The Linux Foundation Doesn't Use Linux To Create Their Reports

The Linux Foundation was spotted, once again, not using the Linux operating system. In a recent report that they published, you can see that it was created on a Mac using Adobe software. Here are my thoughts on video and in the email below:
MY EMAIL TO THE LINUX FOUNDATION:
info@linuxfoundation.org
To Whom It May Concern:
I am long-time Linux user and supporter of free and open source software, but I am growing increasingly concerned that The Linux Foundation and its employees may not share my values regarding Linux and open source. I noticed that the recently published 2020 Linux Kernel History Report was written on a Mac using Adobe software. I find it strange that anyone associated with The "Linux" Foundation would be using a Mac. And considering that your website states that your organization is committed to providing support for the open source community, I find it even more bizarre that proprietary garbage, such as the software produced by Adobe, is being used to create basic PDF presentations.
Personally, I love Linux and open source. Linux has influenced my life in a positive way, and I want Linux to continue to grow and awareness of Linux to spread. But for this to happen, I think that The Linux Foundation and its employees should play a pivotal role in this growth. And I don't see this happening. I don't think it is crazy to imagine a time when the open source community, which tends to be rather idealistic, becomes so uncomfortable with the directions of the Foundation that many in the community abandon Linux altogether. After all, if The Linux Foundation cares so little about Linux and open source, why should I, as an open source advocate, care about Linux?
Sincerely,
Derek Taylor

In the instructions to install it we were given the option to use a VM, but we were recommended to install it natively... from there I started reading on what the distributions were and ended up running Arch on my laptop and haven't looked back. So far I haven't had any homework I couldn't do on it. For Java we are using Intellij Idea and it works fine using OpenJDK on Arch.

It's important to remember the scope of the Linux foundation. The foundation's primary goal is not the development of the desktop. Their goal is to ensure Linux gets continued development in the areas of server computing and other business applications. Look at top donors to the foundation. it wasn't exactly a secret. That is always what it was about. Making sure it can be maintained for enterprise applications. If you care about free and opened source software, the FSF has always been there.

So I started watching expecting something obvious like using office instead of libreoffice, or something like that- and then you said inDesign. That instantly turned me around on this opinion, because the linux alternative to inDesign is Scribus, and I *hate* Scribus. It is not intuitive, not fast to use, not well laid out. I want to be clear here- I went to school for a design related field, and learned indesign in the course of that education. I despise inDesign. I just despise Scribus even more. The only program I've ever actually enjoyed in a publishing workflow like this is Affinity Publisher, which sadly Affinity have no have plans to move to linux ever (for any of their 3 programs, which are great and are quickly becoming the last anchors to a dual boot setup for me unfortunately). So I think there is a discussion to be had here about computers being tools, and you use the tool that lets you get the job done. If you're trying to argue your existence as a foundation, and your foundation is all about spreading one particular choice, but part of the mission of perpetuating adoption and knowledge about that choice means using some less savory tools for lack of choice because those tools actually allow for the productivity you need- this is a bit of a no brainer for me. If inDesign is in their workflow, it might be a matter of working with printers for events that are used to indesign files and don't want to goof around with open formats when they have some automated process expecting the closed format they've been handed for 25 years to spot color and print a job in 10 minutes instead of 3 hours. It might be a matter of the artists doing the layout work just being more familiar with inDesign, and the learning curve for the alternative tools not allowing them to meet a necessary deadline. Tool vs Ideology. Both have some place in the world, neither is effective if they can't make allowances for one another. I'm all for being critical of an entity like LF on the basis of how they spend money, how wasteful, whether actions and processes further the stated mission, whether policies respect members freedoms and personal liberties or force them to behave as 'sanitized' as their corporate backers, and who pulls financial strings. I think going after them over something like this only makes those issues worse, because it can potentially lead to them still having all this resource and influence and not even outputting anything productive on top of that, existing purely for self perpetuation.
@jezzamobile
@jezzamobile 3 роки тому
If the LF used their funding to help develop projects to the standard they needed them to be for their own use (even if in the short term it meant their use of resources wasn't optimal), that would have been honourable & productive - and in the process, actively made Linux a more attractive proposition for non-users. Something any Linux user would have been able to stand behind - an organisation worth supporting. Unfortunately, this isn't the case, time to cut losses & move on. Invest in projects that deliver.

