* 2024 UPDATE* This is a prototype chair from 2020 which won the Toyota Mobility Unlimited Challenge. Adjustable COG is a feature we are still developing. This feature is not available on the Phoenix i Hybrid which will be released in 2024. The Phoenix i Hybrid features our integral front wheel power assist. Check it out here: www.phoenixinstinct.com/phoen...
ORIGINAL TEXT:
The Phoenix i is the first ever wheelchair to Intelligently configure itself on the move. The i adjusts its COG (centre of gravity) to stay in sync with the user’s COG. At all times the i maintains minimum weight through the front wheels reducing drag for vastly easier pushing and turning. Leaning forward or sitting back the chair will respond with the user so it won’t over balance and tip.
If you hang a heavy bag off the back of the Phoenix i the chair will know and will adjust the centre of gravity so the chair doesn’t become tippy.
The result of intelligent centre of gravity is a chair that feels completely in sync with the user pushing it.
As finalists in the Toyota Mobility Foundation #MobilityUnlimited Challenge we are striving to see SMART wheelchairs become the norm. We believe SMART technology is going to revolutionise the wheelchair in the same way it has done for the phone.
Find out if the judges of the Mobility Unlimited Challenge share our vision and award Phoenix Instinct funding to put the first smart wheelchair into production.
You can see Toyota announce the winners on Dec 17 by signing up here:

An update on the progress of the Phoenix i: The much anticipated Phoenix i will soon be here featuring our unique, AWD (All Wheel Drive) technology. "Game changing" is a much over used term that often isn’t the case. What we have created is genuinely life changing technology. The Phoenix i lightweight Hybrid incorporates full time power assist bringing a whole new level of control, braking and ease of pushing in a chair that’s lightweight, compact and easy to transfer. The new Phoenix i system will soon be available as a retro fit for Phoenix Pure wheelchairs and available to buy already fitted and sold as a Phoenix i Hybrid. The Phoenix i begins an evolution of the manual wheelchair towards smart technology. Its first feature will be the integral power assist. The adjustable COG is currently still in development. We will post more information over the coming weeks. We are in Melbourne for the Oceania Seating Symposium next week where we will demonstrate the features of the Phoenix i for the first time! Check out the Phoenix i in action here: ukposts.infokqjZKFHnk0g?feature=share

Very nice design, the only thing I would suggest is wider front casters because the narrow wheels get caught in craves caught in holes. The design the front leg part to come out farther for stability, or maybe that's why the wheels move and adjust. I've been in a wheelchair over 40 year's or more so have some experience in riding wheelchairs mostly julopies chairs but I made them work. Never own an expensive wheelchair.

"i'm not sure rolling back and forth with the movement on public transport's a great idea, especially if you have people sharing the seating or standing room only with your wheelchair. I once had 3 people and a pushchair in the same space as my now retired guide dog, who did tuck himself away underneath the double seat where me and my ex were sitting on a very long busride, but the lady with the pushchair was worried she'd roll over the dog's paws when she got off at her stop. Fortunately, the dog could stand up and move sufficiently to let the pushchair off.

Wheelchair Repair & Distribution: Wheelchair repair and maintenance project is running smoothly under the supervision of Mr. Tek Bahadur Budhathoki inside the CDCA premises. Our main goal is to collect the old wheelchair and repair them and make them reusable. We collect the old wheelchair from different organizations like CP Nepal, Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Center, and BIA & from individuals as well. The main problem while repairing the wheelchair is that we couldn't find easily find the spare parts which is the main challenge. With Mr. Tek Bdr Budhathoki and Ramchandra, they had repaired 13 wheelchairs & this wheelchair is from CP Nepal & Shanti Sewa Griha and from an individual as well. Just few weeks ago we got old wheelchairs from Jawalakhel Wheelchair Sports Club (JWSC) for repairing but all this wheelchairs are sports wheelchairs. So, it's difficult to repair them because we couldn't find the spare parts of this wheelchair.

