@locrianphyrigian3779
@locrianphyrigian3779 9 років тому
lowlowseesee Alright how bout this. Let's use football again. As usual, it's about money: Tom Brady goes down with a torn ACL from a low hit in a sack. Arguably the most popular quarterback, of one of the most popular teams, was gone for a season. The NFL doesn't want to lose money. Next year, crashing into a quarterback's legs are a 15 yard penalty. Wait until a star gets his knee broken in a big fight. You think if Jon Jones or Ronda Rousey got her knee broken from such a low-skill, low-class kick, the UFC wouldn't ban that motherfucker the next day? They would. It's not that the kick is a bad thing, it's that it's bad for the sport, in the grand scheme of things. This is a combat sport. Key word there is "sport". If it were real combat, someone, or both, would die at the end. We want these fighters to be able to continue to fight, because it's unbelivable to watch, and is a beautiful sport. That's why the kick is lame. If someone gets his knee broken just because MMA is a violent sport, that's whatever; but if it's because of a kick DESIGNED (as I allege) to damage the knee, then that's a waste of a talented fighter, and a waste of money for the UFC. That good enough for you. Let's hear your argument.
@lowlowseesee
@lowlowseesee 9 років тому

I think this will only be legal until there is a serious incident. The first time a major fight is stopped because someone ruins their knee from an oblique kick it will be outlawed in the UFC. (You can damage limbs with submissions too - but that's a gradual attack that allows the opponent to tap. A strike doesn't)
@36424567254
@36424567254 8 років тому
+BenRangel things is mma rules already have this: "Engaging in any unsportsmanlike conduct that causes injury to an opponent" listed as a foul. it would be pretty easy to say that this kind of kicks (specially if repeated and with clear intent rather than as a push-back) fall in that category. Of course the non-specific nature of the rule does need some clarifications but it'd be pretty easy to interpet it this way (and i bet as you do that they would if something likes that starts happening).
@BenRangel
@BenRangel 8 років тому
Mikko Finell With subs you have time to tap out. They are designed to make the opponent surrender before being damaged. There is a huge difference between the instant damage of a kick and gradually overextending limbs to make your opponent surrender.
@BenRangel
@BenRangel 8 років тому
Mikko Finell That's part of the essence of fighting. Getting knocked out is an obvious risk everyone accepts. Getting your knee blown out is an idea that upsets even most fighters. Knee kicks are not an essential part of fighting, we could easily live without em since only a small number of fighters perform them.
@36424567254
@36424567254 8 років тому
Mikko Finell the difference is a KO does not end your career, a broken knee often does. Of course repeated strikes to the head do damage but it's a risk fighters are willing to take as it only starts to show in the long run if at all (depending on how often you do get ko'd)
@36424567254
@36424567254 8 років тому

nobody actively tries to inflict brain damage on another person, at least noone in their right minds. to inflict a "limp for the rest of their lives" is the absolute worst mentality to have in something that is,first and foremost, a SPORT
@marcaononymous
@marcaononymous 9 років тому
when there is a K.O., there is brain damage already.
@Daboogiepimp
@Daboogiepimp 9 років тому
you are stupid. MMA is a simulated death match, where the fighters are effectively trying to murder each other. If somebody gets knocked out then that is essentially "I just killed you, if the referee didn't intervene I would have proceeded to kill you when you were unconscious in real life", or if you submit someone in a joint lock, that's the same as death, "I broke your arm, now I can kill you". The purpose in MMA is essentially murder. Any small impact towards the head causes the brain to rattle in the skull causing minor brain damage - even a jab. So MMA by default is guaranteed infliction of brain damage - albeit minor. MMA: Brain damage + body breaking + choking unconscious. Simple as that.
@Daboogiepimp

you're superimposition of ethics in this bloodsport is silly. Brain damage or joint destruction - all the same.
@fritzki1

xeamus very true, and, although one is trying to, ideally, K.O. the other person, this shouldn't result in permanent, major brain damage, no? (Of course, if it happens very often and regularly you will most definitely see the results.) just as, of course, taking a few of these "oblique kicks" to the knee won't leave you limping for the rest of your life, i just had to point out that the idea of actively imposing a permanent physical injury on someone in this context, a sport, is wrong

Rames Khan just as you felt qualified, after reading those two sentences that i wrote, to point out that i am stupid, i will assume, by the overly dramatic swivel that you just produced, that you take yourself way too seriously. you fall under that "at least noone in their right minds" category. i don't know anyone who would "proceed to kill" the opponent if the referee weren't there. go have a snickers and quit with the fake, superficial beastmode mentality.

What truly makes this kick effecting is there's no Shuffle necessary to executed it, and by keeping your foot inverted outwards it makes it a very difficult to turn your hip which keeps you bladed to your opponent.

