Data packs are a feature in Minecraft that not enough people take full advantage of, and it is also something which many people do not understand. Data packs are often confused with mods. In this video, I explain what data packs are and how they compare to mods, and I can hopefully bring more people into creating data packs.
Check out my new website!
tinyurl.com/timberforge
If you have never tried creating a data pack yourself, please give it a try, you might enjoy adding amazing things into the game, and it is a lot easier than many people think. I have many tutorials which can get you started very quickly.

Check out Cloud Wolf's Tutorials if you haven't already: / @cl0udwolf
If you already create data packs and have friends who don't understand what they are or they confuse them with mods, try to convince them to try making data packs and get more people into this unique side of Minecraft.
Last thing - this video is not meant to discourage people from making mods, but is meant more for encouraging those who are intimidated by the complexities of mod making to first try creating data packs so that more people get into making changes to the game through data packs first, and to get rid of the idea that changing the game by adding your own items, mobs, vehicles, or other things is hard. This is meant for the people like those whom I have talked to who have thought that mods and data packs were the same thing, and therefore wouldn't go near it or even give it a chance.

I know this isn't a tutorial or the next data pack challenge, but I really wanted to make this video just because of the amount of people who didn't know what a data pack was, and there was no video explaining what a data pack was that I could give people without just giving them a tutorial on how to make one. Upcoming videos I have are a continuation of the Let's Code series by making items and weapons from the Mandalorian, and the next data pack challenge video.

I really don't think the modding community is dying. There are ton of mods that are replacing the old non updating mods. Alot of them are even better than their predecessors. Another thing is that people aren't looking it up as much because people already know about modding. Thus, less searches. This happened to minecraft as well

Yea I was gonna say, there probably isn't a lot of NEW people hopping into mods yet, because of the recent resurgance, but once you go modded you CANNOT go back. I have a hard time staying in a vanilla save, but modpacks, especially questing ones, keep my attention a lot more.

It really depends what you want to do. If you are trying to make an big game change, make something epic with huge proportions and complexities, or you are trying to do something which changes the actual way the game works(as in the mechanics as opposed to the content) then do mods. If you are trying to add your own items and mobs and vehicles or more *content*, or maybe if you want to be able to easily play on servers or with friends, data packs may be the way to go.

The nutshell is imagine mods, but it uses already existing vanilla assets, therefore it is the easiest thing to use. Probably my favorite form of mods currently for the fact it is purely vanilla to begin with, which is one reason why I do enjoy minecraft, due to the immense support to things like this.

Datapacks, as they are, are still far more confined than mods. With mods you can create nice looking, clean models, datapacks still aren't there yet. Also the modding community is still going strong and many more are still being created and updated. Also with datapacks you have to download them on each world folder you make, with mods you just put them in the folder and all your world's have them. Overall I still see mods as the future of modifying Minecraft over datapacks.
@TimberForge
@TimberForge 4 роки тому
I think they both will be the future, but I still think data packs have a wider potential audience due to its approachability, and it is still partially held back by the intimidation around them brought over by mods. They are certainly confined compared to mods in terms of capabilities, however I actually see mods having to be installed to a version instead of a world to be a downside, since it is rare for people to have multiple world with the same mods, and I think being able to be used on the most recent versions of minecraft on a server without requiring other players to download anything would outweighs any benefit from it installing to client instead of world. The models in data packs can be clean, if implemented correctly. I will go more into detail in my animated models video for custom mobs when that comes out.

while creation of new mods is down for the various reason stated here is generally correct in my opinion. however the "modpack" scene is really been picking up lately, "feed the beast" and other various connect modpack making groups are all very active on Reddit and discord, the advent of the twitch launcher that supports a very large amount of mods all in one place and new and still developing solutions like "fabric" pave the way for new mod creations to come interesting to think about is that a lot of modpacks tweak the individual mods so much that they for all intents and purposes could be call new mods outright, stuff like getting different energy mods working TOGETHER or tinkers tools which gets individual additions for each pack that gives unique ores that arent in other packs

Love love LOVE fabric. Though its still very fresh in its lifespan (meaning a Substantial Loss in variety of different mods) It has been a true Godsend for the modding community ~ absolutely can't wait to see what great minds can do with the tools in the future. And as a followup to your point on the pack community ~ it really has been booming. FTB and Tech reddits are all VERY healthy. and Cross communication between modpack communities (in my experience) has always been some of the most WELCOMING and insightful people in terms of helping out Noobies to any pack. I can't recommend to people enough ~ to in your time in minecraft try just one modpack. It is such a different experience to vanilla or even just making a mod list yourself. The variety and different playstyles or fantasies you can have in this game through modpacks is incredible. As an added bonus to said fun, It is insanely EASY and quick to install a modpack with things like the ATLauncher, MultiMC, and esspecially Twitch App (when the api is working that is lol) Truly a mind opening experience to how much you can do off just one game engine. Like honestly theirs things from RLCraft which is just RolePlay aspects magic, and death You've got all kinds of Different flavors of SkyBlock, Theyve even got a skyblock with no sky. Just BLOCKS everywhere lol (*stoneblock) And then there's things like Harvest Craft ~ essentially a whole new franchise of gameplay Mashing up Harvest Moon/Stardew valley in minecraft. Don't know what you want? Do some like Crazy Craft, All The mods, or MCEternal Just giant "Kitchen sink" packs fill with a bit of everything. Blows my mind how much it has all grown since the original tekkit classic days lol.

