I would definitely pay for an HD remake of the game if you ever get the chance to finish it. Even as it is, it looks amazing and I would love to see more.

How can you improve on the real thing though? The original was done by photographing real clay.

this isn't hd claymation/sprites, it's all 3D. He made shaders that look like clay with normal map, i presume

^ All 3D, all real time. I may have needed to play with the camera a little bit to reveal that, but I tried to stay true to the original as much as I could.

What I hate when people mention 3d, is that people assume making it OBVIOUSLY 3d is the end result. But really, the fact is 'all real-time', gives a more polished, unified look to how the world reacts to each other. Keep that camera static and let the world interact with itself. The way the shadows are casted, the way light bounces, etc. I'm tired of the industry relying so much on making 3d obvious isntead of perfecting the aesthetics. I want point and click adventures that stay static but render everything 3d. Camera movement can easily make something look fake. Because natural we want the camera to match the way our head moves. When it moves out of sync, it feels...imperfect (though this effect works best with "found footage" styles). Nonetheless, great work Ravenok. You did what I attempted before UE4, but never had time for when the industry got access. :)

No it’s not. Just opening the window in the first room it appears less atmospheric or creepy as the original. This one is too well lit.

Because this is all digital instead of actual clay, it lost that charm the original had. It's art style is closer to Armikrog rather than Neverhood

@@Seaoflife. Licensing clusterfuck meaning no one who really could has the rights to do so that combined with issues on modern operating systems meaning it would need to be updated

@@Seaoflife. The Neverhood is a game from 1996, it works on Windows 95 and uses some archaic DirectX solutions... and what is the biggest problem - EA doesn't care about this game but has a rights for it.

Mithguar probably, they can’t remake original Neverhood and Skullmonkeys because EA have copyright of this games since 1998 (?) => this is why Armikrog doesn’t have original characters from the first game.

Maybe the original tapes were in low quality themselves.

There was no original tapes, it was done on a consumer grade digital camera from the mid 90s with a 1.75 MP resolution

I think I've read somewhere that all their equipment (including the real-life model of The Neverhood) was just disposed of after the game was finished. I doubt anyone has the original files or photos

But with the same attitude! and hopefully it's enough. Things are going well so far :) I hope you find the archive useful despite the horrible curation (nonexistent actually). I initially planned on adding a bunch of timestamps and add highlight videos, but this proved too much together with development work and life stuff. But at least it's all there, all un-cut, so everyone can see what it looks like when it's not sped up x1000.

I tried to include a brief summary of what's happening in each episode to make it easier to predict what's in there, since it's all raw streams and hard to watch in full. I agree. The licensing of the neverhood's a tricky one though so I don't think it'll ever happen. When I made this it was owned by EA and probably long forgotten under a pile of other lost franchises. I tried to get in touch at the time, but nothing worked out from it.

That'll be a record :) Honestly I'd recommend sticking to parts you're interested in (I wish I'd have some way to map out the content better, but for now try to use titles and descriptions). Thanks for the compliments! Glad you liked it and happy to see this is still being passed around. Yep, it's all completely rebuilt from scratch using UE4 and 3D, rendered in real time. I realize today that this has not been obvious enough to people who've seen this. And yes, both Doug and the nice folks at Pencil Test Studios have given their 'subtle nods', which was an exciting moment. :)

Step 1 is getting permission to actually sell it after. Step 2 is raising funds and raising the team. Don't know which one is harder. :)

Sharp! Now that's dedication. Yes, there are a few things missing, and some bugs. Some due to bad methods I utilized due to lack of familiarity with UE4 (and only getting started as a programmer), but some due to other limitations. If you look a bit more, you'll find some other things, such as a missing "effect" animation when the hammer hits, and more :)

Nevertheless, this is the best reincarnation in other engine. Have You received a notification from EA or former devs?

Had a sort of shout out from some of the original devs, but no word from EA.
