@profd65

It doesn't even slightly suck. It was only absurdly accurate, totally uncharacteristic shooting that kept UCLA in the game. UCLA was shooting like they had Steph Curry playing every position. If UCLA had shot the way they normally do, they would have lost by 10+ points. UCLA was a ten loss team that really didn't even deserve to be there. Sorry to be rude, but I'm reading sore loser comments all over the place, and I'm done being nice.

An incredible game from start to finish. I'm a UCLA Alum, but having lived through the Ben Howland era, I'm not crazy about the slow, plodding, time-draining half-court offense. I'm also not crazy about the lack of aggressiveness in transition. But as the game progressed I realized that any team that tried to get into a track meet vs. Gonzaga got annihilated. Going slow and steady and relying on Juzang isos was UCLA's way to minimize mistakes and put Gonzaga's lightning quickness in check. As a GSW fan and becoming enamored with free-flowing ball movement, it was a revelation to see UCLA go in the complete opposite direction, and take the #1 team in the nation to its absolute limit in the process.
@bballbreakdown
@bballbreakdown 3 роки тому
It’s an old trope that the underdog needs to slow it down and limit possessions. That just delays the blow out til the 2nd half. Playing unaggressive plays right into Gonzaga’s hands. Cronin should spend less time on defense and more time on offense IMO

how is the ball not on the basket between 7:24 - 7:26? a. Basket interference occurs when a player: 1. Touches the ball or any part of the basket while the ball is on or within the basket; 2. Touches the ball while any part of it is within the cylinder that has the ring as its lower base; 3. Reaches through the basket from below and touches the ball before it enters the cylinder; 4. Pulls down a movable ring so that it contacts the ball before the ring returns to its original position, and 5. Causes the basket or backboard to vibrate when the ball is on or within the basket or the backboard and/or is on or in the cylinder. To me that #4 and #1 seem to be broken in the rule. The basketball was pulled down before the shot attempt and did not return to the original position he is still holding the net while the ball is touching the rim for a second, unless it has to be over the cylinder like it is implied in the video. I do see that it is impossible to see in real time, but I think the ref here has got the rule wrong or interpreting only part of the rule. I do know that the ball had zero chance to get in, but I know for goal tending calls, even if the ball doesn't seem like it will go in, a goal tend will still be called.

Just shut your yap. Crying about the officiating--what a baby. UCLA was a ten loss team that didn't even deserve to be in the Final Four--they're a bunch of mediocre try-hards. The only reason UCLA stayed close in this game was by slowing the tempo way down, and shooting the ball with absurd, totally uncharacteristic accuracy. UCLA shot almost 50% from three point range--that's fucking preposterous, they aren't nearly that good. If they had shot the ball the way they normally do, they would have lost by at least ten points. In a seven game series, Gonzaga sweeps UCLA or wins 4-1, and you can bank on it.

What gets lost in the incredible Gonzaga win is Suggs blocking Riley over the rim cleanly, then getting the rebound, then flying down the court like a bullet-train then making an in-stride full speed incredible half-court bounce pass ,with 4 UCLA players amazingly back on defense already, to Timme for the slam dunk in traffic. Watch the replay of that, and tell me that wasn't the 2nd best play of the entire tournament !!? So much was happening, just listen to the announcers, you'll hear one of them say (and I think it was Grant Hill), "ohh what an amazing bounce pass". You could do a segment of a podcast just on that one amazing sequence. I'm not a fan of either team, just an avid basketball fan.

If you’re about to jump for a rebound or to take control of the ball, both feet need to be inbounds before the jump. If one is stepping out before you jumped, it’s a violation. That should be applied here and this is a missed call.

You only need 1 foot in inbounds to legally get the ball. Plus, Chip is a referee, I don't think you're more knowledgeable than him in analyzing replays.

