Except the crusaders had to fight to enter the city, Saladin got it though negotiations. War "etiquette" was always that mercy would be granted to those who surrendered, but if the defenders fought till the end nothing would stop the end of the attackers. The christians had to pay ransom to get out, and quite a few couldn't and were subsequently enslaved. He certainly treated them very fairly for the times, but don't wash away the unsavory parts of the whole thing.

Muslims were just another group that invaded Spain, even when they conquered most of the Iberian peninsula it was under Visigothic control for three centuries prior to their arrival. The harsh reality is that a lot of people from the native population in modern day Spain accepted Islam. A large influx of Jews also settled into the area as well escaping persecution in other parts of Europe. By the time the Reconquista took place, many of the people expelled from Spain likely had lived there for generations before the Muslims even invaded. Its not as black and white as people like to make it seem.
