From a Federer fan's point of view, for sure. Objectively, it is a monumental moment in the history of sports, a shining example of perseverence and mental strength from Djokovic. And no, Federer didn't deserve it, if he had 2 match points and failed to take advantage of them on his own serve. Whats even more hilarious is that in the same match Djokovic had 2 match points also and won them both 🤣

so how old was he in 2019 like 38? he won Dubai, Miami, Halle, Basel, Final at Indian wells, had matchpoints in the final of Wimbledon after winning over Nadal in the semis in amazing fashion. reached the semis at the french. at this age grandpa Fed was perfectly able to be competitive with the absolute Best players in the world on any surface. I highly doubt something like this will be repeated. the things this man has done is just astonishing. I just looked this up on wikipedia and i literally couldnt believe it. If there is a legal way to make a bet, I would like to offer you 2:1 odds in your favour, that Djokovic will win a slam at age of 38. Or even better, lets make it two slams. 😉

@@tomaskopolia1031 Novak is phenomenal no doubt...but imo his game is too physical and you really feel that body aging at 30+...at 38 its hard to see him competing with 20 something year olds in 5 set matches with his game (hes already losing right now to younger guys, as is Rafa)...what allowed Fed to win is his offensive game, short points, and feel/skill...I don't think a physical/defensive game has a shot at a slam at 38
@tomaskopolia1031
@tomaskopolia1031 Рік тому
@@rm1626 physical? Not at all. His serve is amazing. And the game is elevated to highest possible level, what you could see in Israel and Astana. And talking about the body, there is no other sportsman with the discipline of Novak Djokovic. We are talking about, vegetarian diet, yoga, constant day by day exercise. Anyway, I would like to place a bet on my words. 2 slams in one year, two years from now, for Novak Djokovic.

In my opinion, this was the last healthy and top version of Roger we could see, in this tournament, before the nightmare of injuries that lead up to his sadly retirement. At the start of 2020, going into the Australian Open something was off, even though he reached the semis against Joker, but you could tell that the movement and explosiveness was not longer there and that something was happening physically.
@mihaicristi9617
@mihaicristi9617 Рік тому
True, he almost lost against Milman and Sandgren. It was a miracle that he saved those matches, at the same time, he was a little lucky as those guys missed easy chances of closing the match. I think the knee has been bothering him right at the beginning of the tournament, but he didn't want to give up. I wish he did, maybe the injury wouldn't be that bad and he might go on a top 5 level until the end of 2021. US Open, was a great chance for another slam, as Djokovic was not in the finals, also in Wimbledon 2021, Djokovic didn't look as strong as 2018 or 19. Even if he wouldn't win a slam, I believe that he would break Connors record of wins and maybe his title record, as he would most likely play the 2022 as his last season and could grab smaller titles.

Fed had that abdominal pull suffered from his prior two matches and didn't really want to play but decided to do it for the fans. Joker actually thanked Fed for not withdrawing from the match because he had that same injury before and it was unplayable. How much of the pull was a compensation for his knee is speculation because Fed never discusses his injuries and only gives you vague details. But he announced soon afterwards that after the exhibition in So. Africa with Rafa, he would have to undergo another knee surgery. Then everything went south.

Unbearable. I can’t think about it. We were already celebrating at 40-15 screaming and shouting and with tears of joy. Then total disbelief and shock when Novak won. It’s the worst loss of his career I’m sure. There are four or five really painful Federer losses where he lost a seemingly winning position but Wimbledon 2019 is horrendous. But at almost 38 and playing the world no 1, it’s an amazing run but still it will haunt him and his fans forever. He may have lost more to Rafa but Novak has inflicted the most painful losses on him. I actually think Roger is a better player and has more skill and creativity and variety and artistry but Novak is stronger mentally and he plays that wall like attritional defence that players just don’t get past often. It’s about stamina and belief. Roger hadn’t quite got the mental tenacity to deal with that. Only Rafa can deal with Novaks mental strength.

