Experts from Poland, Ukraine, and Lithuania joined Russian opposition activists to discuss the impact of the war in Ukraine on Central Europe. Our host Jan Darasz was on the ground and had the unique opportunity to talk to a person who knows a thing or two about strategy: Garry Kasparov, Chess Grandmaster and Chairman of the Renew Democracy Initiative.

Wonderful conversation. Without rancor, the great Kasparov highlights the •failure• of Western nations to understand the desperation of Russia, causing them to fall back of, essentials, "appeasement" or "constructive engagement" - good intentions, but not in dealing with despotism & ruthlessness. Significantly, he reminds us that Putin's hero is not Peter the Great (an internationalist) but Ivan the Terrible (an imperialist).
@viveviveka2651

I have been wondering which policy-makers and policy-making influencers listen to Kasparov, and whose views he is influencing. It's very complex, though, because someone (just to take one such example among many others) can listen to a video or read some of his writings and then process it in his or her or their own way, and then put the resultant viewpoint into their own words (which often happens), without necessarily attributing them to Kasparov, and then go on to say something in a cabinet meeting, or to the President, or to a leading military strategist or to someone at an influential thinktank, or to an influential writer or thinker who is writing something in the WSJ, which is then read by a number of people who go on to share the takeaways (from Kasparov, directly or indirectly) in their own ways. He certainly deserves to be listened to and read by people involved in making decisions related to Ukraine strategy and overall goals and outcomes in the situation. Personally, I think the Russia-Iran nexus is recognized as a serious emerging threat - to Israel. It is also a threat in other ways, not just to Israel; but the threat to Israel is in itself a huge red flag, and an incentive to be proactive in stopping the emerging threat, and preventing it early before it becomes stronger. The Israelis in particular have recognized the importance of stopping emerging threats before they get out of control - a lesson they learned all too well from the rise of Hitler, the Nazis and the holocaust. There are those in the US who also see this. There are also other potential threats long-term to the security of the United States. If the Russian Federation (/Empire) can be further broken up and reduced, it will pose less of a threat in the long run to the US and to Russia's European neighbors, and lower the threat of nuclear war. The ending of the Russian Empire is a rational goal.

If they did, there would have been NATO intervention and WE ( as in you and me if served aswell) would have a "chance" of being drafted. And ofc our cities could have been targeted by russian missiles. If you are not ready to risk that, dont say our leaders should have listened to Kasparov. He was in the absolute minority with his stance on how to handle this invasion. He is "just" an exile russian. It's not his european cities that would be at risk but ours.

And then of course the growing anger of people wishing for freedom and opportunities that they've seen more and more in content smuggled from west. Thank you, Mr. Kasparov, for you time, this interview, and your wisdom. I completely agree with you. Right now and post-war, could be a perfect window of opportunity for russia to create a better future for itself. Reconciliation and huge change is key to that, as we all know from our post-second world war experiences as independent nations. Much better than making our own populations unwelcome across the globe, as russia is fast becoming because of its war on Ukraine. Many thanks also, to Mr. Darasz. This was a pleasantly relaxed interview, and your questioning technique is graceful and respective of your guest; allowing time for a comprehensive response.

I really appreciated the fact that Kasparov spoke openly about the differences between mentalities of the areas that were exposed to democratic principles versus the ones that were still under the spell of the Golden Horde cultural undercurrents. It is an extremely important point that often goes unspoken in convos, usually because the historian/politician is not SEEING the course of history through the eyes of Russians/ex-Soviet citizens. As he said, Russians see themselves as "European", but there's an almost unconscious drive that has been there since the original foundations of the original Rurik dynasty and hardened under the Mongol Yoke. Fascinating stuff.

I believe China will forego any moves on Taiwan for the time being and basically wait out for their opportunity for territory in Russia. That will be a much bigger prize. But it's not even as much about that, it's doable, they need the resources, and it's in line with their long term goals. They could eventually actually become an “Arctic power” and the long term play would be to control the shipping lanes. Yes, I know how far out and off this may seem/sound, but it's not. The thing is, most of the places that would be in their sights, they're very wary of China even if they're their neighbor and do business with them. All the surrounding countries are wary of China.

All the man in the street interviews in Moscow/St Petersburg I’ve seen show folks who back Putin but consider themselves European and don’t particularly want to go with China. Some Russians ARE a wee bit racist too, so there’s that. The further east one goes in Russia, though, the more attitudes toward China may differ as Kasparov hinted.

@@war-painter Well I know for sure the Kazakhstan people and gov are very aware their people do not trust China. Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan the gov has been more open, and there's a decent footing of power players/businesses who have taken the money and are pushing Chinese agendas. The Mongolian people too are very wary of China. And in fact the US and other Western countries especially over the last year have started making overtures for Western investment. And I think overall there have been pretty positive experiences. Because most of these places are only pro Chinese on the surface for lack of alternatives. Since this war, new doors are within sight of opening to them. This was never something that could even be dreamed of before, it just wasn't something anyone could ever imagine. Due to the war and new horizons being within the realm of reality, there's been ever increasing softening of sentiment towards the West, especially as truths continue to be revealed. If they have a choice, many will choose Western dollars over Chinese all day long. I think this is of particular concern now to the US, bc for better or worse Russia was the check on China in those parts. But as I said new doors are opening and I hope that we see that come to fruition as this part of the world has been pretty neglected, just treated as buffer states. I also think the Russian refugees are helping bridge some of this gap as many had business connections with the West. So you have many Russian people who are educated, business owners, entrepreneurs etc, who are building new lives. And these countries are benefitting. And yes Russians are very wary of China lol.... one more time very wary, wary.
