Es una fruta de la misma familia del chicozapote o sapodilla. Cuando está muy madura se usa como medicina por la gran cantidad de mucílagos que contiene. Su jugo tiene propiedades astringentes. Suele usarse en México, Colombia y Ecuador para la bronquitis, la anemia, la diarrea y la fiebre. También actúa como antiinflamatorio.
