The New Financial Geopolitics: How long can the US keep going as the Lender, Leader, and Reserve Asset of Last Resort?
Panel 1: How Long Can the US Keep Going? Contending Perspectives
Is the US the leader, “Lender and Asset Issuer” of last resort, or an accident waiting to happen? How would we know?
Panelists: Sylvia Maxfield (Providence College) and Iain Hardie (University of Edinburgh), Dan Drezner (Tufts University), Megan Greene (Manulife Asset Management), Puneet Bhasin (Brown University)
______________________________
The current global financial order, which was placed into sharp focus by the swap lines initiated by the US Federal Reserve during the 2008 financial crisis, is an American order. Despite generating trillions of debt and demonstrating a truly dysfunctional politics, the US continues to be the leader, lender, and the preferred asset issuer of last resort for the global economy. But how long can this state of affairs continue?
One school of thought suggests that it can continue indefinitely, given the lack of alternative safe assets, the depth and liquidity of US markets, and the desire of foreign wealth holders to buy safety in the form of US assets. And yet things continue until they don’t. Due either to its own domestic dysfunctions, or to its international entanglements, the ‘barbelling’ of risk that US has been able to play, whereby US investments earn a higher risk premium abroad while foreign investors hold US assets as security for a lesser return may come to an abrupt end sooner than many commentators think. If the US suffers real capital losses on its assets abroad, if the global economy continues ‘long and low’ into negative territory, of if other major players grow tired of America’s dysfunctions, then the dollar order may become less attractive over time, prompting the rise of alternative assets and new institutional arrangements.
This conference seeks to address these topics by answering three questions. First, how stable, if not “anti-fragile’ to use Nassim Taleb’s term of art, is the US order? Second, will the ongoing political crisis and economic recession in the Eurozone, and geopolitical tensions in East Asia, prolong or threaten the US order? Third, is there a new geopolitics emerging underneath this financial system, and if so, what does it look like?

Well you got to understand how much of the US advantage is because of Reserve currency. But acting like a bandit stealing others reserve currency is basically a death warrant to it's reserve currency status. Having seized gold and reserves of iran, Iraq, Lybia, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Russia etc After all this anyone not looking to get out of the dollar stupid. Even if they get say 50% less returns it means they still have 50% wealth not Zero which can happen if US seizes the countrys reserves. Same with investments in US. It would be foolish to even trade in dollars. It's better to trade in their own currency or some other currency or do trade swaps and ensure that US or EU has no access to the trade details. Who would want to give data to US for it's arbitrary sanctions to be applied.

I wonder how many of these people still feel the same today given this article is now very old. The dollar is the worlds FIAT currency and confidence in its long term economy and government stability is significantly weaker. Given the EU is now rumbling for a trade war and the renminbi is by far the most important currency given it provides the majority of worlds goods and hence needs. Ironically the states is it’s biggest buyer of goods, but as nothing is based on gold anymore what is it’s value given it continues to print money causing continuous inflation and devaluation of its strength. Sooner or later we will end up with 3 different nations war ships demanding payment in Gold which nobody believes the states could honour. The final benefit to the states is most countries are in a similar economic position I.e. every bodies housing market is in decline. A global recession/ depression is highly likely. One thing is for sure as a safe haven for other governments reserves the US dollar is not.

They should review this presentation and realise how shit it was. They just think of the private investor criterion. The US never gained its dollar reserve status because of private investors but because of wars and other countries relationships with the US post world war 1 and 2. This is completely missing from their understanding and is not factored in to their analysis. So utterly misunderstanding of what drives/supports the dollar and dollar assets in its proper global geopolitical context.

The is a very simple answer. The dollar will hold its reserve status as long as the other G7 countries want it to be and as long as the US keeps protecting G7 countries militarily. The above has nothing to do with debt in the normal sense like a person or household because the reason why other G7 countries invest in US treasuries is because of the above. As long as this virtuous circle holds then the the dollar remain the most marketable currency, then the US Treasury bond then all other dollar denominated assets. The strength of the US military comes from its people and its natural resources and its innovation. Its people and innovation derive and build military value because of its open culture, stable democracy and rule of law and wiliness to take risks.....oh and because it is an English speaking nation, which is the most widely spoken language internationally, thus enabling or facilitating the flow of people and cultural mix, thus making English speaking countries very attractive to live work and play for non-native English speakers as well as native English speakers. All these things enable the US to be an attractive country for migration and thus its population will grow and is age distribution will be balance (not too many old aged people and not too many young people).

The end of the USD as the global reserve currency is in 2030??
@gargamelandrudmila8078
@gargamelandrudmila8078 Рік тому
@@oneviwatara9384 the G7 pack is stronger than ever due to Russia and in the wings China. The future is uncertain and characters like Trump through it in even more uncertainty but the relationship is enduring. The US on its own could not have executed the oil cap on its own it took the combined jurisdictions under which the global insurance and shipping resides to pull it off. So it is this G7 relationship and the costs-benefit, risks and rewards that sustains them . The Dollar in this c context is a system not a single currency. Using this framework you can see that China does not have such a system and neither does Russia. So when you say the Dollar will end in 2030 you have to say how and motivation to end it given the above framework. Or present a framework that u think models things better and gives you a logical argument for when it will inherently fail by 2030. Otherwise the statement u made is more hope than anything.