I was looking at making a mod but what I want is to make new biomes so a datapack might be better. But one thing I've noticed is that you can't add your own biomes to the vanilla biomes, you can only overwrite them or make a whole new dimension. What I want mojang to do is make it where a biome is one file, and I can just put it into a datapack and it will generate along with the vanilla biomes. Once something like that happens I'll start making it.

I feel like the modding community is kinda killing its self with the rivalry between forge and fabric. Alot of the newer mods/mod creators use fabric instead of forge even though forge in the bigger platform, and more older mods use it. Just looking through the comments under some new fabric mods it kinda hurts to see how toxic some people are about it. Also, with these new major updates coming out so quickly Mojang is kinda leaving the modding community in the dust, it takes a while for not only the current modding apis to get updated but also the mods themselves. I think if traditional modding is going to be able to stay alive in the future Mojang needs no create a new modding api that gets updated along side the game.

7:22 There is also the Blockbench discord to help with modding, there is also the fact that MCreater itself is a piece of software that makes modding (and also data pack creation) easier by using blockly (a language that's WAY easier to learn than java) to code mod elements, as well as doing other things way quicker (such as setting up gradle, exporting mods, ex), but coding in blockly dose come with the cost that its more limited than coding with java (though still less limited as datapacks), however MCreator dose come with a java code editor (a good one to) so if you you know java or don't want to use blockly (and don't want to deal with its limitations) there's that option. Overall MCreater is very useful if your starting out with modding or useful if you just want to install 1 program then get strait to modding.

@gunman1299
@gunman1299 3 роки тому
@@TimberForge Thats mainly due to the fact that it's easy of use and ease of learning has allowed for edgy children to create bad/generic mods, plus the fact that MCreator's easy to use features (blockly for example) are very limiting, so if you use those features I'd only recommend using MCreator as a learning/education tool for new modders or STEM students, or for people who just want to mess around with modding without learning java. But, it is possible to not use the easy to learn interface at all and just use the intergraded code editor and file explorer. This removes most of the limitations people gripe about, thus it is entirely possible to make a very advanced mod as if you made it on a traditional IDE. Provided you know java of course. Plus the fact that MCreator comes with really good features such as remote workspaces (allows more modders to work on a single project at the same time), automatically sets up gradle within minutes (or even seconds), easy management, importation, and even creation of sounds, textures (static and animated), structures, 3d models, and other resources. But with all of that said, I would still just use MCreator as a learning tool, as setting up a traditional IDE (although hard for new modders) will bring a lot more freedom to the modder.

This is so cool! I want to learn how to make a data pack now lol. Do you think you could make a video on how to make custom mobs?
@TimberForge
@TimberForge 4 роки тому
Awesome! I will eventually, but probably not tooo soon. I can explain the start of one way to do a custom mob though. 1. Choose a “base” mob that has similar movement style to what ur custom mob will do, and preferably targets or attacks in the same way(that is, if you aren’t making your own attacking system, which if you do, also won’t be tooo hard depending on what you are doing) 2. Use mcstacker.net’s summon tab to generate a summon command for a Minecraft mob that you choose as your “base” mob. Change attributes such as health and max health, attack damage, base movement speed, and other stuff like that depending on what behavior you want. Look closely, as many of the attributes are hidden behind other options u will need to press a button to expand. Make sure you give it invisibility status effect for infinite time. Make sure it has a custom entity tag so your commands can identify it, this is important for step 7. 3. Create a custom MODEL using my block bench tutorial, and assign it to any random item. 4. Create another summon command on mcstacker which summons an armorstand that contains your custom item on its head slot with the proper custom model data. The scaling might be off, so you might have to readjust the model in blockbench. Make sure you have a different custom entity tag. 5. Create a basic data pack using my tutorial template. 6. Create a function which contains just two commands: your base mob summon command which you made in step 2, and the command from step 4. 7. In the loop file of the data pack, put one command which teleports all of the armorstand stocks the nearest base mob. Here’s the command: Execute as @e[tag=ArmorstandTagYouMade] at @e[tag=BaseMobTagYouMade] run to @s ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Now if you run the command /function yourpack:yoursummoncommand then it should summon a base mob and the armorstand with the model, and the data pack loop command will keep them together. That’s how I did my duolingo data pack. Adding custom abilities is also something you could add to the mob if you are somehow able to quickly create a custom mob from these typed instructions lol. Also, I just typed this up so I may have forgotten to include something. Join my discord if you have questions, either someone else or I could help you depending on the time and timezone stuff.