Where is that in the book? Rule 4, Sect 23, Art 1&2 (the definition for player position) state that a player is considered inbound if his current (or last, if in mid air) contact with the floor is/was inbounds. So you are inbounds as soon as any part of your body touches the court inbounds, as long as you aren't simultaneously out of bounds (i.e., if you're straddling the line, you're still out). Rule 9, Sect 3, Art 1 is the rule about touching the ball when you return to the court. It only says that the player must be inbounds (as per above) before they touch the ball. Nowhere does it say anything about an extra requirement for both feet to be touching the ground inbounds. It does mention not being the first player to touch, but the video explains why that doesn't apply, because the player in question didn't leave 'of his own volition.' Unless you can find some line of text that I missed, I think you are just misremembering the rules. Feel free to look: www.ncaapublications.com/p-4613-2020-21-ncaa-mens-basketball-rules-and-interpretations.aspx

Loved this video Nick! Have to say though, wish you would have gotten his opinion on Riley’s “flagerent.” In real time those guys are just battling down low. A foul, yes, but I don’t think that was flagerent, in that point of the game ucla found themselves down 7. Ucla like many of Gonzaga’s opponents, could have easily found themselves down 15 in a blink of an eye. I think those 2 flagerent free throws were huge during that specific point of the game to be honest

No one will say it but Suggs did foul Riley on the blocked shot. It was evident when they replayed it showing it from the behind the backboard angle. Suggs did get Riley on the arm.

Hi Nina. I appreciate you sharing your perspective. You’re absolutely right about Suggs contacting Riley on the arm. However, when ruling on plays like this, where there are multiple points of contact, the officials must determine if the contact is Incidental or Illegal. If a player blocks a shot prior to marginally contacting the opponents arm, then that arm contact would be ruled as Incidental. This play is very close, but to me it appears that Suggs contacted the ball just prior to the arm to arm contact. That’s why I would’ve ruled this arm contact to be incidental to the blocked shot, and why I support the No-Call by the officials on the court. I completely understand how some people might not see it that way, but it’s just my perspective. Hope that helps. Either way. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the play. 🙌

I think they definitely should have called a foul on that final play in regulation. From the ball handlers perspective, that's just a contest, not the defending taking a charge.

My apologies if my analysis appeared biased toward one team or the other, in any way. That certainly wasn’t my intention, as I do not have a preference who wins or loses any game. My bias is toward the NCAAM rules. I simply enjoy watching good basketball, and both these amazing teams certainly provided us with a classic! I’m sure I could’ve provided analysis on plenty of plays that the officials got right, which favored UCLA, but I only commented on the plays I was given, and tried to provide the applicable NCAAM rules reference for every single play. I hope some found it helpful. 👍
@jordandwiggins1026
@jordandwiggins1026 3 роки тому
Rules are rules. Just because the rules favored one team, that doesn’t mean there’s bias going on. You can’t change the rules just to give an equal amount of calls to both teams if the calls fairly shouldn’t be called equally for both teams.

@@jcclark1515 Is the forearm part of the ball too? gifs.com/gif/suggsfoul-k8962X
@jcclark1515
@jcclark1515 3 роки тому
@@jrp7890 Thanks for the reply. Great point, and one that I’ve seen others make in the comments as well. The forearm is definitely not part of the ball. I wish I would’ve addressed this in the breakdown. I should’ve anticipated that many would have a question about this. What’s incredibly challenging about ruling on contested plays at the rim, at game speed, is that the Trail & Center officials must determine whether any contact up top is Illegal or Incidental. On this particular play, they first must determine if Suggs (who is approaching from behind) has a “reasonable chance to play the ball without illegally contacting” Riley (NCAAM 4-21.6). In my opinion, he does have a reasonable chance. Then, officials must rule (at game speed) whether Suggs contacted Riley’s forearm first, or contacted the ball prior to contacting the forearm. • Obviously, if he only contacted the arm, then it would be a foul. • If he contacted the arm prior to contacting the ball, then it would also be illegal contact, since that contact would’ve “hindered the opponent from participating in a normal offensive movement”(NCAAM 4-21.3) •But if he contacts the ball prior to contacting the arm, then it is ruled a legally blocked shot, and the subsequent marginal contact to the arm shall be ruled as Incidental Contact. Incredibly close play. It’s so close that some will look at in slow-mo and think he got the arm first, while others will see him touch the ball first. In the breakdown, I should not have said it was a “very clean block”. That implies that it should be obvious to everyone that it was a legal play. I should’ve said that it is close, but that I believe it’s a legally blocked shot, and that the contact to the arm is incidental to the blocked shot. I support the No-call on that play, and believe it is supported by rule, but I can understand how some folks might not see it the same way. Hope that helps. And thanks again for the reply. Have a great day Jeffrey. 👍

Too crucial of a moment to call a travel here, even tho it’s technically a travel” Charge call for the last play in regulation in a tied game “You gotta call a charge here” Could you bring any one more biased? Also, nice job showing the jaques travel while not showing a single one of the bs calls against UCLA.