@@oneviwatara9384 yes, on the margin we compete, it is for Europe and the other G7 to modify their policy and make reforms as needed to attrack and retain talent and FDI and offer a uniquely European lifestyle and perspective as well as some commonality on our democracy, rule of law, protection of private property etc . I did not say the G7 was a cabal with everyone suck the US's cock. At the values and strategic level we are tighter than ever against our now very clear enemies. The yrs of Obama reset are over. China and Russia spat in our faces when the hand of friendship was ( I.e membership of the WTO in the case of China) given, now they have to swallow our lead. Obedience to God will bring changes we all need. I implore you, seek, listen to His every word and obey it all. Then watch Him show up moving with changes. Choose to believe God and see why it's a great decision. For everyone who thinks or feels God doesn't care, that He is indifferent and or mean etc …. Why is the world as it is, evil everywhere, sickness and death, tyranny and over ruling by government?… People ask where is God and His faithfulness, and His love … in all this evil of the world, where is God and why is evil going on and getting worse? God does judge sin which is evil and if people don't stop sinning they will die for that disobedience,that sin. When God said if you take from that tree you will die He was saying if you disobey, you sin, I will punish that sin because God does punish it, sickness, demons and death. And if you keep sinning I will punish you to the point of death, is that punishment. Sickness is a consequence of sin and it is a judgement God makes upon the people for their sin. All sickness takes its toll on the body and will result in death unless you stop sinning and that brings a reward from God for the righteous decision to stop sinning that brought that illness. Throughout scripture God tells us these things. God does love and there is mercy in His punishment too. He chastises those He loves. His wrath doesn't mean He doesn't love, it doesn't mean there is no mercy, it means He puts His law first and He obeys it first. He punished sin and then punishes sin and so forth and if someone doesn't stop sinning or sins more then that judgment is death just as He said, sin is death. Scripture says we are all responsible for working out our salvation with fear and trembling. Seek scripture, learn who He is and what He said to obey and do it. if you obey Him you live in blessings just like Deuteronomy 28 says and it also says disobedience is curses, that's sickness, demons possibly and again to continue in sin results in death. God told all the details, and paid for us to get out of sin and how we should live and when people don't live righteous then the world looks like it did in the days of Noah, violence, drunkenness and such lovers of self, pleasure and all sin and life apart from God, life in disobedience to God. Why should He bless sin? He punishes it then punishes sin more if someone keeps sinning. Is it tough people die from that choice they make, their sin and lack of seeking God to obey what He said, yes it hurts. How do you think God feels, He loved the world so much He gave His only begotten son and Yeshua died in agony for us to be out of that sin, taking God's wrath upon Himself so how do I think He feels, grieved so grieved but I know from scripture He always obeys what His word says, He never changes and that includes every word He said. Now Yeshua took God's wrath upon Himself for our sin Isaiah 53. We get peace with God and can come before Him to be heard and we get to be cleansed from our iniquities, sin. Just like the lamb sacrifices in the old testament Jesus was that for us a peace offering and forgiveness offering. We get freedom from that sinful past, from that sin and we get our healings because His stripes healed us from the consequences of sin. He gave us a way out. A way to start again out of that wrath. How loving is that God gave us His son who took God's wrath for us out of love. How loving just how loving is our God who made a way for us to be out of that wrath? Wrath we deserved by our sin and continued sin. But God so loved the world He gave us Yeshua. Yeshua gave His life to rise to life for us to give us new life. A new creation to begin again a new life, having been born again. Having received forgiveness for sin and a pardon from God's wrath, that very wrath you talk about. But God gave us a way out of His wrath when Yeshua our lamb paid for our sin. Again how loving is that our way out of God's wrath. Our new life. Our second chance to live rightly before our Holy righteous God our being born again to live right because God planned for us to not all receive His wrath yet His son for everyone, one for everyone and a way out, pardoned and free to live life righteous whole healed delivered, how loving oh so very loving that is. All that is in scripture too. Seek and find, learn who He is and obey and see more of it. Mark 4:24 the more you obey God the more He reveals to you, it means that. Matthew 6:33 live it daily and understand who He is and just how loving He always is and honestly how loved you are will be seen felt and KNOWN too. 💕 May you come to understand Him all your days seeking and finding and growing in the knowledge of God in Yeshua's name 💕 Do you believe in Yeshua as the son of God who died and rose 3 days later? If yes you are saved, receiving eternal life in heaven. If no, call upon Him and believe believe because if you don't choose to believe while alive you will spend eternity in hell, agony. Choose to believe and then seek Him to know Him from scripture. We are each supposed to seek Him, know Him and obey Him. We are Responsible for that each day. Seriously ponder God, believe for salvation and obedience because He is faithful in every way to His word, blessings and curses, healings and deliverance, peace and patience, love and joy. also all the fruit of the spirit, from being in His presence. ❤️ Censorship is against the constitution of the united states, it is illegal to suppress freedom of speech.. God will move because of this law breaking too. You should stop breaking the law, repenting and obey His every word, in Yeshua's name 💕🙏

Will this work in the real world? Do you think people including Christians will cut back the giving and helping to preserve their own lives?

@@clipmaster4119 if the economy works only for the stock market and for the 1 % then you can keep on going only till the wealth conveyor from abroad keeps moving. This is increasingly slowing down thus the 1% percent can't deolve much to the 99%. To make up for the weakness abroad they try to get more from the 99%. Ultimately at some point the common man has not only nothing to give but the social and economic structure at the bottom becomes so dreceipt that it can't function and this can't generate enough taxes. When you can't get money from abroad and can't tax locally you will eventually collapse.

@@70newlife classic communist? Tell me, are your running low on food? is your home heated? looks like its working quite well for you and the majority of people too. Sure maybe you're not a billionaire, but in communism you would find it hard to find food. Communism made everyone poor. capitalism let's those who innovate, succeeded. communism is anti innovation, anti freedom, and essentially it itself is the reason behind its own collapse. and is also the reason why virtually EVERY east bloc country hates Russia and wants to join Nato
