The Wild West Extravaganza

Described in the papers of his day as a holy terror and one of the greatest manhunters to ever grace Indian Territory, Bass Reeves served as a deputy U.S. Marshal for over three decades; routinely traveling into no man’s land and returning with wagonloads of prisoners. With over 3,000 arrests and over a dozen kills to his name, Reeves was not only one of the most effective lawmen of the Old West but also one of the most deadly. But who was Bass Reeves really? What kind of man was he? Where’d he come from? How does a mere mortal grow such an amazing mustache? And did he really inspire the Lone Ranger? This is part 2 and the final installment of the Bass Reeves series. Link below for episode 1. Today we cover Reeves’ hunt for Ned Christie, his transition from frontier marshal to town police, and whether Bass truly inspired the Lone Ranger. #history #wildwest #lawman

The more I learn about Ole Bass Reeves the more I am in awe of his life. Life was seriously hard back then, add that your also black and a lawman, makes it even more fascinating. Add to that he had ten children, that in itself to me is mind boggling.

Hard times for sure
@edreynolds8721
@edreynolds8721 5 місяців тому
Hard times definitely but the more videos I watch and the more I research the more I'm discovering that yeah it was bad for Black people back then but not as bad as they told us. Look at Bass for example and that proves that once they proved themselves and weren't going to take $h1t from anyone, they got respect that no one could take from them and probably wouldn't even think of trying. When I say it wasn't that bad I'm not dismissing slavery or racism but the more I look into it the more Black people I find from back then who had major important positions and high up jobs like Bass. They were cowboys and lawmen just like anyone else but because of what they went through to get those positions no one was going to disrespect or challenge them and everyone knew they were the toughest. Except for criminals who challenge everyone regardless of anything I highly doubt anyone disrespected them at least to their faces. And I want to know why these Black Americans were never taught about in schools when we were growing up. Slavery yes and it should but they never taught us about The Buffalo Soldiers, the Black Confederates and land owners who also owned slaves themselves or the Black lawmen. They glance over the Buffalo Soldiers and the underground railroad but concentrate on the civil war and all the white soldiers. I think if they taught use about all these people when I was in school we'd be better off and have a better understanding of our country than we do. How do you leave these Americans out of American history? Now we have a generation or 2 or 3 agreeing with Binladen. Teaching us about people like Bass may have actually given the Black community a better chance at success because if he isn't a man everyone can look up to I don't know who is. I don't understand how everyone has the story all wrong about Uncle Tom who actually helped slaves escape the South. Everyone calls you a Tom inferring your a sellout when the man and his cabin or house was a stopping point to get supplies and directions for routes to avoid capture. I don't know..... That doesn't sound like a sellout to me.

@@edreynolds8721 You bring up a lot of good points, personally I would have been fascinated with Bass Reeves history. Yes, he was a badass with his background and his 3000 arrests. Going back to shows like Gunsmoke, Rawhide, Wanted Dead or Alive, etc. Reeves would have been an icon in the western films a long time ago. On top of that a real-life character. The good news is that he is deservedly being acknowledged and heralded. Thanks for the reply.
@edreynolds8721
@edreynolds8721 5 місяців тому
@bobbrown9158 hey, I'm not "woke" but I call it like it is and they shouldn't have been left out of history class. Like I said before, it may have given the Black community a better outlook on everything and certainly gave them better role models. We have to look at the good and bad in every aspect of life but when we're all only taught about people like Free Way Ricky Ross and I'm not talking about the rapper and Pablo Escobar and all the other cartels it influences everyone's culture but specific cultures in particular which I think contributed to the current state we're in. Who's the only Black America's we learned about in school? MLK and Uncle Tom and they got the whole story or taught us the whole story wrong on Tom. They never taught us about any other Black Americans good or bad and Bass would've been a great American to learn about and look up to. Come to think of it, did they teach us about any American lawmen? I don't remember any of them being talked about at all. The only reason I know about Wyatt Earp is from the movies they made. They also never teach us about the prison camps both sides had during the Civil War. I've only seen one movie on that subject as well. Andersonville, and everyone should watch that movie. We also shouldn't be removing any statutes of anyone because just like Andersonville they show, in a way at least the savagery of man and how brother will turn against brother even when they're on the same side in a prison camp. Sorry for rambling on but I think these things need to be said and everyone should learn our complete history good and bad.

they did a low low budget movie on bass reeves called "hell on the border" but there was one outstanding scene where the badman n his gang bass reeves was after crossed paths with frank n jesse james n also a lady.. they were digging a grave.. don't know who the lady's character was portraying but she was scary bad! her interaction was brief but an edge of your seat highlight.. they need to do a very expansive quality story for bass reeves.. no soap box series.. a deserving tribute for the best lawman ever!

Why all the apologies for speaking about the issue of race. It's completely relevant and historically true. One of the consequences of the reluctance to speak on the real history of race in our country hurts us as a whole and protects fragile minded people who need to be informed. To speak on the relevant issue is not the same as inappropriately shoving the issue on people. Thanks for the podcast very interesting.

Like to see a movie made of this legendary law man, if they (Hollywood) could just stay to his achievements and leave the polish off, This man is incredible, After reading my Great Great grandfather diary of how it was, Reconstruction after the Civil War soldiers or law man it had additional risk, Not uncommon to find a Sherrif and deputy ambush by who knows by whom, or swinging from a tree limb. after the Civil War men made the way back up north to the Union States, some accounts have stated 4000 men were Bush wack, like Johnny Cash sings the ( 🎶 Gun fighters' last ballet🎵 ), it's was a very hard time.

My dad has lived right outside of hico and it's a really neat town, Josh is right about the food at that restaurant it's pretty good. I personally think some locals are invested in the bushy bill tale as they love the town and it adds to its uniquness to bad you missed the chocolate house by ranglers and the koffee kup kafe now just the koffee kup as the whole kkk thing inspired a name change however they are famous for their pies I recently took a look at the city's web site and it is impressive for such a small town it goes to show how invested the people are who live there in their little town. It is truly worth the stop if your passing Tru

I had a grandfather I never met killed in the line of duty was an elected lawman and coal miner couldn't read or write is in the fallen lawmen memorial in DC and the stories heard from different sources about what he did when confronted with life death situations sounds like a movie character but I believe when faced with that confidence and adrenaline goes a long way on taking a chance to stay alive I can believe what Marshall reeves and my grandfather is storied to have done was mostly true those were hard men

Ruff country back then still is I know those names one name you should look at Zeke Proctor was a Cherokee outlaw that the United States government made a treaty with so he’d quit outlawing lol an later made a US Marshall 😳 here in northeast Oklahoma it’s hard to tell who outlaws are 😂😂😂

they say lone ranger may have been created from him because of his Indian connection n he paid bills with silver dollars also suppose to have rode a pale horse ok i give you that but to me clint eastwood in "hang 'em high" is the rawer more closer model.. he was bringing them in n hangin' judge parker was stringing them up!
