity, that the iPad has never been for me. I’ve been thru so many of them, and they all never get used. They sound so amazing, and new features reel me in, but between my iPhone, and access to a Mac, that’s all I need. 95 per cent of my needs are dealt with on my iPhone, and I use my Mac when I need or want to.

Being an iPad Air 2020 owner with the A14 chip, I understand that you cannot have 8 different apps open, the processor just wouldn’t be able to handle it on stage manager but I do wish that we could have the fancy full screen external display. I know the iPad can do this because some apps like keynote and apple fitness+ can full screen with no issue

Right now, I mostly use my 2018 9.7" iPad exclusively in split screen view. In a "1/3" - "2/3" view, it's my go-to for flash card practice. Whenever I have to switch to some different view though, say the web browser, it does feel like it's interrupting the experience a little bit since it switches focus. It's not complete in a sense that a desktop experience is, but I guess it's adequate, especially for the then-pricepoint of around €300. If they were to make it perfect, who'd even buy the "full desktop experience" anymore?

My iPad use is limited to using it for Teams, research, and some network apps. As a network engineer I find having a USB C RJ45 adaptor works a treat for me. Yeah multitasking isn't the greatest when you have to workflows from Mac/PC but it works and I'm happy with it.

I use my iPad for my on-line College course. I have been looking forward to stage manager for that reason. It has made my workflow faster when writing papers and referencing notes from saved journals. If I’m reading course material or using the Kindle app I stick to one screen. My iPad Pro 12.9 has replaced my laptop. I don’t see myself wanting a laptop in the future. The Apple mouse is buggy when scrolling documents in Stage Manager. It scrolls based on hovering over a window instead of scroll the app that is open on top. It would be nice to see stage manager transition to the Home Screen and back again. Love your UKposts channel this is the first time I viewed it.

I use my iPad 7th Gen usually for media consumption, sometimes for note-taken and a lot of browsing. I use full-screen apps with slide-over almost every single day. While I like this new UI that Apple is launching for the M-series iPads, I am glad they are not changing the existing one (especially on the weaker iPads).

This theory is not a theory. It is a demonstrable fact and always has been. The iPad is supposed to be a different experience. Right off the bat it is supposed to be a touch based user interface, not a mouse and keyboard user interface like the Mac. There is nothing so frustrating as watching UKposts reviewers banging it on a table and chanting. ‘It’s not a Mac. It’s not a Mac.” It’s like watching the apes with their bones at the beginning of 2001. My God people, it is an entirely different style of computing, one that is far more focused and immersive and tactile than the one we’ve become accustomed to for the last 40 years. Yet people keep bizarrely, trying to get Apple to turn it into a touch Mac. Here’shere’s a thing. the macOS is not built for touch manipulation. If you want a Mac then buy a Mac they’re about the same price at this point. Trying to turn the iPad into a Mac is just silly. Personally, I find the iPad is the ideal tool for creating and flushing out my ideas. It is when I am ready to actually implement those ideas that I turn back to my MacBook Pro. This is only because I enjoy using the iPad in this way, because the bottom line is the Mac can do anything the iPad can do, but not vice versa.

I have an iPad Air 4, I mainly use it with an Apple Pencil to take notes and read. Sometimes I draw or edit photos on it too. Being able to screenshot certain muscles and bones in Anatomyka and transfer those images to Notability is really great and saves a lot of time. There's a lot of iPad users in my class so I can say that they're really popular amongst the med students, most of them use an iPad 9 due to how affordable it was back when school started. (Apple pricing kinda went insane after November 2021). It's also really convinent to use it as a media consumption device, the screen is exceptional compared to my laptop and phone and the speakers are really good too.

Great review. I use my iPad Pro 90% of the time and iPhone 13Pro 10%. iPad on the Magic keyboard 90% (landscape), and use mainly for watching youtube, email, web browsing, taking notes and creating stuff. It’s my one-stop-shop. Frustrated there’s not yet a decent calculator - it’s basic, but something we need. Occasionally I use split screen for copying/pasting between Apps - I’m not looking forward to more complications! Would rather some better Apps would be available, and more intuitive links to HomeKit devices - e.g. to auto stock-take and re-order for my fridge / pantry, see electricity usage per device / household to improve energy usage optimisation etc.