I think this is ethically wrong for MMA...Playing for permanent damage I think is where I draw the line. If it happens then that's unfortunate. If a guy doesn't tap in my armbar and it breaks at the elbow then that's mostly his own fault. They try and stop a fight once a guy get's KO's or rocked good enough, to prevent damage for life. This has made the sport more tangible/marketable as it's less violent then no hold barred type of pit brawls. To injure for life and attempt to do it often in a fight is wrong. My 2 cents.
@tekk2987
@tekk2987 8 років тому
+Jordan Marshall With that logic then all head strikes should be banned. Just getting hit in the head IS causing permanent damage everytime. And as it accumulates throughout the fighters career, you start seeing the damage. Some are more prone than others of course. Some just get slurred speech...some get parkinsons... This is a sport where its not only your job but your responsibility to avoid damage. The whole body is a weapon and a target. with exceptions like groin areas etc... This will only evolve mma. Fighters will become more creative and better overall. Now just for fun...i take u for a guy who complains in fighting games when someone spams 1 button or 1 move. Instead you could of evolved your own game and became a better player ;)

From Savateour which occasionally usses oblee kicks in sparrings. Well if you still think that the knee injury is worse than brain damage then look upon Gary Goddridge and Muhamad Ali, these are not career ending injuries but life ending, brain is the most important part of the body, oh or maybe you already have brain damage so you don't get it? Grappling is the only nobel way of fighting, any striking is animalistic, and thats said by striker, if the game is to rough for you go to wrestling or BJJ or Judo and you will be able do defend yourself even better in streets and won't get brain damage and hits to the head

Savate from 1900's < is burrowed it from Wingchun 1800s who borrowed it from Taichi style back in the 1600's from Shaolin 495AD. If we go further back it be from the Spring and Autumn period. The French adopted Savate from their time in South East Asia from numerous different martial arts. Read a book.

I think oblique kick leaves you with much more control of the position, you are not owercommiting with this kick + it's decieving. Basically you shouldn't be turning your back towards your opponent. @davidmc5762
@davidmc5762 5 років тому
@Artair i understand but that's what I mean, the technique isn't allowed in kickboxing because you are not allowed to land kicks below the waist so it wouldn't work in kickboxing, regardless of the organisation, same way you can't use elbow shots or clinch in kickboxing.
@davidmc5762
@davidmc5762 5 років тому
@Artair oh my god, kickboxing the martial art does not allow for kicks below the waist. If you are kicking below the waist you are not doing kickboxing you're doing something else or a variation of kickboxing such as K1. Yes my brain cells work, I literally don't understand how I could explain this any simpler. It's like how you can't clinch? or how you can't go to ground in Tae Kwon do? How you can't punch in judo? In the exact same way, you can't kick below the waist in kickboxing.

@scottnoricsson2023
@scottnoricsson2023 8 років тому
and you are absolutely positive - bear in mind that presupposes that you possess the knowledge of every martial art that has existed since the dawn of mankind? In karate, hmm, no. In taekwondo, nope. In Muay Thai, no. In kung fu, perhaps as there are zilllion styles. In Savate, definitely, documented since 1836.
@36424567254
@36424567254 8 років тому
+Srdjan Teofilovic yeah, because as we all know in karate and taekwondo competitions you can kick the legs...oh wait you can't (except kyoukushin rules ofc). In fact this kick is simply does exist in karate, for example (by the way there are possibly as many karate styles as kung-fu ones, though it's true that they usually share a common base.) Truth is, human body is capable of limited movements, specially if we're talking kicks, and we've had thousands of years to come up with basically all of them, so this whole argument is basically pointless...probably all standup martial arts actually have this kick, just like for any other move you might come up with. However since time is limited every style focuses on some moves at the expense of others, so in my opinion the only logical thing would be to "credit" a move (if at all) to the art that focuses on it the most. And in this case, it's probably wing chun (and partly JKD which draws a lot from it) where it's possibly the most common kick. Now i don't know savate well enough to be sure, but i don't recall this being their bread and butter, go-to kick, correct me if i'm wrong here. Ofc if we're talking fighting sports, most don't teach it, for the simple reason that it's not legal in most international rulesets and a top level competitor has no time for banned moves. Hell, even in judo tecniques not allowed in olympic style sparring (there are some, yes) are barely practiced if at all, often enough - and don't let me get started on olympic taekwondo which probably uses 5% of what's actually in taekwondo (yes it does have punches, a huge lot of open hand strikes...EVEN knees and elbows because people are not stupid ofc they know they can hit with them).

I think I speak for allot of people perhaps especially fighters out there when I say I liked Jon Jones up until the point I saw him throw these kicks. In a fight you're there to win you're not out to get your opponent permanent brain damage. Breaking someone's knee and ending their career and ruining their life and the life of their friends and family is not equivalent to knocking someone out and ending the fight like a man, breaking someone's knee would be equivalent to completely ripping someone's ears off. Have you ever even stopped to wonder why almost nobody in the ufc is doing it when it's literally easier than throwing a roundhouse?