Not being able to guess where the next ball was going confounded Djokovich here in this match. Novak was not at his 100% focused self; probably the crowd supporting Roger was getting to him. But that doesn't detract from *_how_* he played. Why not remember that since that's what most of us watched him for? 🙂

I was there live for this match and was so pumped for Fed winning I remember some Serbs next to me giving me looks for screaming after every Fed point lol. I think the reason the Wimby 2019 loss is hard to take is not just because it was so close but also a rare case where the better player on the day lost.. Novak just survived and credit to him he played incredible defensively in the tiebreaks but Fed was in control throughout the whole match and let it slip. The fact its had such a big impact historically on the slam count etc is the other reason its hard to take. Fed has had some incredibly unfortunate but also self inflicted losses throughout his career such as the two us opens against novak and also the US open final against Del Po
@miroslavjanecek9993
@miroslavjanecek9993 Рік тому
@@R3L1KZ For me why is it so hard to take is not because of slam count (20 or 21, who cares). But because it was his chance to end his career with a great victory, beating both Nadal and Djokovic for the first time ever in his career to win a GS, when he was almost 38. And it was one point away. Damn.

@R3L1KZ Рік тому
@@miroslavjanecek9993 yep good point that is also another good reason. Its so cruel that that was his last rea chance to win a slam. I know people will think its wild to say but Fed is actually an under achiever in terms of the numbers he couldve and shouldve had if he didnt mentally implode in some matches. Whereas Rafa and Novak have maximised absolutely everything. That shows how insane Feds talent is that hes still right up there with them despite these losses.
@thesoccergod

@@R3L1KZ No, it's not "wild" at all. It's perfectly true. Fed was the winningest "loser" in tennis history, something that, once again, _only_ he could have managed. I like to think of it as a feather in his cap and further proof that he was sui generis and tennis's "only true genius". - A drubbing of Hewitt in the final of USO 2004, - a lost MP in his SF against Safin in AO 2005, - 2 lost MPs in Roma 2006 in a full 5 sets match against a lossless Rafa on clay (Fed's *greatest* early-career loss perhaps), - a 6-0 drubbing of Djoko in Cincy 2012, - a 6-0 drubbing of Nadal at WTF 2010, - a points dominance of 1.02 in the lost USO 2015 against Djoko, - a win streak of 6 matches (off clay) against Nadal from 2017 onwards, - back to back domination of Nadal and Djoko in Wimbledon 2019 (winning one and losing one, the latter the Fed's *greatest* late-career loss), - an utter domination of Djoko in their knockout match at WTF 2019, - a points won % of 49.4% against Rafa in a 16-24 H2H, - a PD of 1.02, GD of 1.01, and points won % of 50.2% in the 23-27 H2H against the Djoker (the only such anomaly in tennis history, especially over such a large set of matches) ... and so on. *_Every one_** of these, wins and losses, is Fed.* He may have hurt his fans more often than any other great player in any sport, but he played the game like he was tennis incarnated...which I believe he was. A never-before-never-again phenomenon.

Well said ; 👌👌 Ive seen most of the 2019 Wimbledon final and yes Fed was a little unlucky to not pull it off - but then some credit must go to his opponent ; Djokovic has never been an exciting player to watch in my book ; although he has all rudiments of the game sewn up - rock solid everywhere and by 2019 the most consistent winner over 5 sets on all surfaces other than clay As Kyrios described after his loss in the 22" final against him - " hes so composed" unless his oponent can blow him away decisively , Djokovic just stays with them til the bitter end - until somhow he comes out on top ! Its a game of attrition mostly , without a lot of flare or great overpowering shots ; oponent s just seem to wilt against him over the long term . And the 2019 final was a good example of this

When the tour changes the surfaces to slow down the game to force longer baseline rallies, all-court players really suffered. Baseline grinders really took advantage of this change. This is why I believe Federer is the GOAT of men’s tennis. He is the only men’s player to transcend the game like Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods did for their sports. While stats are an important factor, they certainly do not tell the complete story.

This was a great match. And one of my favorite Fed matches. You can clearly see how beautiful Fed moves. Every motion is efficient and footwork is effortless. Too me, you could show this to any tennis player as the model of how a tennis player should move on the court. This match was Fed's response to the painful loss at Wimbledon where he outplayed Joker in every category except for the final score. He had two match points and if he gotten any first serves in, he would have won. I think he probably regretted not taking something off the first serve or simply kicked it to just get them in cos Joker was standing so far back on the first serve. It's something he will live with for rest of his life. This match started slow but quickly became a foot race played like a video game. Obviously Fed is gonna win that contest every time. Why Joker tried to stay with Fed on the baseline is anybody's guess but he would stand a better chance positioned back and playing defense. I think it was pure ego, coming from the heals of the Wimby win, and trying to make a statement that he was as good as Fed indoors which is ludicrous. As a result, he got destroyed and put in his place. Was not even a contest.