When I first heard about the new stage manager feature I was really disappointed that it only comes to iPads with an M1 Chip since I have the 2020 A12z Bionic iPad Pro and don’t consider updating for another 2-3 years. I only use it for university to organize files, write handwritten notes and create MindMaps and stuff.. I almost always use the split screen view with a small slider window on the side. I have to say though that the new stage manager at least without external screens is not too much of a difference to my workflow right now, so I will probably stay with my iPad and won’t buy a new one just to get the feature

I use my iPad Pro 11 for work. I am a Script Supervisor in the film industry using a couple app’s specific for what I do.. I really do wish that Final Draft for the iPad had the same exact features as its counterpart on the laptop. As you mentioned Apple wants to keep it separate which really sucks. Have the 3rd party app developers make Pro versions of their apps. Maybe someday but don’t see it happening anytime real soon. Thank you again for your wonderful informative videos.

I use my iPad Pro 11" (2nd gen from 2018, so an old one) mainly for drawing and reading, and generally one app at a time, save for when I use slide-over to pull a chat app like Discord or Messenger on screen. I did try Stage Manager for a total of 1 hour and then I turned it back off. It just wasn't doing it for me with all the additional sizing operations and overhead on a screen of that size, and the way I use it to focus on my specific use-cases.

Dang. I'm glad someone voices my thoughts so well! Honestly the biggest issue with an iPad for me is apple's lack of wanting to allow people to use it how they want. I.e. I want to transfer stuff off my iPad onto my NAS. But because it's Apple, it takes way, way longer and is more difficult than it needs to be

For artists i think itd be nice to have a separate display for drawing references etc. While keeping procreate fullscreen on the ipad itself

My iPad is mainly used for content consumption (reading, listening, watching), document creation and editing on the go (use Google Docs and Liquidtext to mark up PDFs). Most of the time I don't use the multitasking features because I feel they are too clunky (using 2018 iPad pro), but I probably would use it more if it wasn't so clunky (apps that I use aren't supported well or are only iPhone apps like you showed in the Instagram app).

I am a huge note taker on the ipad and using the side by side multi tasking is often the best option for me. So i can pop to the side look and then write what I need to

I have a 2018 iPad Pro which I use primarily for drawing. I could update to an M1 model and potentially use an external monitor to maybe use my iPad sort of like a Cintiq (Which might already be possible with sidecar, although I’ve never actually tried). Still, I find that more than anything, iPad is a tool I use for fun and recreation as opposed to a tool for actual work.

I use my 2018 iPad pro 11" mostly for note-taking and school work. I love using split screen with two apps at a time which most commonly are notability and safari. I dislike apple for not bringing stage manager for the older iPads since when I try to revise my notes for my exams, it does feel a bit finicky to use a small display when I have a PC with two big monitors sitting by. They could have at least given us a "worse" version for older models, it could have had maybe 2 apps open at a time and have the external display support.

I have a 2018 11 inch ipad pro. 4 years in, it still runs great. It lives in a apply keyboard cover, I use it 95% for watching video, 5% when I don't want to type on my phone but don't want to pull out a laptop. I'm not a power user, I just love the excellent display and great speakers.

Thanks for explaining the incoming stage manager and other iPad features. It would also be nice to hear from google in the future of why they don’t have any app for the stocks. iPad should have a calculator app totally agree.

I understand that stage manager requires a higher multitasking capability but its sucks that A14 Bionic iPads can’t use second monitors

I actually use the different multitasking options quite regularly, the buttons were more awkward for me than the gestures though. Honestly just sticking the options in something like Control Center would be my dream scenario. My iPad is what I use for most of my computing but being to 2020 Pro model I’m still going to have those awful bars and it bothers me too much; for desktop sessions I have an old MacBook Pro in clamshell and just use iCloud to share files between the two.

I mostly use it for school and sometimes to watch something in free lessons and most of the time I have like a book or reference page open on the left side and the actual note (I use apple notes for everything but am looking forward to freeform) on the right side.