I've used both InDesign and Scribus. I can totally understand that InDesign is a bit easier to use but Scribus really isn't that bad. I was able to convert all of the layouts I had originally done in InDesign to Scribus with very few issues without compromising the original look.

I am a thirty-year IT engineer that has been working with UNIX since the late 80’s and Linux from the mid-90’s (very early user) and I have never ever used Linux as a desktop. I used to have the privilege of using UNIX workstations over the years and liked them. (DEC/SUN/HPUX) My last UNIX workstation was a Sparc 10 and it gave up the ghost five years ago but it had become a novelty and not a daily driver. But for a very long time I have used Apple’s end user devices and they work very well for me. I am not an Apple worshiper but I am productive with their tools. We also license Microsoft’s O365 suite for business collaboration and document management. Our data centers and cloud based infrastructures are nearly 90% Redhat/Ubuntu servers. (As of today we have approximately 14,000 Linux installations in production across three cloud platforms.) We only run Linux as a server, never as a desktop. The Linux desktop space doesn’t really mean anything to a lot of us. It is the server side of the discussion that pays our bills. About half of our engineers who are our primary datacenter admins run Windows 10. If you have ever had to manage very large scale infrastructures like we do, you often do not have the luxury of being system purists. (Our companies revenues are $3.4Bn annually.)

Michael Martin, that is the most well written and well rounded comment I have seen so far. Being idealistic about desktop Linux is admirable. People seem to forget that big corporations pay for a huge amount of development. Many think everything is free but somebody pays somewhere even if unseen publicly. I believe in using the best tool for the job. Personally I find Linux/Unix make more sense to me than windows but that isn’t to say the latter doesn’t have a place. Also calling all proprietary software garbage is frankly ridiculous and Linux wouldn’t exist if not for Minix! I loved my time with HP-UX, a proprietary Unix which was excellent in many areas. People seem to forget proprietary doesn’t just mean Apple and Microsoft!

I'd love to see a serious competitor to Photoshop and Lightroom on Linux, but it just doesn't exist. And that's not even talking about all the extensions. I don't think it's fair to call that vendor-locked though; it's Adobe not being willing to put the money into developing for such a tiny market share. Let's be honest, the world is not exactly overflowing with creative professionals who really want to work on Linux instead. The software isn't there. So, they don't switch. So Adobe looks at Linux and says "uh, yeah, no customers so not gonna bother". So the software isn't there. So the creative professionals don't switch. It's a catch-22, and the only thing I see that might break it is either, for some reason, the Adobe gods bless everyone with versions of their software for Linux, or somehow, somewhere, someone makes an alternative to it on Linux. Free and open-source though? I _really_ doubt that will happen anytime soon. It takes money to make progress in a short time.