I don't know if this is possible (I know it can be done with brakes). Though I have been thinking if it is possible to make the push/handrims in a way that would allow the wheelchair to go forward when the user pushes to 'go backwards' and vice versa. And if that could be made easily changeable then I think it would be a holy grail.

A useful feature would be to have it compensate for surfaces with camber to one side, perhaps by locking/freezing one or both castor swivels, so the chair tracks in a straight line instead of veering to the downhill side. It seems to me you have much of the needed tech in the chair already, so it wouldn't take much.

Congratulations on pushing the envelope of wheelchair design. Reading through the comments it is obvious that it is impossible to design the perfect solution for every single wheelchair user, but I see great potential in combining technology and modern wheelchair design. As a physician with over 30 years in a wheelchair, I have been frustrated by the slow pace of improvement in wheelchair design. Far more effort goes in to bike and car design. So kudos to you for trying! Hopefully, there will be options to fit the needs of as many users as possible. E.g. user selected hand brakes (push to lock), power assist for assist up AND down slopes including diagonal slopes, removable battery that can be charged separately over night or as a spare, ability to turn off/on power assist or COG with single button, etc. Perhaps those that don't desire COG and/or power assist can chose those features as options? I can see how COG optimization would help navigating the cobblestone roads of Europe!

@@PhoenixInstinctLtd I can't wait to see what you come up with. The world of bicycles and electric cars have seen such amazing innovations with lightweight materials and batteries, regenerative braking, etc. So much room for improvement in wheelchair design. For those commenters who don't see a need or potential for these innovations, they probably aren't your "early adopter" market, but may see the benefits down the line as the technology becomes more mainstream and affordable. I know the younger patients at our hospital look forward to tech advances in disability devices.
@brin57

@@johnhauschildt4460 It's not about not being early adopters, it's about knowing what is not necessarily a good idea, based on decades of experience actively navigating pretty much every environment. As an active user it is imperitive that you and the chair act as one, and a constantly shifting centre of gravity goes against that concept. Top marks for the innovation, but in reality it's addressing a problem that is not a problem for a great many wheelchair users.

Noticed something completely unrelated to the chair in this, the ramp on the train. I've just come back from a few days in Blackpool (first day was last Tuesday, hottest day we've ever had, great timing) and used the trams and buses a lot, getting on and off was a breeze due to either not needing a ramp (trams) or the ramp being automatically controlled by the driver from his driver's seat (bus) no need for a manual ramp being set up. Isn't it about time trains had this?

Have to say, after 28 years in a chair I really do not see the point. The extra weight outweighs the tiny benefit by a long way. I get its a carbon fibre chair but I'd take those weight savings as is. Add to that the risk of failure leaving the wheels out of alinement even once in 20 years would again outweigh any benefit. Personally, If that was offered it as a free upgrade option on my next chair I would decline. Just my personal view as an active chair user most of my adult life. The added stability may appeal more to newer chair users while they are still have a fear of tipping but is using anti tip wheels for 6 months not a better option?
@PhoenixInstinctLtd
@PhoenixInstinctLtd 3 роки тому
As a wheelchair user you will appreciate the impact the centre of gravity has on the chair. If you have your CG set to the front you can have a very agile chair but it will be tippy. If you have it set to the back you will have a very stable chair but it will feel heavy. If you have it set to the middle you don't get either great agility or great stability. This smart system gives the chair agility and ease of pushing beyond what would be safe on a conventional wheelchair while also being stable. What is more important than a smart CG system is advancing wheelchairs beyond the mechanical. Nobody could have imagined how the phone would evolve once it became smart. By embracing smart technology now we can evolve new functions never before possible. Smart CG is just one feature we are working on.
@brin57
@brin57 Рік тому
I'm with Stuart on this. 44 years in a chair, and I see this as addressing a problem that isn't really a problem. Yes my chair is very forward CG, agile, and tippy. And thats how I like it all the time. Last thing I want is it changing on me constantly. Also not a fan of the asthetic design. I prefer my chair to attract as little attention as possible, as do most of the chair users I know. We're generally not a fan of out-there designs, and the non-survival of pretty much every asthetically radical designed chair, bares testament to that.
@MVJB
@MVJB Рік тому
I have been a para for 43 years and I agree with the comment. Simple and light are the way to go if your a para. Might be useful for a low quad. Just get used to falling out and getting back in. How would you wheel stand over a bump when the CG has moved back automatically?
@brin57
@brin57 Рік тому
@@MVJB Exactly! The light front end allows for small front wheels to be just skimming the surface most of the time, and that has to be consistently predictable as conditions constantly change, and need to be responded to immediately with predictable result. It only takes a relatively small stone to upset you if the front is heavy. I can understand how some could see merits in this, but I can't see how those people would be active users.