I use my iPad Mini for financial planning and giving demonstrations (portfolios, illustrations, texts). Great for broadcasting through Zoom and drawing in real time. Also, I use it to watch your videos:)

I was quite excited when i saw stage manager and new features in the files app. I even thought of buying logitech keyboard combo (cheaper and better alternative to magic keyboard). However, watching many videos on this, I realized this isn't going to satisfy my 'leave your laptop at home for iPad while traveling' need. This is mainly due to couple of reasons - the first being the largely different and limited capability of the files app. And second stage manager, like you said it doesn't really feel like a usual mac multitasking interface. So in hindsight, I will continue using my iPad for light work, drawing, media consumption in bed and attending meetings (the camera in 11 pro is way better than any laptop).

I switched from my older ipad pro 10.5 to the latest ipad mini, watching here, I don't feel I am missing out by switching to the mini instead of a newer pro. the magnetic snap on pencil and way more mobile footprint has made it a much more productive device for me, and I don't try to force it to be a laptop when I... already own one. I think a very small minority of "power" users could use an iPad full-time. I think for some of those users (in particular developers), Chrome OS may be a better alternative. For most ipad users, they don't need it to show 4 apps and are content with it as a secondary device.

I use my iPad as an all in one notebook for school and have all of my textbooks downloaded on it too! Right now I use the split screen feature for when I am copying down notes from the textbook into goodnotes and sometimes it can be annoying to get the "perfect" size of screen setup for what I need, I'm hoping that stage manager will make it so that I can adjust how I want my apps to be displayed much easier. I also wonder how it will work with the apple pencil?

I edit photos on my ipad and I’ve hardly ever used the split screen feature but I frequently alt-tab with the magic keyboard which is very handy

My iPad is almost solely a media device for me. I have it instead of a TV, really. The display is excellent, it travels easily, which I do often, and has plenty of storage for downloading all the whatnot I want. I like interacting with things like the NYT, Netflix, UKposts, etc in the app more than on desktop, and I can keep my work and play lives really separate with the help of this thing. The other big use case is as a PDF and worksheet machine. It’s great as a student to have a dedicated notepad and graphic tablet. I used to use my Wacom Intuos BT with my XPS 13 for a lot of the same tasks that my iPad just does better with an Apple Pencil. The file management is a little worse, but the app interfaces are so good, I can’t really turn it down compared to some janky PC software with a separate tablet that runs out of battery, doesn’t export as smoothly, etc. So inevitably, I almost never have to multitask aside from having 2 windows open for about 2 mins to copy something over. I respect the power users, but for so much else of what I need, it’s easier to have a normal laptop form factor, running normal software, with normal connectivity. I just can’t make this replace my laptop, and don’t really need it to. It works best for me as a supplementary handy widget next to a more technical and standard machine.

The way I use my ipad is unique to a degree, in that it is 100% my main college laptop. The multi screen action is my favorite, and I have had an easy time grouping files and knowing where they are. There is never a time that I am only on one app at a time. And that is why I love the concept of having 4 different apps to choose from in multitasking that is coming out. I always find myself switching between apps or sets of two apps, so to be able to have more at once is lovely. And with a second screen I can have 4 more? My adhd ass is gonna make it work perfectly. Speaking of splitscreen. I'm running Android 9 on a phone, and it has splitscreen apps for 3 positions. I'd love do have three apps open at once, which should be possible. Since there should be space for three of the smallest sized apps. Similarly, iPad has the option to have the tall skinny apps in splitscreen. Would be nice to have many tall skinny apps that you could quickly open and close.

Used the 3rd gen a lot. Taking notes in class, reading sheet music, watching netflix. The side by side thing could have been useful for quick changes between notes, powerpoint slide, and chat messages. I believe humans are not built for multitasking. But we have a really good senare for seeing patterns when comparing things, like data. The key is to get all the information you need in one app, without switching to another window. And if this is not possible, second best is having two windows side by side. Say you have compared the information and now need to communicate what you have found. You need to get your information to your email app as effortless and quick as possible. I dont use iPad anymore. For work i use autohotkey to get information from another sources into an application, without switching. And if i need to get my findings from a to b, i have a more advanced clipboard and keyboard shortcuts for this. Multiple windows are second best to already having the information available in one place. Switching between windows precise and instant. Having too much information/too many windows open is just distracting and is bad for productivity

Most of the time I’m a 1 at a time ipad user. But occasionally, like when I’m DMing a D&D session, I’ll have side by side OneNote and safari (with dndbeyond up). I’m really excited for this, it’ll be nice to have more multitasking options. And I may have to invest in a portable monitor or something.