1:37 it’s really Mojang and they don’t wanna support mod creators and they’re being stubborn and that’s why the game’s popularity was questioned back in 2017 not that it was ever close to dying but that was the first time since 10 years that Minecraft was questioned as a good game but they don’t understand is that their game is not unique enough to stand by itself, and it needs mods to continue They should encourage people to make them and optimize the game better

1:16 thoughts already. I think a lot of windows PC users but also *nix users have learnt that anything "popular" that you download can have malware or worse viruses. So, unless the game comes with a "mod manager" or some "mainstream" mod manager comes along, no one will get the "mods". although minecraft datapacks are still downloaded, all the contents inside the files will be plain text, no binary data which you don't know what will happen if it sits in your computer. KSP has it's CKAN. TL;DR: Modifications should be simple and fast while being secure, Minecraft devs are never going to make a mod manager (they made datapack manager instead), and the minecraft community can be quite toxic so even with 3rd party mod mangers you can have troubles

Honestly I understand times change for modding community and updates. But modpack creators like me. Want a mod but data packs conflict. Honestly, they should install an option to disable the option to access them.

if minecraft had mod support by default, the popularity of mod dynamics would be much stronger, I don’t think that the popularity of mods has decreased, because mods that existed even in older versions are still supported, even now many users create mods to this day. with all due respect to data packs, but they are limited by what is in the game, not even everything can be recreated, but the number of data packs is growing and evolving significantly

hey guys, also, have you heard of a little bedrock edition thing called addons. They are as convenient to use as datapacks and more powerful (not as powerful as mods but you can replicate someo f the more simple mods with addons)

I know websites such as curseforge to find mods, but I was wondering if there exists something similar for data packs, or where you would recommend finding them?

Planetminecraft has a dagapack section, the data pack center, and also curseforge has data packs under “customizations”.

@nojot0
@nojot0 4 роки тому
Well, I’d argue the modding community is slightly larger than the data pack community. Just check out the new or last updated tab in curseforge. I do think data packs are great, but I don’t think they’ll replace mods until Minecraft adds official mod support. Mods can add hundreds of new items with crazy new features that simply aren’t possible with data packs due to limitations. What data packs can do is incredible, but simply will never reach the level of modding in its current state. Data packs have there place for smaller additions and tweaks, but certainly will struggle to reach the level of the most popular mods. That’s just my opinion though. Well produced video, so give yourself a pat on the back.
@TimberForge
@TimberForge 4 роки тому
I dont think (and dont hope) that data packs will completely replace mods, but I think that it could be the next generations of mods in terms of the youtube popularity and fascination of it, like what we had with mods in 2012-2016? Back then, everyone wanted to download a bunch of little mods to try out and youtubers were showing off many small mods like too much tnt, furniture, mutant creatures, creatures+, and extra food items, many of which can now be done with the more accessible data packs.
@nojot0

@anonymousperson420

Data packs are far more capable than they are given credit for, and are not limited to the command block commands. Personally, as far as I'm concerned, data packs are just "natively supported mods." I say that because really, in the end the only difference is the implementation. Regardless of whether you mod a tool into the game, or include one with a data pack, the user doesn't see a difference. Sure, there a handful of distinctions might on rare occasions encounter, such as needing to download the mod yourself or not to play on a server, but 99% of the interaction between a user and the adjusted materials in the game will be indistinguishable for a user between a mod and a data pack. But most importantly, and most significantly, if a user is looking for something that adds spells to minecraft, it doesn't matter whether it is technically a mod, or a data pack, as long as they can download and put spells into the game, the technicalities of mod vs data pack is just a distraction that makes it harder to find out whether someone has added spells to minecraft. The worst part that makes me actually care however, is that for some, if not many, when you say "you can't mod bedrock" people get a very wrong idea of what that means, because for most people, if they want spells in bedrock, they think it is a mod and therefore assume you can't have spells in bedrock because people say bedrock can't be modded. This basically means that people give up on expecting anything decent from data packs, because they think any significant change, such as adding spells, isn't possible because tjey were told bedrock can't be modded. Even this video really makes it sound like Pixelmon type alterations are beyond the abilities of data packs, which is not the case at all. I seen data packs even do stuff like add turn-based combat with menus. I can't think of any other time in my life that people would deny calling such a radical alteration a mod, except for the minecraft community.

8:04 you know since Mods are harder and harder to maintain like after the year of 2017 before that year. Mojang just had simple pre-built in code and normally general same items throughout the years. So basically what I think is MOD creators basically gave up cause they couldn't adjust the code of the mod programming to the newer versions of the MCs. So what I am guessing what happened is they couldn't modify the code just right with the new commands and entities coming out. I am just a noob basically at programming. So what if the Mod community go back to basic coding and relearn what they learnt & remake the code from scratch to make sure it can still be available for future MCs versions like idk classify future mobs or entities or whatnot under like 1 class....
