The most shocking scene in Martin Scorsese's The Irishman comes near the end. Spoilers: Mafia hitman Frank Sheeran, played by Robert De Niro, lures his best friend, Jimmy Hoffa, into an empty house. Hoffa realizes that something is wrong and heads for the door. Sheeran draws a gun and shoots Hoffa twice, plants the gun on his body, and flees.
It's an incredible moment, but it's not the scene that shows why Robert De Niro is so incredible. That one comes a few minutes later. As Hoffa's disappearance hits the news, Sheeran decides to call Hoffa's wife, Jo, to make sure she's okay. His goal is to reassure Jo that everything's going to be fine, but as the man who pulled the trigger, he knows that's a lie. Throw in Frank's guilt over the murder, his grief over Hoffa's death, and the pressure of keeping the truth a secret, and he's very close to his breaking point.
The scene that follows has no music, no flashy camera work, and no other actors. It's just De Niro, a telephone, and Jo's hysterical cries. It also happens to be one of the best things that De Niro has ever done.
De Niro's biggest strength as an actor is the way he can say everything without actually saying anything. His characters mumble and stutter. Often, he talks around his lines instead of reciting them.
However, thanks to De Niro's body language, it's easy to derive meaning from his half-finished words and tangential thoughts. That's one of the reasons De Niro was spot-on casting for a young Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II: Marlon Brando, who originated the role, had a similar acting style.
And yet, despite Sheeran's babbling incoherence, it's completely clear what's going on in Frank's mind. Hoffa's death is weighing on him, and while we've seen in the past that Sheeran is an accomplished and skilled liar, the guilt is simply too much for him to bear. It's the perfect example of what makes De Niro's acting so unique and memorable.

I really like the spirit of this channel but please allow me to offer some constructive criticism. To be honest, your efforts at fact checking could be better. For example, Joe Pesci has not “been retired for close to 20 years.” He was featured in 2 films during this period: The Good Shepherd (2006), and Love Ranch (2010), the former directed by none other than De Niro himself. In addition, Pesci was paid for his voice acting talents in the English version of the animated film A Warrior’s Tale (2015). Also, your assertion that DeNiro, while playing the 55 year-old version of Frank Sheeran, “looks almost exactly like he did in Ronin and Meet the Parents” (both those films released over 20 years ago) is HIGHLY CONTESTABLE. I mean, there is no greater fan of Scorsese and De Niro than myself but the de-aging technology was dubious at best. Still, I wholeheartedly applaud their efforts. But come on, a magical restoration of their former youth it was not. Still, all in all, thank you for this tribute to one of the greatest thespians of our time.

The movie was good but in my opinion the digital de-aging destroyed it. The movie is about three hours long and I feel that it would have simply been much more palatable to use different actors for younger scenes, well at least for the first hour of the movie. Though the acting and directing is as great as always, I just can't get over the fact that it doesn't look right. They look like 60 year old guys with 25 year old wives and six year old children... The de-aging should have been used briefly to transition from old to young and make it last about 30 mins max. More of the movie characters story should have been shot in the actual age of actors and have the story somewhat adapt to, it would have worked much better. A collaboration of theses will unfortunately not happen again and it's such a shame that the movie industry is just so obsessed with using digital technology and CGI ect to the point where they've actually become less creative and in this instance ruined such a great occurrence. There should have been more use of prosthetic's, make up, body/stunt doubles, long shots for action and panning in for dialogue. Also then have the whole movie shot on film instead of digital to make it look more seamless, covering up the cracks and flaws which are highly visible in digital recording. We lose so much emotion from the character the digital de-aging, the temperament of the character the'r supposed age just doesn't match the acting throughout the movie. For example, we get so much more emotion and presence from Harvey Keitel and Sebastian Maniscalo despite their screen time being so brief because we get to see their acting upfront instead being edited like a cartoon. If you don't believe me then just take a look at Robert De Niro in the 'Joker' or Al Pacino in 'Once upon a time in Hollywood' they're so much more free and agile, which all in all makes the whole thing look better and they were released in the same year!

A gifted man but unfortunately he got involved in politics. Now it seems he confused his gangster role with real life. When I look back on his career I realize that he did quite a lot of mediocre bow wow movies too.

This movie ties "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" as the worst movie from 2 of the best directors of all time. Both were absolutely insufferable though "The Irishman" was worse due to having aged actors try to play young men. The so-called "beat down" of the store owner in "The Irishman" was absolutely cringe worthy to watch. How did Scorsese let that past editing?

Thats ridiculous. Look at the scene where Santino beats up Carlo in the Godfather. One of the punches thrown clearly doesnt even touch Carlo. Still, the Godfather is the greatest. One scene doesnt make or break a movie.

I know, I dont how Scorsese let that get into the movie either. I agree with you on once upon a time in America, that right at the very bottom of my list for Tarantino's movies. But as bad as the fight scene was in Irishman it didn't really take me out of it for too long

Look he is master at his skill so to say. But he skid marked his most respectable career you can’t take a damn thing from him in his craft. He hammers Trump so hard at makes it a open fact he hates our 45. I wish he just leave it alone. Great actor. I hate he had to speak out against Trump. Trump is a President and he being the elite he is should make a better example. But we don’t live in a perfect world.