It is always fun to see people expecting a full mac experience from the ipad. I have been using this device since the day it launched more than a decade ago. And my usage not changed that much ever since. I had an iphone and a desktop pc back then, and in the middle the ipad just fit perfectly. I am using it as my sole goto device for learning, youtube, reading, writing, and much more. For serious multitasking i am using my pc, but for all the rest, ipad has just great flexibility and mobility that i simply cant live without anymore. Like writing a post or a journal entry on the dinner table and switching to a magazine or a book when you go to the bathroom. Managing your finances while taking a coffee and playing a game on the couch. It is just perfect as is. Any improvement to be more capable is nice but it already has a huge capability that proved to be a great fit to my everyday life.

I am using my iPad only in touch mode, as I don’t own the magic keyboard since its too expensive for me. Multitasking is something I sometimes use for school work, etc. but it generally annoys me more than it helps me. It may be because I don’t own the 12.9” iPad Pro but the 11” (correct me on the sizes if I’m wrong). Stage manager got me a bit excited up until the point they mentioned that it is locked behind the M1 Chip which my iPad doesn’t possess. It would’ve generally a bit more useful than the spindly tiny windows and the buggy keyboard while multitasking for me. But as someone else mentioned, the file system update is a lot more useful for me as I constantly have to download, edit and reopen files for school, which are all in their separate folders… The only thing I was really excited for was iOs, iPadOs just doesn’t have as many new features for the older gens of iPads to be that huge of a change. Which is sad since I bought a Pro for school which I was expecting to support newer updates and changes to workflow.

Software is the sole reason I’ve not upgraded from my 2018 iPad Pro. As a writer, I use my iPad for work (Scrivener, Notes, Obsidian, browser research), where split screen multitasking is fine but not as good as full-fledged multitasking in MacOS (where I essentially use the same apps and either multiple monitors on my Mac Pro or multiple desktops on my MacBook Pro). Part of this limitation is less OS-related and more of how my primary manuscript work app, Scrivener, differs from iPad to Mac, but that difference (software more than hardware) makes MacOS preferable. For other content consumption, though, (UKposts, Netflix, audiobooks, e-books) full screen apps and split screen multitasking delivers up a superior experience. I even like the sense of “forced uni-tasking” during e-mail, FaceTime, and messaging apps. What really holds me back from attempting an iPad only workflow is Scrivener more than anything else, but if they ever updated the app to be more desktop-like (specifically allowing for dual-pane editing in-app), I still don’t think I’d need anything more than my current 2018 iPad Pro. Prior iterations of “multitasking” have been sufficient for my uses if not preferable in limited circumstances.

For the most part, I’m a full screen person. I do use split screen from time to time. Mostly, I like to do my photo editing w/ music or UKposts playing the background. Or I have an old IPad Mini if I want to watch something on one screen and edit or type up something on the other. For me, using my iPad Pro 12.9” with expanded 2nd screen functionality is what I’m most looking forward to. It won’t make me dump my desktop, but it will reduce my time on it a fair bit if it’s convenient enough.

I think for me the best thing about the iPad is (or was prior to the introduction of multitasking) is the single app full screen view. Helps me focus better. Stage manager and slide over just seem like an idea that works great in theory but make me feel overwhelmed by the amount of content on the screen. Edit: split view works much better though in my opinion given the size of iPad pro 12.9.

I mostly use my iPad for media (UKposts, movies, TV shows). I also use my iPad during school and that’s when splitscreening and multitasking really comes in handy. For example, I’ll have a Google Doc full of instructions my teacher gave us and then doing the assignment in Notability. It works pretty easily and it’s really helful.

Since almost the beginning of the iPad revolutionary era I had 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 inch as my main and only multitasking device and to be honest the split screen and the iPad OS 15 was more than I wonted as med Student and Graphic designer, on the other hand there was a lot of restriction as you mention regarding iPad OS Well for me the main issue is there’s no statistical app to rely on regarding my researchers in school as an example SPSS. So I had to buy a laptop in order to execute my tasks.