Federer didn't outplay Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. *W/UE* *Djokovic - 14/6, 2/10, 9/7, 9/6, 20/23* *Federer - 21/14, 9/4, 13/12, 14/10, 37/22* Interesting... According to this, Djokovic was better player in 1st set (better W/UE ratio, more points - even excluding those two more in TB). Third and fifth sets were pretty close, obviously, Federer had much better W/UE ratio in fifth, but maybe Djokovic decided not to be superactive in Fed's service games (after that rebreak), but to preserve power for his own, and for TB. Maybe even the gamestyle can be a little deceiving. Well, we can speculate, but the result is... as it is. The only important statistic where Fed really outplayed Novak was serve (and return) here. In first 3,5 sets Fed was almost untouchable on serve, lots of easy put away winners etc... And total points won statistic is mostly skewed by that 2nd set that Novak pretty blatantly tanked after getting broken (Fed won 14 more points in that one). *Your judgment is probably clowded by painful loss that you have hard time getting over.* If Novak lost 1st set there is just no way he would have given second the way he did and whole flow of the match would be different. We will never know what would have happened if this or other scenario played out. But Novak held very well and was better when he needed it, that's it. *it might seems to be like an upset for Federer fans but the (hard) truth is Djokovic dominated the match in all the crucial moments.* No player should win a match that they actually don't win.... *what matters is who plays the critical points better, here is where greatness is defined.* No argument here claiming Fed should've won has any real substance behind it.

Thing is Federer plays the same no matter what the point is, that is why he almost never loses a set other than 6-4 or 7-6 or 7-5. That shows ultimate mental strength. Downside is he doesn't play extra hard when is on match point or down match point. It's just another point to him. So he has lost a few from match point and won a few from being down match point. The best tennis players win only 54% of points, 1-2% more than the average top 50 player. That's how small of a gap there is between greatness and average. Djokovic on the other hand has many major downs in most matches. Like he completely mentally and physically seems to go down. Then he recovers and plays extra well. Yes its outstanding mental strength also, but just not as consistent. So on mental strength, I would rate Federer much better. He's a good example to all of us to give our best no matter what, whether life is good or bad.

That indoor ATP final court is so fast, hence why Federer is nearly unbeatable there (and Nadal has never won there). Rewind back to 2000 when many of the clay court players threatened to boycott Wimbledon because Wimbledon did their own seedings for the tournament. There became a massive fear that clay court type players might quit playing both grass and even hardcourt tourneys. Ever since that time, they've been trying to slow down the courts as much as possible. If they hadn't, Federer would have 30+ Grand Slam titles. hehe

The most overlooked aspect of these rivalries is how significantly the court surface affected them. The ATP World Tour Finals were, and continue to be, played on low bouncing, fast hardcourts that were more suited to Roger's game. It's very simple...the faster and lower-bouncing the court, whether hardcourt or grass, the better Roger played, period. If all the hardcourts on the ATP tour were like this one, Roger would have retired with about 40 major titles. I think Novak's game is simply more effective on a greater variety of surface conditions than Roger's was. That's why these "who's the greatest of all time" conjectures are, I believe, too simplistic. It's apples and oranges because of the variation in court surfaces. Novak is the greatest on slower hardcourts. Roger is the greatest on faster hardcourts and grass. Rafa is the greatest on clay.

After that huge upset at SW19, RF was obviously going to come into this match all fired up!

When his back was good and rested, Federer was the best tennis player in the world. And he did all this with a single handed backhand, considering that there are just 3 players in the top 30 right now with a single handed backhand.

for the time being there are 4 :) Tsitsi, Musetti, Shapo, Dimitrov. Hopefully Thiem and Stan join soon.

Post 2014, every time Fed won over Djokovic, Fed employed hyper-aggressive tactics, with a touch of Djokovic not having the best day. I just wish Federer would had gone for very aggressive tactics every time even if it didn't work. Federer in 2015 Dubai, 2015 Cincinnati, and in ATF in 2015 and 2019 were so aggressive.