Hi George, our chair is going to be priced similar to other leading brands such as RGK and Panthera. This is more than just about this chair. We hope to see SMART tech available in all wheelchairs. Our mission is to see the wheelchair evolve with current and future technologies.

@@PhoenixInstinctLtd I see no relationship between you and rpg and Panthers. In most cases, those that have insurance, they will pay for basic wheelchairs. I had decent insurance so I got a quickie gpv chair. It was set up properly and I have never felt I needed more. Most of what I call fancy chairs can only be bought by those that have money, lots of it. What most people really need is a good basic chair that fits and works and dont break down easily. I have never once thought I need a chair that constantly changes my center of gravity. Yes, there are all sorts of fancy chairs out there doing all sorts of stuff but again , totally not geared towards most chair users with limited funds. This has always been my knife in the side. In my volunteer work, all i see is the need for decent wheelchairs. By the way, i find attachable power units like you and others have to be extremely useless. The biggest issue is they turn your wheelchair into a big monster. When you get to a small store or whatever, where do you store this thing ? The only power unit i have found to be near perfect is the one sold by spinergy. Its tucked under and does not extend the size of the wheelchair. It is also easily attached and detached. Sadly the cost is just to high like everything else. So my apologies to a point about my views on your wheelchair but center of gravity is just normally not in the discussion except for initial setup. Thanks for listening and i hope you success. george

@@PhoenixInstinctLtd another thing if I may, what made you decide that this was a primary need ? Did everyone you asked in public say, yes, I need a chair that self adjusts center of gravity ? Did you not hear anything else ? george

@@georgecurtis6463 Thanks for your feedback. This chair is currently still in development - the chair featured is a prototype. The final chair will have more features than the intelligent COG with the capability to add more as technology progresses. We haven't released all the information just yet. We have only just won the funding to bring this chair to market as the winner of the Toyota Mobility Unlimited Challenge so we are now continuing to develop. Keep an eye on our social media for updates.

@@PhoenixInstinctLtd I just noticed something, sort of a lack of armrests. I find my tube armrests necessary and usefull. Might have an option for that. Also noticed that the fender or side wheel protective cover would in my case make it impossible for me to transfer. Might have that removable as required instead of one piece as I see it now. I fully understand it's hard to develop a new item that has been designed to death. So I see you as designing a chair for one kind of user or another. Most likely to design for everyone would put you back from what you are trying to get away from. Also, just as an aside, i hate electronics. 35 years as an auto mechanic and repair shop owner, I have seen the most minor glitch gring a car to an abrupt stop. So your electronics and system for adjusting the wheels will have to be dust, dirt, mud and water proof. Connections and such bullet proof. The circuitry will have to be vibration proof. Solder joints, etc are a land mine waiting to go off. Anyway, wishing you success. george

while is it great step forward, price will always be a factor, fighting the insurance company's and so on, a custom fit chair already can get pricey, practical & cost effective go hand in hand, no more truer than when it comes to disability equipment

It has one massive disadvantage: the gap between a floor and an elevator floor can vary hugely (from narrow gap to wide gap) , so small front wheels are a no-no. Front wheels must be at least 2x greater than your design has otherwise they can jam and you're stuck.

A needed wheelchair is one easier to transfer in and out of ….. I don’t know many who actually use the sliding boards and I understand why but then every transfer is hard on the body when it bumps the tire 😢 then pressure sores . Maybe soon the medical industry will design differently 🙏🏽