I could be wrong about this as I never really dived into the politics or structure of these kinds of organizations before... being a "relative" noob and all... but I am fairly confident that the FreeBSD Project and the FreeBSD Foundation don't have these kinds of issues. Maybe that's due to a smaller community, I don't know. I've only "dabbled" in Linux here and there... but I started that dabbling during the transition from kernel 2.2 to 2.4. Before this year, I tried a version of BSD (I think it was NetBSD abound the time it became a thing) all of ONCE, for about 30 minutes. That was almost 20 years ago. Now with all the changes in tech and software and everything, and my growing awareness of alternatives to the software that has kept me tethered to Windows, I am looking to actually dive right in and finally make the switch. Not on this machine of course as it's dying a slow and painful death of electrical faults, but my next machine if I can ever afford a new machine lol. So I dove in with VMs for the time being and decided to do research on whatever sparked my interest relating to Linux. I was surprised to find it even more diverse (perhaps fractured) than it ever had been. It was honestly rather overwhelming a bit confusing and even a bit intimidating. But in my searching for info thru youtube videos, something started to creep into the search results... FreeBSD. Predictably, the first videos to slip into the results were about things like how FreeBSD is "not a Linux distro" and the like. I can see where there is confusion enough to warrant those types of videos though. They do, after all, share a common ancestor in UNIX. I collectively call them all *nix, but that's just a personal quirk of mine. I feel like in the 90s a race was started... with Linux as the hare and FreeBSD as the tortoise. I won't deny that FreeBSD has apparently learned a lot from watching the Linux community though. From what I can tell of FreeBSD, if you can think of a software you like in Linux... "it's also available for FreeBSD." Also, apparently, if you somehow find something not available, or the version is too old for your liking, there is a Linux compatibility layer (I jokingly call it "LINE") that can supposedly run Linux software at very near-native performance, and in some cases, even better. That part I don't have any experience with because I haven't had need to use it or learn it yet. Sorry, I honestly didn't mean to ramble. My point for all of that tho is rather simple. The more I learned about the numerous available alternatives out there that will let me finally make the jump away from Windows, the more appealing FreeBSD looks. Everything about it just looks cleaner, saner, and feels more inviting to me. Maybe it's more "Stable" and not bleeding edge... maybe that makes it a bit boring to some people... but lately, with all the issues I've been having with my computer and Windows... a bit of boring sounds nice and relaxing. I feel like I could just install it, get it customized how I like it, and just... let it be. It will just work for me rather than me working for it. What are your thoughts?
@christophmeyer2693
@christophmeyer2693 3 роки тому
FreeBSD is suited for servers, for Desktop it's a joke. It's the complete opposite of being intuitive. There is not even a graphical tool to select your Wi-Fi and also changing the keyboard layout in the Desktop Environment to something else than US Layout is very confusing. And many more things.
@little-wytch
@little-wytch 3 роки тому
@@christophmeyer2693 There are tools for selecting your wifi, it's just that the one (admittedly severe) primary failing of FreeBSD is limited support of wifi. That is the only reason I'm not actually running it as an OS right now, because I finally got a new laptop and it has an ax wifi chip. I do know that they are working on drivers for this particular card tho, and so I suspect it will be supported in 13.1. That said, Desktop FreeBSD is no more of a joke than Arch. You install the base system, you install xorg, a login manager, and a DE or WM, you build up the system just like you do in Arch, and just like Arch it involves a bit of reading and research to do properly. In a lot of ways, Arch is very comparable in the way you install and build a system with FreeBDS. Minimal install, build it up how you like without bloat, read thru the great documentation (Arch Wiki or FreeBSD Handbook) need something not in the repo... AUR for Arch or the ports system of FreeBSD. One lagging area (in this case less variety of wifi) does not make it bad or "a joke" for desktop use.

hi @Normie. Your comment that "Linux is free if your time is worthless", is the best thing i read here!!! I am doing a personal project (hoping to make some companies interested in what i'm trying to do) at the moment: how to be productive with ubuntu as your only operating system, covering all aspects, backup and secure your work, your OS, migrate and make portable to other machines, with tools like rsync scripts, live persistence and a portable bootloader, so you don't care about grub, network with remote desktop, over ssh with X tunneling, so you don't care about screen resolution difference between different machines, how to improve font rendering in all applications and the list goes on and on, in order to be able to be productive with ubuntu, while doing most of your os managment from the terminal. It has taken me 9 months so far, and i'm not done yet!! So yeah, linux is not free. You have to spent (invest) a lot of time to learn stuff. Investments are risky, you're never sure if they'll pay off (if these will prove to be skills i can sell to somebody), but the driving force that is moving me along this road, is the wish to be able to stand above the crowd, doing things most people don't understand, never heard of! Btw, just before i started my project, i took an LF course "introduction to linux" for 100 euros. It's something that looks good in my cv, and i don't feel that it was overpriced.

You may be able to get by using open source alternatives if you work for yourself (and don't mind using inferior products to get your work done) but you're not getting a job in the digital creative industry without using adobe.
